Book Description

A private war is being waged on city playgrounds and in high school gyms in the never-ending search for the next big player, and the potential millions in sales that player could bring to the major athletic shoe companies by endorsing their products. For every legitimate spokesman like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant (the respective endorsers for Nike and Adidas) there are dozens of teenage kids all over North America who are lavished with brand new sneakers, expensive clothes, new athletic gear, or free trips in an attempt to gain their athletic shoe brand loyalty. And that's just where this sordid story begins.

A private war is being waged on city playgrounds and in high school gyms in the never-ending search for the next big player--and the potential millions in sales that player could bring to the major athletic shoe companies by endorsing their products. Far from the glamour of the NBA or the NCAA Final Four, the sport has changed into a high-stakes war of greed and includes such tactics as expensive gifts, pampered perks, grade fixing, standardized-test fraud, and kickback recruitments. For every legitimate spokesman like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant (the respective endorsers for Nike and adidas) there are dozens of teenage kids all over America who are lavished with brand new sneakers, expensive clothes, new athletic gear, or free trips (parents included) in an attempt to gain their athletic shoe brand loyalty. And that's just where this sordid story begins.

Hi my name is quin and I live in Missouri. I dont like what they say about myron piggie. he is a good man. otherwise the book was pretty good. i recommend it for college basketball fans.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting delve into amateur athletics ..........2003-04-27

However not always balanced, SOLE is a page turner for sports fans that enjoy the stories off the playing arena.

Wetzel and Yaeger provide interesting cases and a great work of journalism, however the line between reporting and storytelling is often blurred.

The best way to enjoy this book is to come away entertained, informed, but not disillusioned.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Hoops Book!!!.......2001-06-02

Buy this book. Love it.

A great look at how the big corporate money of the shoe industry has tainted high school level and college basketball, not to mention all of those who are involved in it.

A surprising aspect of the book is the names of villians who you would not believe; Billy Packer, Dickie V, George Raveling, and Roy Williams are a few who are found "guilty" of killing the game that I love.

This book will expose you to the negative underworkings of the great game of college basketball.

5 out of 5 stars It explores the seamier side of sports........2001-02-24

I knew that high school and in some cases elementary school athletes in sports like basketball and football that are extremely gifted can get free perks, but I didn't think it would go as far as it did. The fact is there is a lot of fingerpointing at the athletes, but very little at the others involved in the game. Let's face it, no one would care about these sports if there wasn't a relatively high standard of quality players available. Everyone involved in the game makes money off the players, from the coaches, universities, athletic apparel companies, broadcasters, etcetera, you name it. It's about time that college athletes and high school athletes receive fair market value for the money they generate. The point is many schools would be probably be in a lot worse financial shape if it weren't for basketball and football. Yes, it exposes the greed behind the players, but it's human nature at work. I don't agree with the tactics employed by the agents and companies involved to get players, but I do understand the motivation for doing so. If they don't get these players, some other competing agent or company likely will get their services. It's no different than when univerisities engage in recruiting practices, and some of these universities can get put on probation for recruiting violations. All in all, this was a realistic look at what goes on in youth basketball. I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to explore the dark side of amateur basketball. An excellent companion book to this would be the book Money Players, which looks at things from the NBA perspective.

4 out of 5 stars Outrage, a complete lack of ethics..........2000-06-19

I've suspected for decades that the college recruiting process was (is), to a certain extent, corrupt.

To even the casual observer of college basketball, at the upper echelon of Division I, there is (has been) an uneven playing field. It's as if some colleges have had the top five picks in the annual draft for several years in a row.

On the surface the uneven playing field seems impossible to explain, but books like "Sole Influence" begin to shed light of the corruption that mars college basketball -- the search for the next Michael Jordan.

In a series of anecdotes, the authors provide case studies of how, especially, Nike and Addidas have made a mess of AAU basketball, especially in large urban centers.

It's difficult, almost impossible, to get first hand information, especially from big-name college coaches -- few go on the record. What "Sole Influence" reveals, seems to me, is the tip of the iceberg.

The most shocking revelations surround the role played by George Raveling, the former head coach at Washington State, Iowa and USC. Thankfully, Raveling made himself available to the authors and provides candid comments which, while attempting to rationalize his role in this sorry mess, tend to indict him as one of the prime offenders.

The book, although poorly edited, contains much food for thought and is worthy of reading and reflection by serious college basketball fans.

The authors include a good index, but omit footnotes and a bibliography of sources. Also, a complete list of names of persons interviewed for the book would have been appreciated. To the layman, many of these "characters" are complete strangers.

The authors have included capsule introductions to the book's key "characters," which are especially helpful for those of us unfamiliar with the shoe company corruption of AAU basketball.

I agree with those who've commented about the book's excessive repetition, as the authors do a thorough job of indicting the shoe companies.

The authors do provide some implied remedies for the problems they've documented. Whether these recommendations are feasible, given the hunger for dollars, is questionable and discouraging.

Again, this title is recommended for college basketball fans who care about the integrity of the game. The book makes me wonder to what extent college basketball has integrity.

2 out of 5 stars What is up the profane language?.......2007-10-04

I was not to moved by this book. I asked my son to read it out loud to me and of course he paused the majority of the time because of the profanity in the book. Young black men have a tendency to grow up around profane language and circumstances that are not accomodating to their life and the writer should have took into consideration that if their are a lack of black male role models for young males that makes them seek something or someone that they can relate whether that is good or bad. The title "A young black man in America" with this type of language is promoting profanity which promotes mental negativity and the lack of need to broaden their language and keep a limited vocabulary. This book is a written confirmation that not only should you think before you speak but think before you write. Their is not enough respect among young males to begin with and the writer can relate to them without nurturing their profane vocab or disrespectful mentality. We need writers that have a positive impact on the reader and not one that promotes the typical behavior I see from most young black males.

4 out of 5 stars Good book that tells it like it is.......2006-06-25

Follow the life of Nathan Mc Call in this book, see how America works through his eyes. This book was thought provoking, eye opening and sad.

You feel for Nathan and what he goes through but you don't really end up liking who he is as a person. This book allows you to see what it is like growing up as a black male in America.

Education, jail, work, crime, children, friendships with white people. This book is open and honest and I recommend it to anyone who wants to begin to try and understand and see what it is like growing up as a black male.

It certainly opened my eyes!

5 out of 5 stars Walking in other shoes.......2006-06-20

This book hurts to read. So much pain in so many lives. But what McCall does is put you in his shoes--this is no easy task for someone who is both white and female. It opens a huge door of understanding. It is not a book for the immature or the fearful. I read some of these reviews and wondered, "What book did they read?" Definately not light reading. Powerful, frightening, enlightening. Needs to be read.

5 out of 5 stars The reality in the race relationships in the United States .......2006-04-25

I have read this book over and over and I still find parallels in the life of Nathan McCall and my own life. Mc Call calls it as it is, the society that we live in is not leveled and only one group that gets all the privileges. That there is no recognition that the success of the whites was made on the backs of African Americans that worked for free, and gave that wealth that even today whites get to enjoy. To many people who think that racism is a thing of the past this book is a revelation and goes deeply into the inherit truths of racism and its consequences. Many people think that black teenagers are "ready" for a life of crime, but the truth is that a hypocritical racist society has designated a path for those teenagers, to see a prove of this just look at school systems in white and black neighborhoods. It is like we are living under two separate states, same flag, same country but different standards of living and I'm not talking about 1862 or 1963, I'm talking about 2006. This book is very powerful with a strong sad message.

5 out of 5 stars Suburban Shakedown.......2006-01-21

Nathan McCall shares his personal story as a "wild child" of color, becoming a man in a racially prejudices country; his crimes and imprisonment, gang warfare, street smarts and wisdom, and finding his way to truth and sanity.

Not diminishing responsibility for his own life choices, McCall's story is very real and honest. It challenges America's institutional establishments of prejudice and cruelty, illustrating the imbalances in a white dominated world.

Book Description

With an introduction by Jerry W. Ward, Jr.

Black Boy is a classic of American autobiography, a subtly crafted narrative of Richard Wright's journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. An enduring story of one young man's coming off age during a particular time and place, Black Boy remains a seminal text in our history about what it means to be a man, black, and Southern in America.

"Superb...The Library of America has insured that most of Wright's major texts are now available as he wanted them to be tread...Most important of all is the opportunity we now have to hear a great American writer speak with his own voice about matters that still resonate at the center of our lives."
--Alfred Kazin, New York Time Book Review

"The publication of this new edition is not just an editorial innovation, it is a major event in American literary history."
--Andrew Delbanco, New Republic

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-09-29

This is my all time favourite book ever. I'm sure there are literary drawbacks to it somewhere; but overall I think its an amazingly well written book. Poignant, stark, and unfathomable. Reading it made me so hungry, you wouldn't believe.

5 out of 5 stars Not the best edition to have.......2007-09-15

Much as I love and admire this book--a must-read in American literature--this is not the best edition to have. Wright originally wrote the book in two parts: "Southern Night," about his experiences in the South; and "The Horror and the Glory." His original title for the two-part book was AMERICAN HUNGER.

When it was selected as a primary selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club--a great honor at that time, which tripled the sales of the book--he was asked to remove "The Horror and the Glory" and just publish the first section, "Southern Night." That was the book he retitled BLACK BOY. It is a pure memoir of his life as an aspirational but deeply alienated black growing up in the South.

Recent editions of the book have restored "The Horror and the Glory" to the text, and you might think this is a good thing. I don't think it is, in this case. That section purports to continue his memoir with his experiences in Chicago. However, unfortunately--and ironically--the Book of the Month Club editors were right from an artistic standpoint. "The Horror and the Glory" is completely different in tone. It largely recounts Wright's involvement in the Communist Party of the 1930s, and is deeply enmeshed in party politics. It embodies Wright's own feelings of devotion to Communism and Communist ideals even as it recounts his repudiation of the party.

I have nothing against Wright having been a Communist per se; my objections are not political at all but purely artistic. This second part of the book has none of the directness and immediacy of the first part; it is far less entertaining, and much more of a chore to read. Actually, the first part of the book (about two-thirds of its length) does indeed stand alone as a cohesive, coherent narrative. This is how it was issued, and, actually, it's how it should be read. The second part merely dilutes the artistic impact of the first part, rather than adding to it.

"The Horror and the Glory" was published originally in a motley of smaller articles, in the Atlantic Monthly and elsewhere. The issues it raises--internal Communist party politics and their relationships to the John Reed Clubs and their associated writers' groups--are somewhat interesting historically, but dated and ultimately irrelevant. It feels very much like commentary on facts and events you're expected to know about, but don't.

I suggest readers either purchase an edition that is true to the first edition, and contains only what in this edition is called "Southern Night," or else consider just reading the first part and letting the second part go. I think it's a better book the way it was originally issued.

5 out of 5 stars Searching for Humanity.......2007-06-26

Richard Wrights autobiographical book is all the more remarkable in so much that it exists and was written by a man born to fail by society and given every hinderence to his thirst and love for life and reading.

Wrights book never becomes mawkish or pious. It simply tells it how it was;deep south society at the turn of the century and the black peoples place in it. Wright is open about his own failings-taunting jews, his childhood alcoholism-but there was no escape for him no matter how hard he tried to get ahead. A painful scene comes when young Wright thinks he is 'getting ahead' by selling newspapers to have a wiser black head point out he is actually selling ku klux klan literature. His love for books is hampered by the law banning blacks from libraries.

He comes across liberals who try to help him, but there is only so much anyone can do in a society swamped by prejudices.

The sad end is when Wright traveled up to the north; Chicago, where 'Blacks are free' The memoir ends here, but further reading of Wrights work-and that of his admirers and contemporaries such as Ralph Ellison-makes you aware that this was just another myth.Yes,life wasn't as oppressive as the south, but the 'liberals' liked the blacks to stay in the 'black belt'(a favourite term of Wrights) and used all means at disposal should they get 'Uppity'.

Wright inspired Ellison and Baldwin amongst others, but I feel sure he must have inspired MLK as well, as all Wright ever really wanted was human dignity for all mankinds peoples.

4 out of 5 stars Read it for the second time!.......2007-04-25

This book is an early years autobiography of Richard Wright, the famed and accomplished African American author. I read all of Mr. Wright's books when I was in junior high school and wanted to share them with my teenage daughter. In doing so, I picked up "Black Boy" and couldn't put it down until I read it again.

Richard Wright was raised in the South in the 1920's. He experienced the hardships, poverty, and racism of those days and relays these experiences descriptively yet simply in the book. The reader can can see and feel the events without being bored.

"Black Boy" is a quick one- or two-day read, and I recommend it highly. I also highly recommend one of Mr. Wright's fictional novels, "Native Son."

4 out of 5 stars Hearing Wright's Life and Our Own.......2007-04-05

Peter Francis James's performance of Richard Wright's autobiography brings many of its aural qualities our ears, qualities we may not notice in a silent reading of the book. These CDs enable both the visually impaired and the sighted to enjoy Wright's classic and to ponder why after sixty-two years the book still provides insights about American culure.

Book Description

When parents send their children off to college, mom and dad hope they'll return more cultivated, knowledgeable, and astute--able to see issues from all points of view. But, according to Ben Shapiro, there's only one view allowed on most college campuses: a rabid brand of liberalism that must be swallowed hook, line, and sinker. In this explosive book, Ben Shapiro, a college student himself, reveals how America's university system is one of the largest brainwashing machines on the planet. Examining this nationwide problem from firsthand experience, Shapiro shows how the leftists who dominate the universities--from the administration to the student government, from the professors to the student media--use their power to mold impressionable minds. Fresh and bitterly funny, this book proves that the universities, far from being a place for open discussion, are really dungeons of the mind that indoctrinate students to become socialists, atheists, race-baiters, and narcissists.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars College Isn't What It Used to Be.......2007-06-10

There is little doubt that America's colleges and universities have a leftist mindset that is used to teach only from one side of the political spectrum. So sure that this is the natural order of things that even their apologists argue that such a one world vision is the result of educational Darwinism--that those on the right simply choose to work in the world of business rather than in the world of ideas. In BRAINWASHED, Ben Shapiro explains how this mass indoctrination is as deeply entrenched as it is. Shapiro is a recent graduate and the memories of four years of Marxist, feminist, Hispanic, socialist, and environmentalist professors are permanently etched in his brain. And what he has personally witnessed forms the bulk of his book. He further refines his thesis by interviews with hostile professors who seem astounded when even one student has a contrary opinion. From the time that a student enters college as a freshman to the time that he graduates, Shapiro accuses that college of a deliberate act of groupthink mind control in which that student has been thoroughly inculcated in what now passes for a modern liberal education. Such a student will have a powerful tendency to accept any and all the following: the Democratic Party cares about the "little guy" while the Republican Party cares only for the wealthy industrialists; the War in Iraq is a total disaster and our troops deserve to suffer and die; gays not only have a right to come out of the closet, they expect all non-gays to view the world as their new closet; God does not have any impact on our daily lives nor in the lives of our Founding Fathers either; all students from kindergarten to grad school must be exposed to sex in the class and if they object, why then they are labeled as intolerant; it is permissible for Jews to be Jews (in the previous belief that it was ok for gays to be gays in the closet) but as soon as Jews speak up in defense of Israel, they are termed racist, anti-Moslem, and imperialist; and the curriculums of all colleges have been denuded of traditional courses to be replaced by Queer Theory, Feminist studies, and Marxism.

Shapiro uses extensive documentation to prove that his accusations are the norm and not the exception in America's colleges. He names hundreds of professors who are not bashful in their views that their leftist views are in fact mainstream while conservative views simply have no place anywhere on campus. My gut level reaction to Shapiro is that if anything he has understated the case. Most college students are totally unaware that their professors have abdicated their roles as impartial dispensers of truth. As such books like this one are desperately needed as a corrective. Yet I doubt that Ben Shapiro will be a name that will appear anytime soon on any syllabus.

1 out of 5 stars No substance at all.......2007-06-10

This book has no substance at all and seems very poorly researched. Many of the arguments the author makes clearly have no empirical basis at all. The fact that this was published mostly seems to be related to its polemic character and the political conflicts within which it situates itself. Reactionary propaganda and not worth reading at all.

5 out of 5 stars Being a new college grad, this book is 100% ACCURATE.......2007-03-12

It really just makes me sick how our education system is turning out. Shapiro does his best to uncover a lot of the indoctrination, but somehow I dont think many people will listen until its too late. Overall, its a great book and I really recommend it to anyone. I actually made copies of of the inside and cover, and plan on posting them all around campus. Thats sure to p*ss a few libs off!!

5 out of 5 stars Joining in the debate..........2007-03-06

I have not read this book, I'll say that first off, but I do understand Mr. Shapiro's general point. I have friends that identify with conservatism, and I personally have not sorted out my own political ideology. I hope to do so in college. My experience with college friends is that liberalism is more accepted. This is a shame. There should be more open intellectual discourse.

This should not turn into a liberal/conservative bashing war. Members of both groups make life difficult for each other at times. This does not mean everyone in each group is immature, or even that one group is more right or more wrong. The personalities of certain ideological adherents do not--or at least should not--taint the ideology itself. It is simply a matter of perspective. Ready? Everyone breathe. Everyone's perspective is right, it's just different. Tolerance can come on both ends, eh?

One reviewer said that Mr. Shapiro did not align himself with a political perspective in his book--an excellent ideal to strive for, and one that would strengthen his argument. However, Mr. Shapiro does not show tolerance or lack of political alignment in other publications. I was directed to reading up on this book through an article of his on the initiative in Washington to legalize procreation as a marriage requirement. "The Homosexual Assault on Traditional Marriage" sets up a totem pole that is a better fit for Shapiro's perspective than the one he encountered at UCLA. He assumes that all queer people are androgynous, which is not the case. Some are and some aren't; the queer population is very diverse in identity and perspective. He concludes gender differences must be strengthened in order "uphold the value of heterosexuality over homosexuality"--the very pecking-order, prejudiced mentality he was complaining about when it applied to his own views.

I suggest to Mr. Shapiro that he try being in a minority group for a lifetime, rather than for just four years, and in a group that has a much higher stigma attached to it than conservatism.

5 out of 5 stars This is real.......2007-01-31

This book hits the nail on the head. Liberals have taken over universities, forcing their agenda on conservative and/or Christian kids. Don't believe me? Wisconsin universities are now prohibiting Christian students from having a Bible study in their own dorm room and on their own free time. (Steiger v. Lord-Larson). Speech codes are in place across the U.S., forcing Christian student to abandon their faith at the door or be brandished a "narrow-minded, intolerant, bigot" by officials on the basis of campus speech codes. See Sklar v. Clough. Many universities also do not allow Christian students to limit their club leadership to Christian. And on, and on, and on. This is real, folks. Don't the let the libs try to tell you its not.

The book has some impressive endorsements from Josh McDowell (guru of anything related to Christian ministry to teens) and Jack Graham (former president of the SBC), to Kay Arthur (Precept Ministries and Bible Study author extraordinaire) and Church Colson who writes the forward. So, seeing the book at one of the Battle Cry conferences, I decided to buy it and see what had everyone talking.

The book begins with something of an intended shock-effect couple of first chapters. There, through voluminous statistics, song lyrics, teen testimonials, etc., Luce points out the incredibly negative influence society is having on our teens. In fact, he shows how the media and advertisers are marketing towards them like never before, dangling everything they shouldn't have before their eyes to entice to their produces, leaving the companies wealthy and our teens emotional, physically, and spiritually sick. Luce leaves us wanting to know the answer for how to fix the problems we have seen.

Luce presents his plan in an appealing way (at least for most guys). The plan is presented as a `battle plan' with militaristic terminology and imagery. I find this appealing because the Bible often presents our spiritual conflict as a war - Matt 11:12; Rom 7:23; 2 Cor 10:3; Eph 6:10-20; 1 Tim 6:12; 2 Tim 4:7; Jas 4:1; 1 Pet 2:11. Other pastors and preachers, like John Piper, use this dramatic imagery to help illustrate and tease out the implications of such teaching for our lives (see especially his book, When I Don't Desire God: How to Fight for Joy).

Despite the appealing nature of his book's themes and organization, I noticed something disturbing as I was reading - a lack of explaining Scripture. Luce hardly ever explains what the Scripture teaches about an issue, or applies that teaching to the problems facing teens. In fact, in a book that numbers 199 pages, Luce only mentions the Bible 31 times! Again, these not explanations of the Bible teaching either, they are simply proof-texts thrown on the back of a sentence or paragraph to support what we says, as on pg 56, where he cites 6 passages to show that God's people are in a spiritual war. He doesn't try to explain the significance of those texts teaching, he simply quotes them to prove his point.

But what is most disturbing of all is that I cannot find the gospel anywhere in the book! As far as I could find, the word `gospel' is only used once. And it's not as if he talks about the gospel without using the word `gospel.' You cannot find any explanation of the Christian gospel anywhere in this book. That is, quite frankly, shocking. In a book on Christian ministry to teens, the gospel should be soaking its pages! After all, the gospel "is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Rom 1:16). Paul says that gospel is so important that "even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed" (Gal 1:8-9).

Then again, this may be the heart of the problem. Maybe Luce doesn't believe the biblical gospel? I know those are strong words to write, but consider the only way he mentions Christ's death is in an exemplary way. Because Jesus died in obedience to God's will, so should we. In fact, Luce sees the heart of Christian commitment being death to self and life for God (pp 66-67). This is not bad! What how can we do this? How is it possible to die to ourselves and our sin when our hearts are sinful and only sin comes from them (Jer 17:9; Prov 4:23)?

The Bible teaches that ...
1) Christ died as a sacrifice that appeased God's wrath against our sins (Rom 3:25);
2) This allows him to forgive our sins and remain just, having punished our sins (Rom 3:21-26);
3) What's more, when we confess our turn and turn to God with faith in Christ, we receive the righteousness of Christ that allows us to be in right relationship with God (Rom 4:1-5:1);
4) Having been united to Christ in his death and resurrection by God's Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13-14),
5) we can then follow his leading and put sin to death in our lives (Gal 5:16-25; Rom 6:1-23).

In Luce's book I see nothing of Christ's atoning death for his people's sins, nothing of Christ's righteousness for his people, nothing of the need to trust God for something we cannot do on our own, nothing of the true gospel. Luce does talk about God's forgiveness, but never of the basis of that forgiveness. It seems, if we simply say we're sorry and live like we're sorry, then God will forgive us.

This is not simply an oversight in his book, either. Having attended on the huge, stadium Battle Cry events, I saw his beliefs in action. During the `invitation' time on the first night, hundreds of teens stood and shouted `I choose the cross.' But again, Luce said nothing of Jesus dying for sins. The only time he talked about the cross, he showed it to be an example to us to die to our selves as Jesus did. Thus, choosing the cross was choosing our own cross to die upon. Though, rooted in Jesus' own teaching (Mark 8:34), it is nothing less than a distortion of the true gospel.

In the end, I can only believe that Luce is not leading teens to a true knowledge of Christ, but instead is a false teacher who comes in sheep's clothing but inwardly is a ravenous wolves (Matt 7:15). If I am wrong, then I will gladly admit it! I would love nothing less than for Luce or someone from Teen Mania to respond here or elsewhere with an affirmation of their belief in the biblical gospel and then see them preach it as Paul did (1 Cor 1:23).

I am not trying to attack Luce on a personal level. I think his heart is in the right place. But I do think he does not understand the gospel and therefore is less than Christian. I do not write that with glee or delight. Instead, I write out of a deep concern for our teens who are caught in the mire of our culture's sin. But what they need is not a call to pull themselves up by their boot straps and live better lives. What they need to hear is the powerful, life-transforming message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars eyes opened to the battle for the souls of todays teens.......2007-01-12

This book was an eye opener that motivated me to lead a intense disciple ship class called RiseUp that was also written by this author. Theres a lot of good statistics in this book and even if you don't agree with the severeity of the crisis its hard to argue that there isn't a crisis. At one point the book makes a claim that only 4% of the next generation in this country will grow up to be Christians. Even if that statistic is drastically low would it be any less important to get excited if it was 50%? That still means half of the next generation will not be saved.

For all those denouncing the tactics and actions that Ron Luce promotes. Read some of what he's written and suggest a better solution before simply dismissing his ideas as radical or over reactive.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2007-10-07

I was hesitant to buy this book cause of all the bad reviews, but i did anyway; and im glad i did. Im 19 and this book gave me a lot of inspiration and wisdom. The book is smart but it appeals directly to kids my age (and younger too.) He talks about a lot of issues that most kids feel like they cant bring up to their parents, such as drugs, sex, alchohal that kindove thing. But anyway im really happy i ignored those negative comments, and you should too if your thinking of buying the book. I notice that a lot of the ppl giving the bad reviews are doing it because they dont like Bill, because the book i read was one of the best books on the subject of teen issues. So buy this book for your kids, i promise you wont regret it!

5 out of 5 stars You can't judge a book..........2007-10-05

...by the reviews of a lot of people who have *never read it*. Like many of O'Reilly's harshest critics these "reviewers" base their analysis on third-hand opinions culled from the propaganda found on extreme left-wing websites; without looking at all to the source material. If you're the type who bases his/her understanding of current events on slogans from bumper stickers shilled at the campus bookstore then this book isn't for you.

Kids have a rough time of it, especially in school settings. It's great to see a public figure with experience in the classroom reaching out to kids with solid common-sense advice to help them navigate reality.

Thanks Bill for the A+ I got and for remembering kids and this book for us.

This man may have the most popular news show in America but that is because he appeals to simple war mongering Americans. He does his upmost to undermine the standards of the American press. Don't buy this book and if you see him near any school yards, call the police immediately!!

"Parents, teachers, students, and scholars alike will welcome this fascinating and richly diverse collection of sources and reflections pertaining to the experiences of children and childhood over the past four centuries. The challenge of reconstructing the history of American childhood will be greatly enhanced and encouraged by this collection." --Philip Greven, author of Spare the Child

"The many faces of childhood as seen through the eyes of historians, novelists, humorists, psychologists, legal scholars, and the like come alive in this remarkable collection of new and familiar writing. A treasure house of original sources that comes at a time when children finally have our attention, and a very important contribution to understanding and safeguarding our future and theirs. Highly recommended." --Judith Wallerstein, Ph.D., author of The Good Marriage: How & Why Love Lasts

"Childhood in America undertakes a significant and timely task: it documents how radically concepts of childhood have changed over the course of history. By bringing us the voices of parents, "experts" and the young from the 17th century to the present, this book helps us to confront the problems of our own era free of mistaken assumptions about childhood in past times." --Arlene Skolnick, author of Embattled Paradise: The American Family in an Age of Uncertainty

"At a time when children increasingly enter our thinking about everything from sexuality and rights of privacy to social welfare and commercialization, we need perspective on childhood in all its guises. This anthology, so wide-ranging and full of surprises, gives us that insight and understanding." --Gary Cross, author of Kids' Stuff: Toys and the Changing World of American Cbildhood

Collecting a vast array of selections from past and present- from colonial ministers to Drs. Benjamin Spock and T. Berry Brazelton, from the poems of Anne Bradstreet to the writings of today's young people- Childhood in America brings to light the central issues surrounding American children. Eleven sections on childbirth through adolescence explore a cornucopia of issues, and each section has been carefully selected and introduced by the editors.

      Book Description

Who are the homeless children in America and what do we know about them? How does their being homeless affect them and society in general? What's being done to help them? What About America's Homeless Children? takes a multifaceted look at the growing, disturbing problem of children (including infants) in homeless families and abandoned and runaway children in America. The author examines the social factors that create homeless situations of children and personal and educational problems that can result from it. The health risks to this population, including unsanitary living conditions, poor nutrition, physical assault, and lack of access to health care are also explored. Author Paul G. Shane brings the problems and effects of homelessness to a personal level by presenting ethnographic case studies of individual children in urban shelters, families in a shelter program, and people who "survived" a homeless youth experience. The history of programs, both governmental and nongovernmental, and government policies for homeless youth are also examined. The book concludes with recommendations for policies and programs that can prevent homelessness for children. Human service professionals and policymakers who deal with children and families as well as those in the fields of public health, policy studies, and clinical and counseling psychology will find this book a stimulating summary of research findings and implications about this vulnerable population.

        Book Description

Suicide is a significant problem for many adolescents in Native American Indian populations. American Indian Life Skills Development Curriculum is a course for high school students and some middle school students that is designed to drastically reduce suicidal thinking and behavior.
Created in collaboration with students and community members from the Zuni Pueblo and the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, this curriculum addresses key issues in Native American Indian adolescents’ lives and teaches such life skills as communication, problem solving, depression and stress management, anger regulation, and goal setting. The course is unique in its skills-based approach. After first increasing awareness and knowledge of suicide, it then teaches students specific methods to help a peer turn away from suicidal thinking and seek help from an appropriate help-giver.
The skills-based approach of this curriculum follows well-established teaching methods to develop social skills. Teachers and peers inform students of the rationale and components of a particular skill, model and demonstrate the skill for them, and later provide feedback on individual skill performance.
