Book Description

HISTORICAL GEOLOGY: EVOLUTION OF EARTH AND LIFE THROUGH TIME teaches students basic geologic principles as well as how scientists apply these principles to unravel Earth?s history. Wicander and Monroe present a balanced overview of both the geological and biological history of Earth as a continuum of inter-related events. These events reflect the underlying principles and processes that have shaped our planet. The authors also explain the historical development of these basic principles and processes, and their importance in deciphering Earth history. Three major themes?time, evolutionary theory, and plate tectonics?are woven together throughout the book. These themes help students link essential material to enhance their understanding of historical geology.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars strong explanation of evolution.......2006-02-17

The authors give a strong explanation of biological evolution, from its earliest unicellular origins to the present. Much fossil and DNA evidence is summarised. Including recent findings in fossil digs from the 90s.

They point out that many so-called missing links are not. For relations between genera, families, orders and classes, the intermediate forms ("links") are often present in the fossil record. Amongst the cases cited are the origins of whales and sea cows.

More generally, the book has numerous instances where transitions found in fossils are explained in terms of limbs or bones developing, or suchlike, so that you can clearly see how one fossil is the evolutionary ancestor of another later fossil. As in the early fishes. Where those who developed jaws with bones were then more able to hunt other fishes; a strong evolutionary advantage. While the move onto land is shown in fossils that had fins with muscles. This allowed for propulsion above water, where the original advantage was to let the fish move around under water, in mud or vegetation.

Geology is also emphasised. Often giving rise to various ore and petroleum bodies found today. Plus plate tectonics is shown to account for the continental drifts and the breakup of Gondwanaland.

Book Description

It's been five years since the original turtle lady, old Miss Lovie Rutledge, passed away, but her legacy lives on with some special women, especially Toy and her daughter, young Little Lovie.

Toy Sooner kept her graveside vow to her beloved mentor. She left behind an abusive, dysfunctional lifestyle to become a strong single mother and aquarist at the South Carolina Aquarium. But success has taken its toll, leaving Toy fearful of change and risks.

Caretta Rutledge, Florence Prescott and Emmaline Baker have all experienced loss. This summer, with each other's friendship and support, they will try to make their dreams a reality.

The turtle season begins the day Toy rescues a sick sea turtle on the beach. When Toy brings the loggerhead to the aquarium, she begins a turtle hospital with the help of her boss, Ethan. As the summer progresses and the sea turtles take their measured steps toward healing and freedom Toy, Cara, Flo and Emmi must find their own strength to face their fears and move courageously toward their futures.

Mary Alice Monroe delivers another deeply satisfying novel written with an eye to nature and keen insights into the connections between women.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Beach Reading.......2007-08-24

Swimming Lessons is a wonderful sequel to The Beach House. It has such wonderful relationships among the characters themselves and with the loggerhead turtles and the coastal environment.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, Satisfying Sequel.......2007-05-30

This absolutely wonderful sequel to "The Beach House" brings together all the "turtle ladies" whose mission it is to rescue endangered sea turtles who lumber up onto South Carolina's beaches once a year to lay their eggs in a timeless ritual. Civilization being what it is, the nests would be destroyed, purposely or not, if this dedicated band of women (and men) were not there each year to tirelessly make sure that doesn't happen.

Like "The Beach House," this book is based on fact; Monroe herself is a self-proclaimed turtle lady. The plot revolves around the characters we met in the first book: Single mother Toy now has her degree and a job at the aquarium, which is about to get much more prestigious. Her darling little girl Lovie, named after the matriarch who passed away in the last book, is a precocious, wonderful 6-year-old, a self-proclaimed "LITTLE turtle lady." Cara and Brett, who fell in love in the last book and married, are trying hard to have a baby. Irrascible Flo is getting older and too proud to ask for help. And in this book, the menacing father of Toy's child, Darryl, suddently reappears, wanting to connect with the daughter he abandoned before her birth.

All of this makes for a quick and interesting page-turner, but the backbone of the book is the conservation of the giant turtles, and for me, that's the grabber.

"Swmming Lessons" is the perfect summertime book, whether you're at the beach (how more perfect could it get?), around a pool, or just lazing on your front porch. I urge you to grab it and gobble it up!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Followup to The Beach House.......2007-05-13

For several years, I've enjoyed the work of Mary Alice Monroe. And when I noted that Swimming Lessons was coming out, I knew I needed to catch up on my reading and start with the Beach House (the book that introduced us to the Swimming Lessons characters). As usual, the author didn't disappoint me and created a lovely book about mother/daughter relationships that I could easily relate to. But more than that, I became equally intrigued with Loggerhead Turtles. So the follow up book - Swimming Lessons, was an added bonus to keep involved with the characters. Again, wonderfully written, you form a deep attachment to the characters and get caught up with the lives of the turtles -- this time from a different perspective. I highly recommend Swimming Lessons, but also recommend you start with The Beach House.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2007-05-12

This was a wonderful sequel to the Beach House. Mary Alice Monroe does such a good job of providing an analogy between a mother and her child through her characters and with the sea turtles. It truly warms your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Receives Mary Alice Monroe's own reading.......2007-05-12

Mary Alice Monroe's SWIMMING LESSONS receives Mary Alice Monroe's own reading which spices the lively story of a mentor's influence on the next generation. Three women who have experienced loss find friendship and support together one summer as turtle season begins.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book although it is written like a textbook.......2007-08-23

I just graduated from college and am thinking of pursuing a career in Event Planning. I ordered this book to learn more about the subject only to find that it was another textbook! With that being said, it is a good book still. Some of the administrative information is pretty basic but I find the artistic design elements that are weaved throughout the text to be rather interesting. It is as good book to get acquainted with the industry, just expect it to be written like a textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-20

This book is perfect for people interested in handling the design aspect of events. It gives you breakdowns, provides ideas, discusses how you set rates, has sample forms/contracts, and even sections that question you and make you think. I was so excited while waiting for this book to arrive and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I give this book 5 stars and would absolutely encourage others interested in event design to buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars #1 resource for event planning.......2006-04-19

This book is jam-packed with practical and useful tips on adding just the right touches that take an event from being "good" to "totally outstanding". No matter the budget or type of event - there is something for everyone. I don't intend to plan any events without first consulting this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive special event decor, staging and managing.......2006-04-18

A great resource for all aspects of event management -- full of innovative ideas, creative designs for all budgets, and fasinating insider information on how it all gets accomplished. I highly recommend this book for both experienced and novice event planners and professionals.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet & Endearing ...........2007-07-06

I must be on a Southern Lit kick because I read this one in one day ~~ since it was too hot to be outside, it seems logical to sit and read a book ... which is what I did. I found this book in a rummage sale also and since I have read one of her earlier works, I've been searching for more of her titles. I found this one and didn't regret it. It is the perfect summer read!

This novel is based on a family riddled with secrets that continued to haunt them to the present. There's Mama June, there's her husband, Preston, who was befelled by a horrible stroke. There's Nan, their daughter, married to an ambitious businessman, and mom to two teenage sons. There's Morgan, the prodigal son, home from Montana where he had lived for ten years, fighting to preserve the bison there. They all come back together when Preston had a severe stroke. The story weaves between past and present, with other characters involved, like Nona, the housekeeper/cook whose family has strong and long ties with the Blakely family over the centuries. She is also a sweetgrass basket weaver. There's Kristina, the therapist who became very involved with the entire family and there's Adele, Preston's sister, who wants nothing more than to get rid of Sweetgrass and all it holds.

This book is about family relationships, love and death, and rediscovering love all over again ~~ going back into memory lane and fighting for what is important. It is an endearing book. It is sweet and sentimental. It will keep you thumbing through the pages to find out how it ends (even if it is more predictable than you expected ... but all ends well is a happy novel, right?), and it's the perfect summer read ~~ so if you're going to the beach or to the lake or even to the pool, be sure to grab a copy of this novel. It's perfect for the plane ride too ~~ so kick back with a glass of iced tea and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Lyrical Tale of Reconciliation and Redemption Set in the South.......2007-03-30

In a small southern town, a family must fight against rising taxes, encroaching developers, devastating illness and their own demons to face themselves - and each other - and find long-needed forgiveness.

Acclaimed bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe ("Skyward," "The Beach House"), an active conservationist, also weaves into her tender plot and deftly-drawn characters a gentle message about preservation. A lyrical tale of reconciliation and redemption, set against the backdrop of South Carolina's lowcountry.

4 out of 5 stars Sweetgrass.......2007-01-05

Interesting information about making sweetgrass baskets in South Carolina was beautifully woven into the storyline of this book. Anyone who visits Charleston after reading this book would look for the open-air market where the baskets are woven and sold. Excellent, easy to read low-country story in the author's style.

Excellent beach read ! This is one book you do not want to put down. Lessons learned in life, love and racism. Writer brought characters and images to life. Reading this on the beach IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, you will see why.......

This most recent edition includes an updated planetary system as well as an improved structure of the geologic time scale. It is, however, ridiculously expensive when compared to the older edition. In my opinion,I do not believe that it is worth the added cost.

5 out of 5 stars You will fly away too........2007-02-23

I think you are interested in this subject before you bought this book. Monroe is one of the pioneers in OOBE and books about it. It is well written and will hold your attention and you just might read it twice if it takes you where you want to go. I recommend this book and should be #1 in everybody's OOBE library.

5 out of 5 stars OBE without religious trappings.......2007-01-04

Very grounded and easy to understand narrative concerning sudden OBE and what its potential use for your spiritual growth can become. Good luck getting as proficient as Mr. Monroe :)

3 out of 5 stars Just plain weird!.......2006-06-25

I purchased this book because I had heard of Robert Monroe's work with binaural beats: a subject that interests me. I really wasn't prepared; however, for the strange nature of this book which takes a look at numerous "experiments" Monroe conducted on his own, personal, "out of body" experiences. While the book reads like a science fiction diary, Monroe actually believes in and lucidly describes his journeys. It's difficult to categorize this book but should interest those who have an open mind regarding the world of the bizarre.

    5 out of 5 stars A Profound Story.......2006-05-22

This is one of those books that will shift the reader's awareness. Robert Monroe was an average American businessman who spontaneously had an out of body experience. He was unbelieving and thought at first that it was just an hallucination or a dream gone astray. When he got corroboration of his presence at distant places, he decided to document these incidents, look for patterns and commonalities, and develop a technique for leaving his body at will.

This book recounts those earliest experiences, and also shares the techniques he developed. He went on to write other books, and produced many tapes, established an institute to study paranormal activity, and inspired many others to conduct research and share their own paranormal experiences.

Journeys Out of the Body is an important basic work in the field of astral travel and, more generally, the metaphysical perspective on what human beings are, well beyond their physical bodies.

Highly recommended to anyone with an open mind who seeks to learn more about human potential and realities beyond the five senses.

5 out of 5 stars The book that changed my life.......2006-02-02

I read this book many years ago. It was the first book of its kind I had ever read. I was in my 20's and opening to a new world, much larger and more interesting than I thought possible before. Like me, Robert Monroe was a skeptic about "all of this" and he was the perfect one to break the ice for me. He writes in a very concrete, technical way about very non-ordinary experience. This is probably the only reason I was able to read through the book. It is just the way I needed it to be presented at the time. The exercises at the end of the book were very interesting, and though no OBE was experienced, a lot of non-physical vibration and awareness was.

This was my introduction to how much more we are than our physical bodies. Far Journey and Ultimate Journey are must reads for those that liked this book and want to learn more, including the further conclusions of his research. If you still want more then go for it, get the "Gateway Experience" CDs, or go to The Monroe Institute like I did. I always use his Hemi-Sync CDs in my healing sessions.

This book helped catapult me into my deep studies of Chinese Energetic Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, proving the validity of the main conclusion of Robert Monroe's works --"I am more than my physical body..."

With a handsome husband, a beautiful daughter, and a lovely house to come home to every night, forty-five-year-old Annette Goode finally has it all. Heaven knows she paid her dues--from a childhood filled with abuse to a rocky start as an adult. Annette's friend Rhoda knows too, for Rhoda has been both her savior and her greatest fear. Their erratic relationship has survived some serious bumps in the road. But now that things are good, someone apparently thinks they're a little too good...

When Annette receives an anonymous--and menacing--birthday gift, it's just the beginning of a slew of hostile letters, vicious phone calls, and vile packages from a female who is obviously disguising her voice. Gaining comfort from the support of Rhoda and Rhoda's teenage daughter, Jade, Annette hopes that somehow the problem will go away. But when the threats extend to her little daughter, Annette realizes the situation is dire. And she's right, for soon her tormentor reveals exactly what she wants--and how it could destroy everything Annette has built...

3 out of 5 stars Not much to say.......2007-09-14

This book had a slow start but if you be patient it is worth it. I just couldn't believe that Annette allowed herself to be tricked by her. She allowed herself to be manipulated and deceived by one of what is supposed to be her closest friends. One thing I really disagree with is why did she allow half the stuff that happened with Jade happen. Why didn't she put that girl n her place a long time ago? Jade is a mess and Annette did nothing to help the girl at all. Maybe if she would have said something to the girl things wouldn't have gone as far as they did.

    2 out of 5 stars Ruined a good thing.......2007-09-08

This has to be the worst Mary Monroe book I have ever read. The first two books in this series were sad, funny, heartwarming and more importantly interesting. This book took three steps back and was just plain dumb. The whole premise for the book seemed like a weak attempt to keep Annette dsyfunctional.

What I couldn't believe is that any author would make her leading character so weak and pathetic. Between Jade's unbelievable attitude and Annette's blind eye to her behavior, I wished I could slap the both of them. Also, what women in her right mind would be so hateful to her husband after the man obviously didn't give her any signs that he was unfaithful. Especially, with the type of history those two had. Annette was so crazed and over the top it didn't care if she found out the truth or not.

With that being said, there were so funny parts as usual, which perhaps would make me check out another book in this series, but Ms. Monroe needs to really sit up to the plate if she excepts to continue to series.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't Trust Everyone.......2007-09-02

For some reason I knew that it was Rhonda's daughter, I don't know how I just did.

2 out of 5 stars An engaging read...at least to begin with..........2007-08-27

I really enjoyed getting into this novel, at first, having not read any of Mary Monroe's work before. The narrator Annette is very engaging, until I got sick of how easily and persistently she is walked over by her so-called friends. I am giving this book 2 stars because although it was well-written the plot-line was as thin as Annette's hair! It was sooooooooo obvious that Jade was behind the campaign of harassment and when I got to the end and had this confirmed I just felt disgusted and let-down. And on the one hand we hear over and over again how marvellous Annette's marriage is, but she only confided in her husband at the very end, and it took very little for her to accuse him of infidelity. I just found this relationship dynamic implausible. In the end it put me off reading any more of Ms Monroe's work.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible compared to the two prequel novels.......2007-08-17

Of the two prequel novels, this was by far the worst. The story line was too predictible and even a small child could figure out who the black mailer was long before it was revealed. Although i found this book to be awful, it is a must have if you read the previous two books and became hooked on Annete, Rhoda and the rest of the crew. The redeeming qulaity is that you get to see how their lives turned out and that you really do reap what you sow.

    Book Description

Anytime, anyplace, Ethan Crane's your man. An agent's agent, he's tough, smart, and fearless. Exactly the guy you want when the stuff hits the fan--and precisely the kind Beth Whitney avoids like the plague. It took a fiancé (make that ex-fiancé) in the business to teach her, but she's learned her lesson: Don't. Date. Agents. Ever. It's this little rule that's kept her gainfully employed at the agency, doing her part for world security from behind a desk. So when a case throws the two together, Beth's determined to keep it strictly professional. So far, so good--except for the steamy kisses, the red-hot phone sex, and...What was that rule again?

To Ethan, Beth couldn't be less his type if her father ran the agency, which, oh yeah, her father does run the agency. Still he can't help but be impressed by her inspired work in the field--a total turn on. Off the field it's even better. Seems the old adage that opposites attract happens to agents too. Even if Beth insists it's just a fantasy. But hot pursuit of a notorious information broker is what they should focus on--not each other. That can wait until they've accomplished a job well done. Or can it?

1 out of 5 stars Very Very Disappointed...............2007-09-27

I was really looking forward to this book, because the second one of this set was a let down and I didn't actually finish reading that one either. I should have just went with that instinct. I don't know if Ms. Monroe was being paid by the word or what. But the internal dialogue of the characters would just go on and on. I became so fustrated, I began not to care. I saw that she has a new book coming out, I don't know if I shall even buy that one. What started out with some promise has fizzled terribly.

4 out of 5 stars good, but not up to her standards.......2007-07-04

first off let me say i love lucy monroe's writing and if you haven't read "ready, willing, and able" go read them as soon as possible. satisfaction guaranteed was good, but not really up to her standards of writing. at some points in the book i found myself skimming trying to find an exciting, edge of your seat part, but i'm sorry to say i never really found any such section.the sex scenes were nice and i liked most of the plot,i just felt like it could have been better. the book's potential to be really enjoyable is there just not quite fulfilled.i don't regret reading the book and if any of you are huge fans of her i don't believe you'll regret reading it either, but if you're new to her don't stop here because all her other work is AMAZING.

    5 out of 5 stars 007 James Bond Romance!.......2007-06-09

I enjoyed this book! It picks up from Ready, Willing and Able (triology set) as some of the characters reenter this book, but not in a big way. I thought the book was well written, moves right along, doesn't require a lot of concentration to keep up with (I LIKE THAT!), has some steam. Both characters are likeable. I thought it was going to be about "agents" like movie stars that sort of thing. It's about "agents" like 007/FBI type stuff. FYI It was a good read!

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't deliver what its title promises.......2007-06-04

After being left at the altar, Beth Whitney makes herself a promise. No more dating agents. Her fiance, an FBI agent, missed their wedding because he was involved in a case. Beth promises herself that she will never again allow herself to fall in love with a man who will put his occupation before his relationship with her. As the daughter of an intelligence agent, Beth knows what it's like to grow up in a family where she feels second best because of her father's dedication to his job. Beth wants more for herself and for any family she might have in the future.

Beth decides to completely change her life after her failed wedding and leaves her job as an investment analyst to work for her father at a covert intelligence agency known as The Goddard Project. She finds her administrative work there fulfilling, and it allows her to show another part of her personality that is interested in the intrigue and mystery of life as an agency without the dangers. She is also allowed to meet strong, sexy agents like Ethan Crane. Ethan is everything that Beth is not looking for in a man, but she finds herself attracted to his hard body, charming personality, and charismatic demeanor.

When a project forces she and Ethan to be paired as agents, Beth and Ethan must work in such close proximity that she is forced to deal with her attraction to him. To her amazement, Ethan also seems to be interested in her. When they being preparing to work on the case, living together and working together raise the level of intimacy until Ethan and Beth wind up as lovers as well as coworkers.

Satisfaction Guaranteed was okay, but not great. The story dragged at points, and I actually put it down for a week while I read other things. Beth's personality seems to change depending on her situation throughout the novel. At times she's a take charge woman, confident in her abilities and what she wants for her future. At others she's insecure, unsure of what she wants, and willing to sacrifice love for the image of what she thought she wanted but knows isn't what she needed. It was difficult to respect her since she couldn't manage to make up her own mind, which made me have hard time making up mine.

Also, I was unconvinced that the author had done enough research as far as the intelligence agencies were concerned. I didn't understand what sort of "agents" were being discussed at the beginning of the book, and got the impression that someone had watched a few too many episodes of Alias and Passions (Ethan Crane, anyone?) rather than doing the necessary research to write a book about espionage. As a whole, Satisfaction Guaranteed was unable to deliver what its title promised.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Romance Junkies:.......2007-05-29

Beth Whitney wishes she could wake up from the peculiar dream she's having about work. She's the Central Administration Agent for a secret government agency called The Goddard Project. Her father heads the agency, and he's just hired a new agent: Alan Hyatt, the man who left Beth at the altar three years earlier. Was a little warning too much to expect? To make things even more uncomfortable, one of their top agents, Ethan Crane, has just returned from his latest mission. He just happens to be the star of Beth's most secret fantasies. Under her father's watchful eye, Beth needs to deal with both men at the same time. Come to think of it, the situation is more like a nightmare.

Things get even more bizarre for Beth when her father asks her to work as a field agent on an important case. Sure, Beth trained in the basics as an agent, but she never expected or even wanted to work anywhere but the office. And naturally Ethan Crane is the agent in charge. He'll be posing as Beth's jealous, possessive boyfriend. If she agrees to the assignment, Beth will need to get herself hired as a personal investment counselor to a man the agency is trying to take down. She has the financial experience and bookish personality to handle the job, but her relationship with Ethan will have to be absolutely convincing at all times. Intellectually, Beth knows it will all be pretense for the sake of the case, but it won't be easy to keep her emotions out of the picture.

Ethan Crane thrives on danger. The strikingly gorgeous, capable agent chooses the riskiest assignments at work, and extreme sports are his preferred form of relaxation. Ethan has never been in a relationship that lasted more than a couple of months and he likes it that way. Although he doesn't live near his family in Texas anymore, they're still an important part of his life. Ethan would love to learn more about the serious, quietly attractive Beth, but he plans to be cautious. She's the boss's daughter, after all. Ethan is intrigued by the unexpected facets of Beth's personality that emerge once she's away from the office. He's also strangely threatened by newly-hired agent Alan Hyatt's mysterious relationship with Beth.

When Beth agrees to the field assignment, Ethan doesn't want to waste any time learning everything he can about her. The more they know about each other, the better their cover and the greater chance their mission will succeed. Is Ethan only interested in Beth for the sake of the case? She guards her heart closely, and never plans to offer it to an agent again. Will Ethan break through her defenses?

As always, Lucy Monroe gets everything right. Who can resist page after page of smoldering, seductive heat as Ethan brings Beth's deepest fantasies to life in vivid detail? Beth may seem shy and quiet on the outside, but her conservative, professional demeanor is merely one facet of her complex personality. She's introspective, a dreamer, and her failed relationship with Alan has left her wary of truly living. Beth is so different from her parents, it's sometimes hard to believe she's actually part of the same family. She wants children and a husband who will put his family first, something she's sure can never happen with a man like Ethan. He's devoted to his job, and doesn't do relationships. Ethan is exactly wrong for Beth, and they both know it. But the sensual, erotic side of Beth drives Ethan wild with desire. He admires her quick mind, her work ethic, and even her yearning for a family. I hoped Ethan and Beth wouldn't simply walk away from each other when their mission was complete. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED definitely lives up to its title!
