5 out of 5 stars Great for pre trip planning........2007-09-20

I bought this book after picking up an older version for 1 in a bargain bin of a book shop. It is a brilliant book to have when you are in the planning stages of your holiday. It has incredibly detatiled sections on hotels, transportation, dining and ticket options. I liked this book because it was unofficial and gave an honest opinion rather than the 'Disney line'. The criticisms were fair and measured in my opinion and not 'anti-Disney' like some reviewers have said. I really liked the fact that it rated each attraction with ratings for different age groups, this was very helpful for me as it was just me and my husband (late 20's) we were able to avoid the real 'kiddy rides'. Also I found the ratings for our age group to be pretty spot on.

The amount of detail in this book is also a con as well as a pro. I really would not reccommend this book if you already have everything planned and booked. This book is too heavy to bring to the parks, so I would suggest getting a smaller book to synopsis the rides. I found that I read this alot before I went and barely looked at it while we were there.

When you purchase this book, you also get free subscription to the website which has a lot of additional touring plans and also a great 'Best Days' calender which gives every day of the year a mark from 1-10 for crowds (10 being maximum capacity). It also tells you which are the best and worst parks for crowds on any given day based on historical entrance and also special events such as Extra Magic Hours or special parties. I fould this very helpful in avoiding the worst of the summer crowds.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disney Resource.......2007-09-06

I hadn't been to Disney in 2o years and would have wasted a lot of time if I hadn't read this book. We got tickets to eat breakfast with Cinderella thanks to this book. We got to ride Dumbo before the park had been open 10 minutes because of this book. It helped us have the best vacation ever! I won't go back without ordering the newest edition!

5 out of 5 stars Insights and information.......2007-08-28

I went thru this big book before going to Disneyworld and my husband thought I was mental - until we actually got there.. and indeed we managed to have a lovely day at Disneyworld in mid August, we saw all that we wanted, the kids (5 and 8)loved it and we spared SO much time I cannot measure. We knew where and when to go, we skipped attractions that the kids would not have liked and really enjoyed the day (and I mean, it was almost 100°F, no joke). I had another guidebook but the Unofficial guides gives sound advice and insights.
And it was fun reading it, too!!
I would not go without.

4 out of 5 stars Great unoffical guide of WDW.......2007-08-26

Great reference book to Walt Disney World, I am going their in October and this book has given me a lot to think about and has already guided me as to what to do and not to do. I would recomend this book to anyone planning a trip to WDW!

5 out of 5 stars A very thorough book.......2007-08-26

The book was an excellent guideline for my trip to WDW. I highly recommend it.
There are, however, a few things that I would have liked to see. First, the book should rate rides by 'Couple' as well. Several rides were highly-rated by adults (who probably have kids and so enjoy the rides as well), but I did not like the rides at all and thought that they were too childish for me. So a rating for couples or adults without kids would have been nice. In addition, the ratings for various hotels is not really correct. I stayed at the Dolphin and the hotel did not match the ratings in this book. Which is fine I guess because with rooms it can be a hit or a miss especially with such large hotels.
Other than that, the book is excellent. The touring plans are also dot on - when I followed them, I was done with everything major by noon.

Book Description

During and following WWII, a special multinational group of more than 350 men and women served behind enemy lines and joined frontline military units to ensure the preservation, protection, liberation and restitution of the world's greatest artistic and cultural treasures. This "band of unsung heroes," formally referred to as the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFAA) section, or commonly referred to as the "Monuments Men," worked tirelessly to track down, identify and catalogue millions of priceless works of art and irreplaceable cultural artifacts, including masterpieces by Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Vermeer, that had been stolen by Hitler and the Nazis.

The story of the Monuments Men, including their heroics and exploits in rescuing and safeguarding many of the world's greatest artworks for the benefit of mankind, has never before been fully revealed until now, with the publication of Rescuing Da Vinci, an exhaustively researched historical account written by Robert M. Edsel. Mr. Edsel can best be described as a successful athlete and business entrepreneur turned modern day "Indiana Jones." Mr. Edsel has dedicated the last five years of his life to painstaking and far-reaching research to unravel the secrets of the Monuments Men and, in so doing, to make the world aware of their unprecedented contributions, both during and after WWII, and to ensure that these unsung heroes receive appropriate recognition from the United States government, as well as the broad public.

The detailed documentation, inventories and photographs developed and catalogued by the Monuments Men during and following World War II, have made possible, and continue to make possible, the restitution of stolen artworks of to rightful owners and their descendents. Long after WWII, many Monuments Men went on to become renowned directors and curators of preeminent international cultural institutions, including the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Toledo Museum of Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, among many others, as well as professors at esteemed universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, New York University, Williams College and Columbia University. Others became founders, presidents, and members of associations such as the New York City Ballet, the American Museum Association, the American Association of Museum Directors, the Archaeological Institute of America, the Society of Architectural Historians, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as respected architects, archivists, artists and musicians.

"Mr. Edsel's book is captivating in several respects, from the graphic, garish reminders of the faces of the great plunderers, to the singular beauty of the art they sought to steal. And it is a high and overdue memorial to the "Monuments Men," who did the herculean job of tracking down and repatriating the great art." -- William F. Buckley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2007-10-09

This book shows and tells another side of war. It is the story told in picture of Hitler and his Nazi thugs pillaging Europe and stealing priceless art objects, painting, statures, books, even ancient scrolls then hiding them in caves and bunkers in Germany. What I loved about this book were the photos of US Army units rescuing those stolen art treasures then returned them to the towns, churches and cities. The author has done an exemplary job of finding photos and stories which has made this an important work. Photos I've never seen and story I have never heard about. I think this book needs to be in every high school library in the country. Students need to be shown how our American Army worked to recover all this lost art. His book made me proud to have serviced in the US army.

Thank you for writing this book

5 out of 5 stars SPOILS OF WAR.......2007-09-21

This is one of the most fascinating books i have ever read. The period images are amazing, just the photo of italian masons bricking up Michaelangelo's iconic David is worth the purchase. After reading this book I was stunned that so few art treasures were destroyed. I had no idea that much of the treasures at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. was stored at Biltmore because of its remote setting. I was also blown away to see the images of workman removing winged victory from the Louvre, I just had no idea all of this went on leading up to the war and during the war. The German pillaging of the great European art treasures is disgusting of course, especially the art they looted from the weathy Jewry like the Rothchilds and others, some of which even to this day are trying to get back art work that is rightly theirs. I highly recommend this great book to anyone interested in art, history, art history, or frankly has an inquisive mind. I want to thank the authors for a job well done.

5 out of 5 stars What were they thinking!!.......2007-08-10

This was a fascinating and disturbing account of the massive Nazi looting and subsequent recovery by the Allies. It is a story told mostly by pictures to the tune of about 20 pages of pictures for each page of print. It is promoted by the publisher as the biggest non-told story of WWII and he might be right; it diminished the German war effort and probably shortened the War. It was also about the massive and admirable effort by the so-called Allied `Monuments Men' to recover and redistribute the loot back to their rightful owners after the War.

Germany stole millions of art objects from occupied countries, and even from its own ally Italy, on the pretext of saving it from the `barbarian' invaders from the West. Monuments weighing tons, like the `Burghers of Calais' from France and the `Winged Lion' from atop the column in Florence's San Martin Square, were somehow lifted and hauled away. Also, 5000 church bells were stolen from Europe and 300 trolley cars were removed from Amsterdam. In short, they looted everything they could get their hands on, and they were good at it. There are good pictures of the bells and the trolley cars.

In Slavic countries such as Russia and Poland, the plundering was accompanied by an attempted systematic destruction of the culture itself; `inferior races' in Hitler's mind didn't deserve a history. The siege of Russia was particularly bad; 6000 hospitals were destroyed, and 86,000 elementary and secondary schools were destroyed. Decency had taken a long vacation in Germany.

Hitler was a master at destroying things. He destroyed a lot of Europe and Russia, and even extended his `scorched earth' policy to his own country when Germany was near defeat. Thankfully, that order was not faithfully carried out.

How could a country justify destroying the culture of another country? What were the people of Germany thinking when they elected this maniac as Chancellor in the 1930's? Why did they blindly follow him?

What were they thinking!!

5 out of 5 stars I recommend this book.......2007-05-13

If you enjoy WWII history and art, this is a book that should be in your collection. It is full of wonderful photos that you will not find elsewhere. If you have ever wondered about what happened to the great masterpieces of art during WWII, this is the book to buy. Amazon also has a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-04-14

2 out of 5 stars Tired of Gabe.......2007-10-04

I think I have read the last Benni Harper book I ever will. I got so tired of listening to Gabe moan, groan, and generally be a pain in the neck to everyone around him. The mystery plot was too thin and not really a mystery at all. Actually the series might be a whole lot better if Gabe were to disappear. He adds nothing to a book or to Benni's life other than a thorn in her side and mine..

5 out of 5 stars Tumbling Blocks.......2007-08-28

This captivating series is just so fun to read. I look forward to each book as they come out. I hope they never end.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as others in this series........2007-08-20

Benni doesn't need children, she has a husband who won't grow up. He acts like a bratty teenager way too often. Things seem to reconcile a little bit at the end between Gabe and his mother, but we'll have to see in the next book if he can really grow up and start treating Benni like a wife, rather than a doormat.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series.......2007-08-08

I have to say this book disappointed me. We're used to Gabe being an adolescent jerk, but he has grown to have so many rotten characteristics, you have to wonder why a supposedly smart woman like Benni even sticks with him. He's supposed to be some brooding mystery man always on the verge of an emotional breakthrough, but basically he's just a verbally abusive guy who is always dismissive of anything Benni does. And in return, Benni fawns all over him, still mesmerized by how sexy he is. Puh-leeze. In the real world, no smart woman would think his constant nastiness would be remotely sexy. The plot was okay but pretty easy to figure out, and I missed reading more about Dove and Emory. Elvia just came off as a shallow nitwit, which was also disappointing.

2 out of 5 stars Not the greatest.......2007-07-06

What a disappointment! Not only did she not develop any characters in this book, she nearly left out most of the old ones, namely Dove, Isaac, Sam, Elvia, Emory, and even Gabe. These characters all played their steriotypical roles in the backround, never really getting involved with Benni in any meaningful way. Dove and Isaac were wise as usual but hardly around to give any advice or any comfort, Sam was funny and cute and nowhere to be seen unless babysitting the dog, Elvia is apparently now a neurotic pregnant clothes-horse (Please. That's just not in jive with her character), Emory is hardly around except now he's afraid of his neurotic pregnant clothes-horse wife, and Gabe is angry. All these characters put in their cameo appearances, and disappeared right after. Was there really anyone else in the book who could be called a main character besides Benni? Oh wait, yes there was. The puppy, Boo. Give me a break.
Ms. Fowler backed down from any and all emotional moments that could have developed in this book just by having Benni not want to get involved because Dove would tell her not too. I agree with another reviewer who called Benni a doormat. This is getting ridiculous.
On the whole, the "mystery" was way too easy to figure out, and the ending of the book was forced and formulaic. Could Benni fall down and get hurt any more times? Could there be a major "emotional" breakthrough at the very end AGAIN? All in all, the book was pretty bad. I think this is the end for me with this series.

Book Description

From 828, when Venetian merchants carried home from Alexandria the stolen relics of St. Mark, to the fall of the Venetian Republic to Napoleon in 1797, the visual arts in Venice were dramatically influenced by Islamic art. Because of its strategic location on the Mediterranean, Venice had long imported objects from the Near East through channels of trade, and it flourished during this particular period as a commercial, political, and diplomatic hub. This monumental book examines Venice's rise as the "bazaar of Europe" and how and why the city absorbed artistic and cultural ideas that originated in the Islamic world.

Venice and the Islamic World, 828–1797 features a wide range of fascinating images and objects, including paintings and drawings by familiar Venetian artists such as Bellini, Carpaccio, and Tiepolo; beautiful Persian and Ottoman miniatures; and inlaid metalwork, ceramics, lacquer ware, gilded and enameled glass, textiles, and carpets made in the Serene Republic and the Mamluk, Ottoman, and Safavid Empires. Together these exquisite objects illuminate the ways Islamic art inspired Venetian artists, while also highlighting Venice's own views toward its neighboring region. Fascinating essays by distinguished scholars and conservators offer new historical and technical insights into this unique artistic relationship between East and West.

3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2007-10-06

What a dissapointment of a book when the subject has such visual and aesthetic potential. My gripe is mainly with the imagery - paintings are almost invariably reproduced in a size between postage stamp and post-card, when what one would like are full-page reproductions, with details to illustrate the costume and artifacts of the islamic world which began to turn up in Venesian art in this period. Buy it if you want an informative text, but definately not if you want a visual feast.

5 out of 5 stars The Silk Road Adorned.......2007-05-13

For centuries The Most Serene Republic of Venice was the the western terminus of the fabled Silk Road. The city's warehouses were the repository of every luxury that Persia, India, China, Siam, the Levant, Byzantium, and the Ottomans had to offer. This book is a wonderful companion to the Met's glittering exhibition of art, illuminated manuscripts and decorative objects, which give a sense of Venice's singular place in the history of the Mediterranean. Viva San Marco!

5 out of 5 stars Venice and Islam.......2007-05-13

This book is excelent. This book is the catalog of the exhibiton that
is on tne Metropolitan Museum of New York.

5 out of 5 stars A scholarly catalogue.......2007-04-19

This book is the catalogue for a traveling exhibition held at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in 2006 and at the Met in New York in 2007. It is a very complete study of the influence of the islamic world on the Republic of Venice, encompassing all forms of art, painting, architecture, ceramics, textiles, engravings, books, and even religious artefacts (mosque lamps for example). All these works of art are the results of intense cultural and economic exchange between both worlds and the catalogue emphasizes this very well. A scholarly publication well served by wonderful illustrations. A very detailed checklist of all the works in the exhibition (medium, dimensions, location) makes this book a definite reference on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The best of all the guide books!.......2007-10-10

The Passporter books are the best of all of the guide books that I've read. I find that their books are very accurate and detailed. I know that they personally go to WDW several times a year and are using first hand knowledge in their books!

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" for first time visitors to Walt Disney World.......2007-09-12

I've been to WDW, but this was still a great book to read. It is organized so that finding what you need is easy. Each ride, attraction, resort, and restaurant is rated and described. This book makes planning your trip easier if you are traveling with small children, teens, or just family with different interests or tastes. It definitely takes some of the guess work out of planning your vacation around the parks. Tip: Buy it before you begin to make reservations or buy tickets! If you're even contemplating traveling to Disney World, buy your PassPorter first.

3 out of 5 stars Good for newbies to Disney, but not enough info for me.......2007-08-28

This guidebook is very well organized and has worksheets for you to jot down important information on reservations. It would be a good introduction for folks who have never gone to Disney World before. However, I found the "Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World" to have much more useful info for me. The Unofficial Guide has neat tips about each park, whereas the Passporter was more centered on simply rating each ride. Like I said, helpful info for new-comers to Disney parks, but if you've already been there at least once there isn't much in this book you don't already know. I was kind of surprised. I had read the Passporter guide for Disney cruises and found it very informative. The Passporter guide to Disney World did have a nice section on reviewing the Disney resorts.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-08-24

This book paid for itself almost immediately by directing me to discounted Disney tickets. It allowed me to compare restaurant menus and prices. It has invaluable tips on rides, hotels, transportation. I could go on all day! Buy this book if you are going to Disney World, especially if it is your first trip there. Amazon's price for this book is the best I could find anywhere.

Book Description

Captures the unique style of fashion maverick Iris Apfel and her exuberantly idiosyncratic personal chic.

With remarkable panache and discernment, Iris Apfel combines styles, colors, textures, and patterns without regard to period, provenance, or aesthetic conventions. Now in her mid-eighties, she is a unique style icon.

Over ninety sumptuous color plates, photographed by Eric Boman, show off a selection of Apfel's extraordinary outfits on wittily posed mannequins, some sporting her trademark outsized spectacles. The originality of her style is typically revealed in her mixing of Dior haute couture with flea-market finds, Dolce & Gabbana lizard trousers with nineteenth-century ecclesiastical vestments, pink Lanvin worn with ropes of Navajo turquoise. Apfel's eclectic pieces might come from a Parisian couture house, an American thrift shop, or a North African souk, or they may have been made to her own design in a tiny studio.

Detailed captions describe every aspect of the outfits, including names and dates of designers, plus full information on fabrics and accessories. A selection of audacious accessories also comes under the spotlight: a giant necklace made of bear claws, a turn-of-the-century Indian horse ornament worn as a necklace, a parrot's-head brooch in colored glass and rhinestones.

The book includes an introduction by Harold Koda, director of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and an essay by Apfel herself, describing her lifelong love affair with style and illustrated with vintage photographs from her personal collection. 169 illustrations, 149 in color.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful inspiration.......2007-06-11

This book reminds all its readers that true style grows from individuality. In a time were you would recognize a stylist's style easier than the style of a designer, Iris Apfel's approach to and interpretation of fashion is the light at the end of the tunnel, she certainly has nudged me into the one or the other "true to myself experiment". Iris Apfel's witty introduction perfectly accessoirizes the clothes and jewellery presented, not only poviding background information on how this exhibition came to life but also shedding light on a certainly most interesting and colorful life in a warmhearted and humorous way. This book most certainly will be a longterm occupant of my coffee table.

5 out of 5 stars Need more like her!.......2007-05-22

Loved, loved this book. The comments, the photography and most importantly the crediting of designers to each style was extremely well done. This rare bird of fashion serves us notice that we should embrace our individual style and glory in it and not follow the herd or be shy about manifesting our true "feathers".

5 out of 5 stars Iris Apfel, what a rare bird indeed..........2007-04-02

I was lucky enough to view the exhibit 'Iris Apfel - Rare Bird of Fashion' at the Norton Museum in Palm Beach, and what a visual treat it was... Not only is she an icon of fashion, but her style, her combinations of colors and her very different approach to the matter is something everybody should see and study. I have seen and met her in New York, she is the most terrific person!!! The book is amazing as well, great photography!!! I will always treasure this book and every time I open it, there is something else to marvel at or read about... An absolutely great source of inspiration, that simply makes you smile! One could only wish there will be other 'rare birds' to follow her lead.

After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie. They're standing on the toilets, still, hiding until the museum closes and their adventure begins. Such is the impact of timeless novels . . . they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale of how Claudia and her brother run away to the museum in order to teach their parents a lesson. Little do they know that mystery awaits!

Book Description

Claudia knew that she could never pull off the old-fashioned kind of running away...so she decided not to run FROM somewhere, but TO somewhere. And so, after some careful planning, she and her younger brother, Jamie, escaped -- right into a mystery that made headlines!

5 out of 5 stars I Want to Go There!.......2007-09-15

I want to go to New York to see this museum. This book was incredible and I loved the style of writing and the way the story unfolded letting each character have their own voice. I loved the notes at the end from the author. I really could tell she loved these characters and did care about their ever after. Every child should read this book. Wait, every adult should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Children's Classic.......2007-07-08

I bought this book for a class that I was student teaching for, and to my dismay none of them heard of it. Thanks to standardized testing books like these collect dust. My class loved it, and I highly recommened having it on the bookshelf for future generations

5 out of 5 stars midnight museum magic.......2007-06-13

Do you like adventure, mystery and fun? Well then this is the book for you. It is about a girl named Claudia (11), and her brother, Jamie(9); they decided to run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They worked together which helped them to survive many days and nights in the museum. I learned that you should work together no matter who it is you are working with; your brother, your sister, a friend, or even Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler! I'd love to tell you more, but I can't spoil the story befroe you read "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler."

E.L Konigsburg

Twelve year old Claudia Kincaid, is bored with her life - being an "A" student all the time, not having a big allowance, and having to deal with being the only girl and oldest of all her brothers. So, she decides to change things a bit to make them exciting. She takes all her allowance, her brother's allowance, her brother (Jamie) and a trumpet and violin case and heads off on an enjoyable, fun adventure to the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York City. There, they take tours everyday, sleep in queens' beds and do whatever they please while being careful not to get caught. One day, they uncover a beautiful, exquisite statue of an angel. As they get to know more about this angel, they find out that it is a mystery. No one knows who actually created this angel. Claudia is determined to find out who the artist is. But will she ever figure it out without getting caught?

This book was full of adventure, and filled determination and concentration. I really enjoyed this book because I felt like I was in the story with the characters through their good and bad times. Konigsburg makes this story become so realistic, it comes to life.

I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good adventure. The plot and setting of Konigsburg's book makes it an incredible, thrilling quest that I am sure you will enjoy! I know I enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs Basil E.Frankweiler.......2007-04-17

E.L. Konigsburg wrote, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a Newberry children or teens book. The book is about two children running away from their house and staying at the Metropolitan Museums of Art. The obstacles they go through to live independently include regrets from going anyway. It reminds you how much you care about your parents. While at the museum the kids find a mysterious puzzle that has clues that to an unexpected conclusion. There are no weaknesses in this book. I read this book because my Aunt is the author. I am not saying this book is good because I am related to the Author but because it is a fantastic and interesting novel. I totally recommend this book to anyone. There is also other books of hers that have won Newberry medals. A movie has been made to go with the book if you are more of a movie kind of guy.

Fantastic book; saved money by purchasing it through Amazon. Shows all the exibits. Very pleased with the book. A fine edition to anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-09-09

I bought the book before seeing the tour in Philly. The book is very well done, and very good representation of the tour. Beautiful photographs, plus good rich text around the history of the 18th dynasty.

Other reviews talk about the tour, which isn't really what the book is about. The tour was rather crowded, and I was somewhat disappointed that all the objects were small, and no Tut sarcophagus. Very little explanation of the layout, so my son was complaining about the lack of Tut objects; they included many from the 18th dynasty.

I recommend the official DVD, its great; bought it at the show.

Beautiful book, great pictures. Great to have with you if you get to see exhibit.

5 out of 5 stars Gollden Age of the Pharaohs.......2007-07-16

Purchased in anticipation of the opening of the exhibition in London in November, the book is a mine of information. Not only does Zahi Hawass describe the objects on display, but he places them in context and gives a vivid picture of life in Egypt at the time of Tutankhamun and before his accession to the throne. Not only a great read, a reference for future use and up to Dr Hawass usual enthusiastic and vivid style. A must-have book for anyone interested in Egypt.

5 out of 5 stars absolutly stunning....a once in a life time chance...........2007-07-04

First and formost DO NOT miss the King Tut tour.....the artifatcs are absoutely astounding and incredibly beautiful beyond words..It it truly extremely hard to wrap your mind around that every peice is wll over 3000 yers old. As for the book itself it is nithing short of amazing...caputring the exibit almost in its entirety....but NOTHING compares to seeing the absoultly stunnig tour live...a truly once in a life time experience...after the US tour concludes it it will never leave Cairo again...The book is worth its weight in gold...the awsome photography and articles by renowned archiloghits and her HRH the Queen of Egypt her self...THis tour the book by National Geographic and the Official DVD are some of the greatest gifts ever bestowed opon the world. A gift from the heart of Egypt to the world that will never be go on tour again...A humbling experience live and most interesting reading a msater work indeed...Bravo!!!

The American Casino Guide is well worth the money to use in Las Vegas. There are a few other out of state casino coupons but this is mainly for Las Vegas. Great buy one get one free buffet, shows and hotel offers. The only problem with this book is the binding. It's coming unglued in the middle, not a big deal though. A lot of info for new table gamers. Highly recommend this book!

This is the third year I have bought this book for the Las Vegas coupons. This year, we are bringing our 19-year-old son to a convention, and I noticed that even the buffet coupons require that each user be 21! I was disappointed, as I bought an extra book. Hope they don't enforce it. That being said, it is a valuable guide and pays for itself many times over.

2 out of 5 stars Ms. Hagerman.......2007-05-12

I wasn't pleased with this years guide. It didn't have nearly the amount 0f buffet coupons that last years guide had. We were looking for the Sahara,Rio, and the Palms especially since we really had a good time last year out in Vegas with them. We were really disappointed with this years guide.

Loved this book. I dragged this book all over Europe for 31 days. Wow, this book is the bomb. It led me to many jewels in many countries and it helped me find train stations, find my bearings when lost in Switzerland, led me through Vatican when in Italy. I was so impressed. I swear by this book! Its the best.

Great book! I love Rick's books. Use them for every European trip. This one is a wonderful overview to really get the Best of Europe. Especially if it's your first trip. Don't miss Rothenburg and Hallstatt!

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for 2 months of European Travel.......2007-06-22

I traveled in Europe for about 2 months. This book was my main guide book. I also used Eyewitness Europe. This book is excellent because it covers traveling to and from the city, city transportation, the sights in the city (and they are rated so you have an idea of which ones are worth your time,) entrance fees, and any special discount passes that you might benefit from.

The only thing I want to warn you about is the cities the book covers. He covers the major cities in each country, but make sure that the book covers enough of the cities you are going to visit before buying it. Ex: Doesn't cover Munich, Innsbruck, Hanover, anything outside of Prague in Czech Republic. These are just a few examples. For us it was perfect because it was our first trip to Europe and we wanted to see the main sights and cities.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide I have reviewed ever.......2007-05-08

I have been planning a family trip to Europe for a long time, after reviewing this guide, I adjusted all my travel schedule as well as Hotel reservations. It is very well organized and has great tips.

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed. Highly informative. Offers opinions rare in other publications.......2007-04-10

Steves take the time to not only provide details of destinations, but also gives the reader rankings of Countries and Cities to visit first plus he ranks the sites within the country. EXACTLY what a first time visitor needs. I will combine his recommendations with those of friends and family. Of course, I will be sure to read at least two other sources before developing a game plan for our first trip to Europe. I grow tired of fru-fru books that say everything is great and every city is great. Steves sticks his neck out with opinions and details to back up those opinions. I have every reason to believe that all of the more specific guides will be similar. I HAVE ALREADY SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGED MY OPINIONS OF WHERE WE WILL GO ON THE FIRST TRIP. Is it exactly as he recommends? NO. Not at all. We prefer the out of the way smaller uncongested cities vs Paris, Rome and London. Not for us, thanks. BUT, we have already developed an initial list to investigate based on his info of those smaller "second tier" locations that suit OUR interests. After all, it is OUR trip. But with this guide, we have saved dozens of hours of research. Highly recommend for anyone. Beat Michelin big-time
