Book Description
The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River, victims of Indians who claimed the vast virgin territory and strove to turn back the growing tide of whites. These frontiersmen are the subjects of Allan Eckert's dramatic history.
Against the background of such names as George Rogers Clark, Daniel Boone, Arthur St. Clair, Anthony Wayne, Simon Girty and William Henry Harrison, Eckert has recreated the life of one of America's most outstanding heroes, Simon Kenton. Kenton's role in opening the Northwest Territory to settlement more than rivaled that of his friend Daniel Boone. By his eighteenth birthday, Kenton had already won frontier renown as woodsman, fighter and scout. His incredible physical strength and endurance, his great dignity and innate kindness made him the ideal prototype of the frontier hero.
Yet there is another story to The Frontiersmen. It is equally the story of one of history's greatest leaders, whose misfortune was to be born to a doomed cause and a dying race. Tecumseh, the brilliant Shawnee chief, welded together by the sheer force of his intellect and charisma an incredible Indian confederacy that came desperately close to breaking the thrust of the white man's westward expansion. Like Kenton, Tecumseh was the paragon of his people's virtues, and the story of his life, in Allan Eckert's hands, reveals most profoundly the grandeur and the tragedy of the American Indian.
No less importantly, The Frontiersmen is the story of wilderness America itself, its penetration and settlement, and it is Eckert's particular grace to be able to evoke life and meaning from the raw facts of this story. In The Frontiersmen not only do we care about our long-forgotten fathers, we live again with them.
Researched for seven years, The Frontiersmen is the first in Mr. Eckert's "The Winning of America" series.

Writing at its best.......2007-10-08
If you like compelling writing that generates a lightning bolt narrative about manifest destiny and those who were major players in this exciting but heart breaking game, this book is for you. I also recommend another thunder storm of a book: Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears by Cherokee author Jerry Ellis. He was the first person in the modern world to WALK the 900 mile route of the Trail of Tears and the book was nominated for a Pulitzer and National Book Award.
Couldn't Put It Down.......2007-08-27
This was a great read. Once I started I couldn't put it down. I plan on reading the other 5 books by Allan Eckert. It takes you back to pure human nature and puts you in touch with yourself. You have to ask how you would respond to the situations encountered by these brave frontiersmen. I'm telling most of my friends about this book.
The Frontiersmen.......2007-08-15
A very powerful and informative historical narrative of some of the personalities that shaped the settlement of this country ;from the perspective of Simon Kenton. A "must read" !
What a book!.......2007-07-28
I can't decide which I like better, this book or Eckert's 'Dark and Bloody River', but they are both MUST READ's for any history fan. For even a casual reader this book will hold your attention, and provide you with a facinating insight into our nation's history.
My All Time Favorite Historical Narrative !!!!.......2007-06-05
This is a fantastic book if you love Early American Historical Narratives which I love. I first read this book about twenty years ago, and recently read it again. The author's foot notes and reference material allow you to really dive into the time period of the book!

The Complete Valley of the Kings: Tombs and Treasures of Egypt's Greatest Pharaohs (Complete)
ASIN: 0500513228 |
Book Description
A lavishly illustrated survey of the remarkable wall paintings in Egypt's Valley of the Kings, all specially photographed and accompanied by a detailed analysis of ancient Egyptian society and beliefs.
The Valley of the Kings is famous throughout the world as the burial place of the great New Kingdom pharaohs. It was here, in 1922, that Howard Carter stumbled upon the virtually intact tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamun. And here, in recent months, that archaeologists discovered a new tomb with its wooden sarcophagi, painted funeral masks, and alabaster jars.
The royal tombs, tunneled into the Theban cliffs, represented both gates to the Netherworld and the womb of the Great Goddess. Many of them contain wall paintings of the king with various gods and goddesses, as well as papyri, mummies, decorated coffins, and other artifacts.
This is the first book to reproduce the wall paintings and murals in full. It explores in great detail the most deeply-held beliefs of the ancient kings and queens who are buried here, beliefs that provided the impetus for the building, decoration, and equipping of these magnificent tombs. Beautifully illustrated in full color, with thirty foldouts, it allows the reader to join the pharaohs of the New Kingdom on their journeys to immortality. 300+ color illustrations, including 30 foldouts.
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2007-10-03
As a lover of all things Egyptian and a trained Egyptologist I had high expectations for this book.... and it delivered in every way. The fold-out pages give a fantastic view of the insides of the tombs that the average tourist isn't permitted to take photos of. And instead of viewing a small section at a time you have entire vistas laid out for you. The high quality photography shows the smallest details so clearly that you can see the individual bushstrokes and even places where the painter accidentally dripped some paint and forgot to clean it up. Every time I turned a page memories of my time in Egypt came flooding back.
If I have to make one complaint it would be that there are not enough images of the tomb of Nefertari, and perhaps also the tomb of Seti I. The images that there are are quite selective and do not give an overall impression of their beauty. Admittedly, the focus is on the Valley of The Kings, but Nefertari was a queen and henceforth royal, too.
All in all, this is a MUST have book for anyone who loves Egypt.
Excellent book.......2007-09-10
This is an excellent book. There are dozens, if not hundreds of books filled with pictures of Egyptian art these days -- but this back far surpasses all the others I've seen.
Don't judge this book by the cover on the Amazon page. The cover is rather bland, colorwise, in contrast to the spectacular color illustrations.
The description says there are 30 foldouts -- but it doesn't say that these are huge foldouts--several pages long.
The thoughts that ran through my mind as I looked at the book were, "this is a cultural achievement -- the greatest tribute to the Royal Tombs of Egypt yet paid in modern history" and "surely this is a labor of love by Zahi Hawass, Director of Egyptian Antiquities."
For $65 (the original US price), this book is a bargain -- and even more so with the discounted price (as of this writing) of only $41.
An outstanding book.......2007-05-14
Another exceptionally fine book from the publishing house of Thames and Hudson. Exquisitely photographed by Sandro Vannini and sterling text by Zahi Hawass, the highly respected expert in the field of ancient Egypt. For those who will never have the opportunity of visiting Egypt, this "virtual" tour of its royal tombs is an essential addition to any library of those interested in this extraordinay civilization.

Royal Tombs is a Trip in Time........2007-04-12
Nothing short of exceptional!!! I had heard that the book was a bit tricky to read - what with many foldout pages - but I didn't find that to be the case at all. This might be the situation for someone who is leafing through the book quickly - but this a book that needs to be savored. The photography is fantastic - you get a REALY good idea of what the insides of the Royal Tombs look like. I have no complaints, gripes, nit picks, etc. - This is a book to own and re-read and puruse for years to come.

Book Description
A rich, colorful history of California centering on the untold story of America 's biggest farmer, J.G. Boswell, who controls more than $1 billion worth of water rights and real estate in the heart of the state.
J.G. Boswell is the biggest farmer in America. Over the past fifty years he has built a secret empire while thumbing his nose at nature, politicians, labor unions and every journalist who ever tried to lift the veil on the ultimate "factory in the fields." Now eighty years old, with an almost pathological bent toward privacy, Boswell has spent the past few years confiding one of the great stories of the American West to Mark Arax and Rick Wartzman. The King of California is the previously untold account of how a Georgia slave-owning family migrated to California in the early 1920s, drained one of America 's biggest lakes in an act of incredible hubris and carved out the richest cotton empire in the world. Indeed, the sophistication of Boswell 's agricultural operation--from lab to field to gin--is unrivaled anywhere.
Much more than a business story, this is a sweeping social history that details the saga of cotton growers who were chased from the South by the boll weevil and brought their black farmhands to California. It is a gripping read with cameos by a cast of famous characters, from Cecil B. DeMille to Cesar Chavez.
Customer Reviews:
Great friggin book........2007-10-10
I'm not feeling real verbose so just let me say that this book illustrates so much more about US history than the mere subject of cotton suggests. The Boswell story is the American story of our moving further and further away from democratic, egalitarian principles in the pursuit of various notions of efficiency.
Great book. A great non-fiction companion piece would be "Wealth and Democracy" by Kevin Philips.
The king of California.......2006-11-04
This book is way too long and somewhat redundant and boring. The basic story is good, but the author takes too much time and too many pages to tell it.
History, Biography and Expose?.......2006-06-23
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in politics, agriculture, or water rights. It is a well-written and very readable.
It follows four generations of the Boswell family to trace how they assembled the largest industrial farm in the world. Along the way, the authors explore the history of the San Joaquin valley and those who came there to farm it, those who left and those who got left behind. For every group that made a fortune, there were many others who were disappointed. There are plenty of interesting stories of Washington and Sacramento politics, and stories of common people following dreams.
The book examines the effect of large scale farming on farm owners, on those who work the farms now and those who worked them in the past. It provides some good background on the politics of water rights and government involvement in farming, and on the involvement of agriculture in local, state and federal politics.
If you are interested in the politics and history of water in the western states, Cadillac Desert by Marc Reisner is one of the best books I have read on any subject.
Overstuffed but Worth Reading.......2005-11-26
I grew up in Fresno, in the shadow of agribusiness. The story behind "King of California" is a fascinating and important one but I'm not sure this "biography" does it justice. I disliked the awkward mixture of history and journalism. Is this an expose, a biography or history? Its never really clear and the way the book is organized, around the four seasons, is particularly opaque. What does it mean to call a section, "winter?" when it is covering history spanning decades and contains interviews with living people? That said, the material is fascinating. From the role the Boswell's played in taming Tulare Lake, to the development of modern cotton farming, the politics of agriculture and the way big business in general got access and results in subsidies and favorable policy. Early on, Tulare Lake and by extension, the San Joaquin Valley in its pre-U.S. days is described with a vividness I've rarely read elsewhere. However, the description of the Boswell's roots in racism and its legacy in the Central Valley is definitely worth telling but I think it gets too little space here and competes with so many other subjects. Frankly, I'm surprised that this book has gotten the acclaim that it has. While its clearly well researched, the writing is spotty lucid in some places and sensationalized elsewhere. I think the book tries to cover far too many topics; Water politics, cotton farming, racism in California, family history, corporate intrigue, labor issues, flood control and company towns. Had it narrowed it focus to just water, cotton and corporate intrigue, I think it would have been a far more powerful book.
Surfaced and Harpooned.......2005-04-26
This far-reaching book is quite an accomplishment in biography and investigative journalism. Arax and Wartzman cover the history of the immense Boswell farming company of California, and the two guys named J.G. (the founding uncle and the current chairman, his nephew) who built the company into the largest cotton operation on Earth. Through cutthroat competitive instincts and political wheeling-and-dealing, the Boswells amassed tens of thousands of acres in California's Central Valley, and were instrumental in eliminating what was once the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, as the former Tulare Lake was transformed into a festering network of levees, canals, and cesspools dedicated to the mass production of cotton. Thus, the Boswells built the area's environment, culture, and economics for their own profitability.
The book also serves as a great exploration of the business of factory farming, detailing the racism and poverty experienced by Black and Mexican workers, as well as the shifty agricultural and hydrological politics of Big Ag in California - as the Boswells and their competitors/allies buy politicians, stack laws and regulations in their favor, and claim flood control as a reason to alter the natural course of rivers and to completely drain the vast Tulare Lake. Best of all, we see how big business really works out West, with the hypocrisy of so-called rugged outdoorsmen (actually pampered CEO's) who incessantly rail against government interference while also taking in millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies that are meant to help the little guy. This book is immensely informative but does often get tied up in unnecessary details, such as descriptions of petty political shenanigans in the construction of a nearby dam. But the motto of the Boswell clan has been that a whale can't be harpooned if it doesn't come to the surface (a legacy of silence and obfuscation), but Arax and Wartzman have deftly cracked into the wall of secrecy surrounding the Boswells and their often ill-gotten empire, [~doomsdayer520~]

Book Description
"A richly illustrated, reasonably priced account of the burial sites of Egypt's greatest rulers."Houston Chronicle
Here is the definitive account of the Valley of the Kings, visited by millions of tourists and famous throughout the world as the burial place of the great New Kingdom pharaohs. Some eighty tombs were dug in the valley at the height of Egyptian power more than 3,000 years ago, their chambers stocked with incredible treasures and decorated with magnificent wall paintings. It was here, in 1922, that Howard Carter stumbled upon the virtually intact tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamun. Recently the valley has made international headlines with the discovery of the burial chapels of Ramesses the Great's many sons; The Complete Valley of the Kings is the first book to publish an account of these remarkable findings. Reeves and Wilkinson, both acknowledged authorities on the valley, bring together the art, archaeology and history in one exciting account.

Did you know that there are chambers in the bottom of many temples that are still 'uncharted"? Neither did I. This is a great book.
Review of Valley of the Kings.......2005-08-12
This is a truely comprehensive reference book of the Valley and like others in the Thames and Hudson series is a must for scholars of Ancient Egypt. Excellent!
excellent.......2004-02-11
Excellent book, if you are interest in ancient egypt, read this book, you'll learn a lot of interesting facts about the valley of the kings, the pharaohs, etc..
A True Complete Book on the Valley of the Kings.......2002-12-16
It is the best book on the Valley of the Kings. In it you can find not just information but a treasure, a treasure showing the magnificent treasures of ancient Egypt.
Almost completely perfect.......2002-02-28
The Complete Valley of the Kings is a very well-researched, well-written, well-illustrated, and well-organized book. Everything from the topographic and the geologic maps of the valley through the religious and archeological history of the valley were interesting (and sometimes depressing, considering what some of those early adventurers and so-called scholars did to the place). The information on the dismantling of the Valley at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st Dynasty was especially interesting. Of course, the stars of the book were the tombs themselves. The architecture, decoration and history of each tomb is given as fully as possible. My only reservation in regards to this book lies in the authors having made up their minds on the identity of the controversial mummy in KV55 and airily dismissing as unimportant any evidence that contradicts their theory. Such inflexible partiality calls for a cautious approach to any other "definite" conclusions the authors draw. Otherwise, the book is inarguably informative and entertaining, except for the fact that the authors consistently and annoyingly use the Greek forms of the pharaoh's names (such as the Greek Sethos instead of Seti). Other than that, the book really is almost completely perfect.

Once again the incomparable
New York Times bestselling master of suspense, Elizabeth Peters, brings an exotic world of adventure, intrigue, and danger to vivid life, in a tale as exciting, mysterious, and powerful as ancient Egypt.
A unique treasure obtained by unscrupulous means, the small gold statuette of an unidentified Egyptian king is a priceless relic from a bygone era. But more than history surrounds the remarkable artifact -- for it is said that early death will come to anyone who possesses it.
Enjoying a world finally at peace, the Emersons have returned to the Valley of the Kings in 1922. With the lengthy ban on their archaeological activities lifted, Amelia Peabody and her family look forward to delving once more into the age-old mysteries buried in Egypt's ever-shifting sands. But a widow's strange story -- and even stranger request -- is about to plunge them into a storm of secrets, treachery, superstition ... and murder.
The woman, a well-known author, has come bearing an ill-gotten treasure -- a golden likeness of a forgotten king -- which she claims is cursed. Already, she insists, it has taken the life of her husband, and unless it is returned to the tomb from which it was stolen, more people will die.
Intrigued by the mystery, Amelia and her clan resolve to uncover the secrets of the statue's origins, setting off on a trail that twists and turns in directions they never anticipated -- and, perhaps, toward an old nemesis with unscrupulous new designs. But each step toward the truth seems to reveal another peril, suggesting to the intrepid Amelia that the curse is more than mere superstition. And its next victim might well be her irascible husband, Radcliffe, their beloved son, Ramses, his lovely wife, Nefret ... or Amelia Peabody herself.
A novel filled with riveting suspense, pulse-pounding action, and the vibrant life of a fascinating place and time,
The Serpent on the Crown is the jewel in the crown of a grand master, the remarkable Elizabeth Peters.

The Serpent on the Crown by Elizabeth Peters.......2007-07-21
This book was shipped very quickly from the UK and it came in perfect condition. Great product!
Ramses Reincarnated.......2007-07-18
Ever since Ramses grew up, I've missed the pedantic child. I'm delighted to see him now reincarnated in his son, David John. Though my children aren't so precocious, they play an important role in my second comtemporary romance, "Big Bad Wolfe." I look forward to reading "Tomb of the Golden Bird" to see what David John, his twin sister Charlotte, and the rest of the Emersons are up to next.
Another Classic Peabody.......2007-06-25
I just love these books. I love spending time with the Emersons and nothing makes me sadder than when the book ends. I had tears in the end when reminded of the intense love Amelia and Emerson have for each other. These books are romantic, fun, adventurous and educating. What more could you want from a book?
My only issue is Amelia's expressed view of how she wants to leave this world. When she talks about it, my stomache is in a knot and my heart pounds as if she is someone I know and love in real life. She must be etneral on this earth!
Great book!.......2007-06-09
I have been a huge fan of the Amelia Peabody books since the first one came out and this one doesn't disappoint. It has all the same characters we have grown to love, and as usual, interesting new antagonists. It captures the spirit of the age as well as the older ones have, and the allusions to the finding of King Tut's tomb are easily seen by anyone who knows their history. In this book, you really become aware that Amelia and Radcliffe are not immortal and are preparing to pass the torch to Nefret and Ramses. But, as usual, not without a fight! I would recommend this book, and of course the whole series, to anyone who finds Egyptology to be interesting.
Rosenblat tired of Amelia?.......2007-04-23
I thoroughly enjoy the funny and farcical Amelia Peabody books of Elizabeth Peters, and I have listened to a number of them as read by Barbara Rosenblat. She always does a beautiful job with the many characters and accents in each book, but in The Serpent in the Crown I wonder if she's getting a little tired of Amelia and Emerson. They are parodies, of course, but usually endearing characters. In this reading, though, Amelia is officious and shrill without the self-deprecating humor that softens her character; Emerson is just boorish and boring. I found the book, as read by Ms. Rosenblat, humorless and lacking in the usual charm.

Book Description
This richly illustrated book of vintage photographs commemorates one of the most memorable episodes in the history of archaeology: the discovery and exploration in 1922 of the tomb of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (Dynasty 18, ruled ca. 1336–1327 B.C.). These photographs, documenting every stage in the process of discovery, were taken by the renowned archaeological photographer Harry Burton. Burton was a staff member of the Metropolitan Museum Egyptian Expedition when he was “lent” to Howard Carter, the famed excavator of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
From the rock-cut steps leading down to the entrance passage, to the opening of the sealed chambers inside, to the first view of the contents of the tomb and the removal of the objects, Burton’s beautiful black-and-white photographs show thousands of the richly made and decorated objects found in the tomb. Carefully reproduced from Burton’s original prints, the photographs are accompanied by new descriptive text written by two prominent Egyptologists with extensive knowledge of the history of Tutankhamun and the contents of his tomb.

Review of Burton book.......2007-09-05
This is a superb book. The original black & white photographs taken in the tomb by a master photographer are wonderful. I just wish there had been more.
i wanted more..........2007-03-28
everything from the size of this book to the image on its dust jacket is lovely. the book says that harry burton, the man who visually documented the clearance/excavation of kv 62, took some 1,400 images of the tomb's 5,400 objects; the book contains but 78 of these images. there is no substantive exploration of how the man worked but it's a coffee table book, not a bio. the images are vivid and give context and meaning to the find, and mr. burton's photos of the artifacts, particularly those of the metalwork, capture with brilliant clarity the unparalleled craftsmanship, skill, and design sensibility of the ancient egyptian artisans of the 18th dynasty; as his legacy shows, mr. burton surely related to them now and then.
This book is highly recommended -- a great gift for the Egypt lover in your life!.......2006-08-10
If you thought you'd seen everything there was to see about the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, you were wrong! This amazing book is an invaluable addition to the Tut library. I picked up a copy of the book while visiting the Metropolitan Museum, and I can't recommend this book highly enough. The original excavation photos are beautiful and truly give you a sense of what it must have been like to witness the discovery of the tomb. From photos of the landscape in the Valley of the Kings (setting the geographic scene), to photos of the excavators working on the tomb through to object photos, the entire story of the discovery of the tomb is illustrated. Despite their age, the photos are vivid and gorgeous and bring the discovery to life. The accompanying text is kept to a minimum -- narrating the story nicely, but allowing the photos and objects to speak for themselves. (Longer photo captions at the end of the book accompany thumbnail photos, giving more detailed information about each photography.) This book will make a welcome addition to the library of anyone who loves ancient Egypt, a beautiful coffee table book, a nice backdrop or preparation for the King Tut show that's touring, or a lovely gift for anyone interested in Egypt or archaeology.

Book Description
Inca archaeology has traditionally been intimately tied to the study of the Spanish chronicles, but archaeologists are often asked to explain how Inca civilization relates to earlier states and empires in the Andean highlands-a time period with little coinciding documentary record. Until recently, few archaeologists working in and around the Inca heartland conducted archaeological research into the period between AD 1000 and AD 1400, leaving a great divide between pre-Inca archaeology and Inca studies.
In How the Incas Built Their Heartland R. Alan Covey supplements an archaeological approach with the tools of a historian, forming an interdisciplinary study of how the Incas became sufficiently powerful to embark on an unprecedented campaign of territorial expansion and how such developments related to earlier patterns of Andean statecraft. In roughly a hundred years of military campaigns, Inca dominion spread like wildfire across the Andes, a process traditionally thought to have been set in motion by a single charismatic ruler, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. Taking nearly a century of archaeological research in the region around the Inca capital as his point of departure, Covey offers an alternative description of Inca society in the centuries leading up to imperial expansion. To do so, Covey proposes a new reading of the Spanish chronicles, one that focuses on processes, rather than singular events, occurring throughout the region surrounding Cusco, the Inca capital. His focus on long-term regional changes, rather than heroic actions of Inca kings, allows the historical and archaeological evidence to be placed on equal interpretive footing. The result is a narrative of Inca political origins linking Inca statecraft to traditions of Andean power structures, long-term ecological changes, and internal social transformations. By reading the Inca histories in a compatible way, Covey shows that it is possible to construct a unified theory of how the Inca heartland was transformed after AD 1000.
R. Alan Covey is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University.

Book Description
Introduction by Anthony Brandt.
Feverishly we cleared away...the passage before the doorway, until we had only the clean sealed doorway before us.... We made a tiny breach in the top left hand corner to see what was beyond.
There was naturally short suspense for those present who could not see, when Lord Carnarvon said to me `Can you see anything,' I replied to him `Yes, it is wonderful'.... Our sensations and astonishment are difficult to describe as the better light revealed to us the marvellous collection of treasures: two strange ebony-black effigies of a King, gold sandalled, bearing staff and mace, loomed out from the cloak of darkness; gilded couches in strange forms, lion-headed, Hathor-headed, and beast infernal...strange black shrines with a gilded monster snake appearing from within...a golden inlaid throne.... Our sensations were bewildering and full of strange emotion. Was it a tomb or merely a cache? A sealed doorway between the two sentinel statues proved there was more beyond and with the numerous cartouches bearing the name of Tutankhamen...there was little doubt that there behind was the grave of that Pharaoh.
Howard Carter did not live long enough to write further about his finds, and The Tomb of Tutankhamen stands as his only record of the extraordinary discovery. Abridged from the original three volumes, this National Geographic Adventure Classics edition features 25 black-and-white photos taken at the time of the excavation, as well as a map of the Valley of the Kings and the tomb. This classic adventure tells the story of a journey that may never be repeateda trip back through 3,000 years to discover the lifeand deathof a pharaoh.
Customer Reviews:
A riveting account by the man himself.......2006-07-10
This book is impossible to put down. It's Howard Carter's own account, written between 1923 and 1933, while he was at work on Tutankhamen's tomb. Although I half expected a dry, scholarly account, this work reads like a novel by Elizabeth Peters. Carter conveys not only the facts of his fabulous discovery. He makes you feel that you're experiencing this 10 year saga with him--from the excitement of opening the tomb, the awe inspired by its spectacular contents, the difficulties involved in their removal and preservation, down to the annoyance and inconvenience caused by the sudden avalanche of tourists visiting the site and trying to get tours of the tomb.
When reading this book, bear in mind that it's Carter's own memoirs, written at the time. Intervening years and subsequent scholorship have, of course, changed (and hopefully improved) our understanding of the subject.
Also, although this volume contains a few (extremely interesting) black and white photographs taken during the excavation, you'll find yourself wishing for a more complete photographic record of the artifacts to go along with Carter's very detailed descriptions. I recommend getting yourself a really nice coffee table-type picture book of the tomb contents that you can refer to while reading Carter's book.
The Tomb of Tut.Ankh.Amen: The Annex and Treasury.......2006-07-03
If your a serious fan of King Tut and Egyptology, this book is a must. Part III of Howard Carter's three part series, it gives execellent detail on the excavation of the tomb and everything that goes on around it. It will give you a greater appreciation of just what went into the original discovery and it's preservation. Learn more about what we now take for granted.
Carter's Original Still the Best!.......2001-04-06
Howard Carter's stunning discovery in the desert and his excavation of the two stone chambers reads like an adventure novel. It was obviously written in 1930's language, but this new color edition is a wonderful asset to anyone's bookshelf. Thank you Duckworth for bringing this one back to life!
this book is okay..................2000-10-27

Exceptional Series.......2007-10-10
My 9 year-old fell in love with this series, and I was able to find all of the books thanks to Amazon.com. I had to purchase from several sellers, but it was worth it. My daughter has read the entire series through twice, and my 11 year-old is reading them as well.

Daughter & son have this collection and really like the stories.
They say the books are very good.

Ended Abruptly.......2004-12-31
What happens next? In case any of you haven't looked *who've read this book* the back of the book *where it normally tells what happens* has absolutely nothing to do with the series. It doesn't tell how everything gets "put back together again". Hello??? Does anybody care that you're left hanging?
Let The Quest Go On..........2004-02-12
Are you looking for a good book that is beautiful and peaceful? Do you need a book that must have adventure or even lead to death? That humans can talk to animals? Is this the book you want? Well if it is then here's a book that will inspire you! The Unicorns of Balinor Valley of Fear by Mary Stanton. Arianna, Princess of Balinor, is trying to find her parents the King and Queen and her two Brothers the princes. The land they rule is a peaceful valley where Unicorns live. The Celestial Unicorns to be exact. Humans talk to the animals and even to the cows! Some of the unicorns work for the humans and they don't need to be steered or anything. If you say where you need to go,
they go.
This book really inspired me because it has adventure in it. Fore example, there is a hero named Princess Arianna and her horse Chase, then there's Lori. She doesn't like to do every thing that Arianna wants Lori to do. They argue but then Lori
says something so rude that Arianna finally put her foot down and spoke up. See I have liked this book so much that I really had to read the rest. For example...
Lori: "I'm not going now. I am spending the night in a real bed. I'll think about leaving in the morning."
Ari: "You. Will. Do. As. I. Say. I've agreed to your terms, Lori. Now listen to mine...."
So sit back pick up the book and as they say Let the quest go on.

Book Description
Shows how a desecrated tomb in the Valley of the Kings holds the key to the true history of the destruction of Atlantis
⢠Reveals that Tomb 55 in the Valley of the Kings was designed not to keep intruders out, but to trap something inside
⢠Provides forensic evidence proving that the mask believed to be the face of Tutankhamun is actually that of his elder brother Smenkhkare
In Atlantis and the Ten Plagues of Egypt, Graham Phillips explores the excavation of a mysterious and ritually desecrated tomb in the Valley of the Kings, Tomb 55, which he contends holds the key to the true history of the destruction of Atlantis. Unlike other Egyptian tombs designed to keep intruders out, Tomb 55 was constructed to keep something imprisoned within, specifically Smenkhkare, the older brother of Tutankhamun who was deemed responsible for the ten plagues in Egyptian history, to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again. The forensic findings from this tomb coupled with compelling new evidence from the polar ice caps provide sensational evidence that the parting of the Red Sea, the deaths of the first born, and the other plagues that afflicted Egypt were all actual historical events.
Core samples from the polar ice caps indicate that a gigantic volcanic eruption took place in the eastern Mediterranean around the time of Amonhotepâs reign. Other research suggests this to have been the time of the eruption that destroyed the Greek island of Thera, one of the likely locations of Atlantis, and that the subsequent cataclysm may explain the unusual lack of resistance to the new religion installed by Amonhotepâs son, Akhenaten, when he took power several years later.

A Balanced Piece of Detective Work.......2006-03-09
Why is it that the only review to so far have been openly hostile toward Mr. Phillips and his book is chosen as the Spotlight Review, and so end up above all the others? I am an historian from England and, as far as it seems to me, this review by Grand Rapids is not only as highly speculative as the reviewer claims Mr. Phillips's book to be, but it is vehemently anti-British. There is no way this should have been chosen as the Spotlight Review for what - in my professional opinion, at least - is a well-argued and balanced piece of historical detective work. Who is doing the choosing here?
A catastrophe theory that no longer sounds so improbable........2005-01-07
This is a cleverly written historical detective story set against a backdrop of in-depth and scholarly research. The author finds archaeological and scientific evidence to suggest that certain seemingly unbelievable destructive events recorded in the Old Testament really occurred. To give an example, he puts together discoveries from Egyptian tombs with geological surveys of the Mediterranean seabed to show that a huge tsunami may have thrashed the Egyptian coast in the fourteenth century BCE to cause what the Bible describes as the parting of the Red Sea in which the Pharaoh's army was drowned by a gigantic wave. This event, the book suggests, could also have devastated a civilization on the island of Crete to give rise to the legend of Atlantis. Many crazy and unfounded ideas have found their way into print concerning Atlantis and biblical mysteries in recent years but this is definitely not one of those. The author critically examines the findings of accredited archaeologists, Egyptologists and scientists in developing his hypotheses which he arrives at step by logical step. Historians today tend to shy away from sensational-sounding catastrophe theories when it comes to the decline of ancient civilizations, but following the tragic events in south Asia recently this book makes one think seriously about just how devastating natural cataclysms can really be.
Egyptian history brought back to life.......2004-12-20
If you were fed up with books about Ancient Egypt and never thought you would read one again, then try this. It is a really fascinating read. In short, the theme is that Exodus plagues of the Bible were true events caused by a natural catastrophe, but there is far more here that is enlightening and engaging. The author examines the period when the Exodus appears to be set - sometime in the fourteenth century BC - and, by using the records that survive from that time, he paints a vivid picture of one of the most fascinating and little understood eras of human history: when the idea of a single god first became a part of organized religion. He also proposes answers to a number of historical enigmas, such as the identity of the real Moses and the truth behind the Atlantis legend, and introduces a new mystery of his own - that the famous facemask of Tutankhamun does not represent the king at all but his scheming brother. In my opinion, this last riddle alone makes the book well worth reading.
fact and fiction.......2004-12-20
This book is a mix of fact and fiction, but then again many books today are like that. My advice to you is be skeptical about any author that he knows the truth of a major historical event. IF any real truth is found, the media and many REAL scholars such as arecheologists and university professors will be talking about it.
There are many books that talk what really happened to Tutankamen, and his brother. Weather he really is Moses, there is simply not enough proof. maybe yes, maybe no.
After reading the Da Vinci Code, it makes one think. What really is true. Is history really fabricated by the World Elite and secretly held by Secret Societies.
Well, people certainly buy the books that says the later, if they continue to sell, publishers will keep coming out with it.
If you really want to learn the truth. Go to Egypt on a tour and see for yourself. There is nothing like personal experience. BEst of luck and happy treasure hunting!!!!!
An Egyptian blockbuster - It has to be.......2004-12-19
It begins with the opening of the strangest tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings. A mummy whose name has been erased and its soul bound by talismans of magical protection. An ancient Egyptian who was so feared that the priesthood thought they had to imprison his spirit for all time. It all sounds like fiction - but it's not. Each detail of the find is preserved in the writings of the archaeologists who found it and can still be read today. It is remarkable that no one has brought the details of this discovery to light before. This alone would make a great movie. But it's only the beginning.
His quest to discover the identity of this mummy and the reasons for its strange and unique form of burial, leads the author to make what must be the most astonishing series of discoveries about Egyptian history that have ever been made. Moses, the plagues of Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea and the Exodus really occurred as described in the Bible. Beyond belief? Graham Phillips produces archaeological, historical and scientific evidence to prove it. This too would also make a fantastic movie in its own right. But it doesn't end there. The author discovers that these events were the result of a gigantic volcanic cataclysm that also created the legend of Atlantis. Another movie here!
Ultimately, Phillips returns to the mysterious mummy, concluding that it was the earthly remains of the man whose evil influence was deemed responsible for the catastrophe - a forgotten Egyptian king named Smenkhkare, the brother of Tutankhamun. Finally, he reveals the most incredible fact of all. The fabulous treasures found in Tut's tomb were originally intended for his brother's tomb and the death mask of Tutankhamun - probably the most famous historical artifact ever found - really bears the face of Smenkhkare - the most feared man in Egyptian history. Yet another movie! Why and how this came to be, would be giving away a nail-biting finale of this well-written, well-researched and page-turner of a book.
This book has been in publication for over a year. If it is not in pre-production for a big-budget movie by now I would be very surprised. I reckon that sometime in the next couple of years this will be a blockbuster to rival National Treasure. Remember who said it first.
