The events of September 11 have seemingly been covered, analyzed, and discussed from every angle imaginable. So the subject matter alone of Jim DeFede's The Day the World Came to Town makes it noteworthy. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, 38 commercial airliners carrying over 6,000 passengers were forced, as a precautionary measure, to land in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. Due to the ongoing closure of U.S. airspace, the passengers spent four days in this isolated town of 10,000 before being allowed to continue on their way. In that time, Gander's residents rallied together to extend a kind of hospitality that seems too expansive for the word hospitality. Townspeople not only opened schools and legion halls for use as emergency shelters, they invited the passengers into their homes for showers, meals, and warm beds while local businesses simply gave toiletries and clothing to passengers stuck without luggage. Despite the grim consequences that led to the situation, DeFede finds humor: two flight attendants are offered a car for sightseeing by a local woman who happened to be driving by; the stranded chairman of Hugo Boss finds himself shopping for men's underwear at the local Wal-Mart. But the real message of the book is how, even in times of great turmoil and conflict, people can and must look to one another for comfort, help, and hope. --John Moe
Book Description
"For the better part of a week, nearly every man, woman, and child in Gander and the surrounding smaller towns stopped what they were doing so they could help. They placed their lives on hold for a group of strangers and asked for nothing in return. They affirmed the basic goodness of man at a time when it was easy to doubt such humanity still existed."
When thirty-eight jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, due to the closing of United States airspace, the citizens of this small community were called upon to come to the aid of more than six thousand displaced travelers.
Roxanne and Clarke Loper were excited to be on their way home from a lengthy and exhausting trip to Kazakhstan, where they had adopted a daughter, when their plane suddenly changed course and they found themselves in Newfoundland. Hannah and Dennis O'Rourke, who had been on vacation in Ireland, were forced to receive updates by telephone on the search for their son Kevin, who was among the firefighters missing at the World Trade Center. George Vitale, a New York state trooper and head of the governor's security detail in New York City who was returning from a trip to Dublin, struggled to locate his sister Patty, who worked in the Twin Towers. A family of Russian immigrants, on their way to the Seattle area to begin a new life, dealt with the uncertainty of conditions in their future home.
The people of Gander were asked to aid and care for these distraught travelers, as well as for thousands more, and their response was truly extraordinary. Oz Fudge, the town constable, searched all over Gander for a flight-crew member so that he could give her a hug as a favor to her sister, a fellow law enforcement officer who managed to reach him by phone. Eithne Smith, an elementary-school teacher, helped the passengers staying at her school put together letters to family members all over the world, which she then faxed. Bonnie Harris, Vi Tucker, and Linda Humby, members of a local animal protection agency, crawled into the jets' cargo holds to feed and care for all of the animals on the flights. Hundreds of people put their names on a list to take passengers into their homes and give them a chance to get cleaned up and relax.
The Day the World Came to Town is a positively heartwarming account of the citizens of Gander and its surrounding communities and the unexpected guests who were welcomed with exemplary kindness.

Great quick read.......2007-07-12
It was great to read a book about 9/11 that had a positive spin. The description of the town and characters makes me want to visit Gander Newfoundland someday.
How a town came to t he rescue of stranded passengers and crew.......2007-05-13
This is an absolutely fascinating true story of how the residents of Gander, Newfoundland, rallied around when many aircraft were diverted there on 9/11 when US airspace was closed. How the town coped with more planes and people than it had ever seen before at once is a legendary story of human kindness and support for others. Very hard to put down once started. Will bring tears (mainly of joy) to many eyes.
A Story About the Truest and Kindest People on Earth.......2006-09-29
My son and daughter-in-law were part of the mass of passengers stranded in Newfoundland after 9-11 and I will always be grateful to the Newfies for the loving way that they cared for them. I am also grateful to Jim Defede for writing this book to thank them for all of us.
This book clearly shows how people the world over should be living their lives. Thank you Newfies.
Interesting Subject but Poorly Written.......2006-09-11
I found this book to be extremely interesting. It tells of a true story unknown to many. However, while the subject was excellent, the quality of the writing was poor. I would not conider this book a final product. It is similar to a draft, with words spelled incorrectly and improper grammar. The publishers should be ashamed for printing such a poor quality manuscript that had not been proof read.
The Best of Human Nature.......2006-05-19
If you ever wanted to read a book that took the best part of human nature, you've found it. The people behind 9/11 were expecting the worst of humanity to come about, instead the result was the best humanity. The people of Gander captured my heart and I would love to meet those wonderful people who took strangers in from around the world. This book will move you to tears and astound you in ways you never thought possible. The spirit of kindness is alive and well in Gander, Newfoundland. I love the United States, but we could learn a thing or two from these wonderful in what to do in the event of a tragedy.
Book Description
The firm of Patkau Architects, founded in 1978 and based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has achieved international renown for work that draws on the principles of modern architecture and is simultaneously inspired by the traditions and often spectacular landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The office is known for a straightforward, multifaceted expression of material and detail as well as a focus on the sculpture that is inherent in architecture.
This comprehensive monograph includes cultural and institutional projects, such as the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, the National Library of Quebec in Montreal, and a major addition to the Winnipeg Centennial Library; schools, notably the Seabird Island School and the Strawberry Vale School; and a series of residences, including the Shaw house, with a dramatic elevated lap pool, and the inventive Petite Maison du Weekend (Small Weekend House), a prototype for a self-sufficient holiday house for two.

The great Architect of Northern America of Today.......2007-09-21
I have met her through my school days in MA. As a guest critic, she was a great mentor and great designer herself. She even showed up to give an unscheduled private review sessions with one or two of us before she was heading back to Canada the next day and, I was impressed and much thankful for her passion and care for the education.
The book itself does not cover all of her professional works as an architect or as a professor but it was good enough to introduce her name out as it is somehow difficult finding her name or works out internationally.
If you are a student looking for a consistent yet tectonic architect, this book is a good introduction to what a passionate $ insightful architect produces over the time. I hope to see more of her great works in the future.
A great picture book!.......2007-03-08
With plenty of large format pictures, this book helps to capture the detail for which the Patkau's are famous. And an essay by Kenneth Frampton doesn't hurt. This is my complaint about most Monologues: not enough process/methodology information. As an architect, I am more interested in HOW they solve particular design problems, than just the beautiful end product. But overall, this book is better than the their first [depth of analysis and range of products].
(Lazy?) Maturity .......2007-01-15
Patkau has been my favorite not only because of its formal language which is undoubtedly influenced by Aalto and 90' Morphosis, but also of its rigorous examination of every line, angle, corner, fenestration, texture, etc. all of which best exemplified by Seabird island school and Strawberry vale school. While the latter is arguably overdone, both of them masterfully guide circulation and elevate genius loci with precisely positioned (figural) elements, a method also seen in Haus Tugendhat by Mies.
Unlike tectonic poetry pursued by Todd William & Billie Tsien that often comes down to the choice of fastener type for a detail, Patkau approaches tectonics in a hierarchical order that operates at the design level like structural articulation, material palette, and construction system. That said, one can certainly appreciate surprises like, say, steel plate canopy in Barnes house, or imaginary deleted gutter in Gleneagles Community Centre that allows rain strolling down the roof into landscape.
However, Patkau seems to (intentionally?) deviate from its established site-specific approach when it comes to larger scale projects. Case in the point: Grande Bibliotheque du Quebec. Here Patkau chose to neglect civic and contextual challenge/opportunity with a homogeneous, if not abstract, plan and construction that resulted in an introverted and hard edged building (perhaps the climate or they spend too much on the channel glass skin?). Conversely, Bolles-Wilson successfully answers to challenges of greater magnitude with a complex yet poetic weaving of highly differentiated space and tectonics in the splendid Munster City Library project.
Hence the title.... If you are interested in an earlier yet already mature Patkau, I would recommend "Patkau Architects: Selected Projects 1983-1993", a nicely edited monograph featuring additional projects and illustration, such as original scheme for Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery design competition.
great form.......2007-01-10
A must for architects interested in challenging their approach to contemporary forms in architecture. A wonderful expression of the models involved in the designing process, a must for the contemporary architect.
Long overdue monograph,,, finally in bookstore !.......2007-01-06
Based on Frampton, PA's architecture can be divided more or less chronologically into two groups.
First group are the buildings that emphasize the combination of earthwork
and roofwork. This group holds the indigenous spirit of the specific
place, telling the story of totem and genius loci expressed in the
irregularity of forms. On the other hand, second group are the projects,
built more recently in an urban setting, that speaks and advocates the
modern approach of universal values manifested in the form of orthogonal
approach.
Chronologically different in attitudes, all the projects have same
attitude towards the poetics of construction. Its organic forms expressed
in wood, its attention to the details and play of light, and its almost
mythical symbolism to site aligns to the approaches of Aalto, Scarpa, and
Fehn. (Per Frampton)
Personally, three projects were favored: Barns House (`93), Canadian Clay
and Glass Gallery (`92), and Grande Bibliotheque du Quebec ('05).
Barns House and Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery is an interplay of
lightness and heaviness. Almost bird's wing-like roof is paired with
smooth hard concrete floor. Likewise, light wooden fenestrations
ungravitate the presence of cmu wall. The anchoring of floor and walls
really emphasize the freedom towards the sky and forest.
One of the most current built projects, Grande Bibliotheque du Quebec,
illustrates PA's future potentials. More advanced and innovative in its
use of materials, but still, basics are same. Structural concrete is in
striking contrast to the light veil systems. This winning scheme of
international competition proved that PA's architecture does not bind
itself to the rural site with single-story program.
Less oriented in theory and abstraction, the projects provide ample
pleasure of making and specificity of architecture.

Still a Winner.......2003-05-10
When I marketed work for Writers' Showplace I always used Jeff Herman's book as a reference. Now that Writers' Showplace has closed its door I've opened another business, The Writer's Guide.Com and I still have Mr. Herman's book close at hand.
On the other hand.......2002-12-30
This is a huge and expensive book. It's also, for my purposes, terribly out of date. Several of the agents I've contacted have moved or are longer in the business. It has some very good features such as the advice section but I could've gotten the same advice for free from the internet. As other reviewers have noted there is an easier and cheaper way to get writing information. Pick up a book that is similar to the stuff that you write. Go to the dedication or thanks page and read it. Many authors thanks their agents and editors. Write down those names and track them down. It takes more time but it's easier on your pocketbook and will probably be more accurate.
Next year I will by the Writer's Market book instead.
Overflowing with information!.......2002-07-18

Is the bible of the writers. Is a tool for professional writers. It's great for the writers that have collided with the established high standards of the world of publishing, even being them good writers. Read this book and push your talent and you will be published. Many times, depend of what kind of material you wirte. So you need to know what the publisher or the agent are looking for or need. And Jeff Herman (a great agent) guide you for the publishing labyrinth. He tell you how to catch the free time of the editors...and who to contact in that industry. Get the book!

Book Description
These original essays by eminent sociologists probe issues of central importance to North American societies in the twenty-first century.
The chapters in part 1 revise theory and methods to comprehend the economic and political institutions that increasingly dominate the lives of individuals and groups, arguing that these giants must be made more democratically accountable. Part 2 explores the social effects that growing globalization, transnationalization, and information technologies are having on politics, economics, and the environment. The final chapters compare how new immigrants from increasingly diversified backgrounds are being absorbed in Canada and the United States, exploring the impact that immigrants are having on preexisting ethnic minorities and on the dominant political culture.
While it is a major attempt to refocus the discipline of sociology, the book's clear, nontechnical style and its attention to issues of central concern to all citizens make it also highly accessible to nonspecialists.
Contributors are Janet L. Abu-Lughod, Tomas Almaguer, Giovanni Arrighi, Gilles Bourque, Randall Collins, Jules Duchastel, Joe Feagin, Harriet Friedmann, Pierre Hamel, Moon-Kie Jung, Joel Levine, Henri Lustiger-Thaler, Louis Maheu, Joel Perlmann, Saskia Sassen, Gideon Sjoberg, Dorothy Smith, Roger Waldinger, and Barry Wellman.
Book Description
Studio Ceramics in Canada is both a comprehensive history and a beautiful, full-colour book. But it is also much more. It is an in-depth look at the growth of ceramics and pottery-making as art forms, from their humble beginnings after World War I to the dynamism and diversity of today. Written by cultural historian Gail Crawford, a pioneer recorder of the history of fine craft, Studio Ceramics in Canada is the result of a decade of research. Conducting extensive work in the field of studio ceramics, Crawford traveled from coast to coast, undertaking countless interviews and combing public and private collections to detail the unique ceramics histories of every province and region. She touches on subjects such as clay deposits, teachers and mentors, as well as artisans and their specialties. Linking clay practice in Canada with critical developments in England and the United States, Crawford also pays homage to the people who helped bring ceramics and pottery-making into mainstream culture. Writing about people such as Bobs Howarth, who helped OntarioÂ's Central Technical School become the epicentre of pottery; Alice Hagen, who ran a pottery school out of her Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, home for many years; Léopold Foulem, a Quebec-based ceramist and cult figure with a national and international following; Luke Lindoe of Alberta, one of the 20th centuryÂ's clay giants; founding member of the Whitehorse PottersÂ' Guild, Peter Royle; and a plethora of artists from points in between, Crawford leaves no stone unturned. Published by Goose Lane Editions in cooperation with the Gardiner Museum, Studio Ceramics in Canada contains 170 sumptuous full-colour images of art works and more than 200 archival photographs of influential artists, studios and exhibitions. But itÂ's CrawfordÂ's great attention to detail and love for the art form that separates this book from the rest. Destined to become the definitive history of Canadian ceramics and pottery, Studio Ceramics in Canada is the first book of its kind. It is both textural and visual, wholly delving into each region to introduce the artists, craftspeople, instructors, retailers, curators, teaching institutions and collectors who share a passion for objects transformed by fire.

Book Description
Gord Peteran, an artist living in Toronto, has been designing site-specific works of public art and furniture for the past 25 years. His innovative work has been shown in many exhibitions in the U.S. and Canada. Peteran describes woodworking and metalworking as his "paints and brushes. They possess the appropriate physical resistance and wield the kind of sensual, visual impact that allow my investigations to become real." Gord Peteran: Furniture Meets its Maker catalogs the first large exhibit of his work, traveling from Milwaukee to four other museums in the U.S. and Canada.
Distributed for the Milwaukee Art Museum.

See the Exhibit, Buy the Book.......2007-01-07
Gord Peteran is a fine craftsman with an even finer sense of visual playfulness. Furniture is not usually smile-producing, but the premier exhibit of his works, Furniture Meets Its Maker, does just that. Massive doors become canvasses and wood scraps from the workshop floor become tables. Peteran terms his work "furnitural" - a nod to the sculptural element in what he does.
The book is a wonderful thing. The long foldout pages allow the viewer to enjoy the details of his craft and the text reflects the artist's obvious capriciousness. The paper is of a fine quality and adds to the pleasure of this volume.
See the works in person while you can, and get the book to continue the enjoyment.
