I shall agree that the illustrations are great. However, the book contains very limited information about the wonders or their history. If you like to look at the pictures along this book is for you, but if you like to read about the Ancient wonders you need to look somewhere else. There are many books that cover this subject in a lot more details.

5 out of 5 stars "WONDER"ful!.......2003-12-14

We checked this book out at the public library over 2 years ago... my husband and I stayed up one night after the kids went to bed and we spent over an hour reading and looking at the beautiful and fascinating illustrations. I am so glad that I found this book today... I have thought of it many times, but had forgotten the title. I can't wait to read and re-read it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Buy This Book! It's Outstanding.......2001-12-15

This book can only be described with the use of the most superlative terms only. What a wonderful foundation book to fill any child with awe at the beauty and variety of man-made wonders in the world. The illustration, photographs and texts are thrilling! Two pages toward the end of the book show Natural Wonders, and I can't wait to see more of these. Buy this book.

Mathew Reilly's 7 Deadly Wonders is a lot of things--fast-paced, clever, action-packed. But mostly it's perfect for a Jerry Bruckheimer treatment. The novel reads like a screenplay meets video game with one harrowing chase after another.

The breakneck action stems from an Egyptian sun cult which has hidden pieces of the capstone to the great pyramid in the husks of the seven wonders of ancient world, leaving clues that would flummox Indiana Jones. Here's the deal: whichever nation can locate and assemble the capstone in time for a cosmic event designed to end life on Earth will rule the world. Enter a ragtag team of commandos representing non-superpowers (read, in a Da Vinci Code context, not the European Union, the United States or the Vatican) who stand to lose in this eventuality. The team pits itself in a race against the formidable forces of the western world, cosmic calendar, and traps set by ancient-wonder-hider, Imhotep V. Complete with Mario-Brothers-style drawings, the book lurches from one great escape/victory/defeat until its final climax atop Cheops' Pyramid. It's a thrilling ride, perfect to enliven a lazy vacation or long plane ride. The real question is: Brad Pitt or Matthew McConaughey?--Jeremy Pugh

Matthew Reilly, the New York Times bestselling author and "pedal-to-the-metal action novelist" (Publishers Weekly), is back in high gear on the greatest treasure hunt of all time -- a headlong race to find the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great action packed book.......2007-10-15

I absolutley loved this book. It was fast paced and exciting. I loved the descriptions of the seven ancient wonders. It is one you can't take very seriously, but I mean that in a good way. It has a Indiana Jones type quality that is non-stop action. It is the perfect read when you want to get away from the real world and read something that is engrossing but you don't have to think to hard to enjoy it. I cannot wait for his next book.

2 out of 5 stars Buyer's Remorse.......2007-09-13

I really could have found a better use for the eight bucks I spent on this book. I've read four of Reilly's books and have become a big fan. If I were new to his work and started with this one, I would never get around to the others. I'm about a hundred pages into it, and so far haven't seen much in the way of character development. It's hard to care about a character you don't know. Normally, I'd be rooting for someone by this point. Yes, there's a lot of action; in fact, too much action -- no time for the suspense to build up before the bullets or grenades or lava is flying again and the characters are somehow managing to avoid it all. And yes, there are way too many exclamation points. It's supposed to be exciting. I get it.
My advice for Reilly fans is to skip this one and hope his next novel is better.

2 out of 5 stars Worth avoiding.......2007-09-06

Sometime ago I read Ice Station by the same author. While it was definitely outrageous, it was still fun and inventive. This book is really neither. I don't think there is an idea in the book that isn't ripped off from somewhere else. Badly drawn diagrams of the various locations supplement the bad prose.

The traps and the ways the team figure out to evade them is sort of like reading a narrative of someone playing a videogame. Activate the disable bullets gadget, jump left, dodge the oil, hit the "Call Falcon" button, jump over the crocodile, snatch the little girl before she's scalded by hot lava, and so on. Since none of the characters have any depth and the story itself is silly, reading this book quickly becomes a chore.

4 out of 5 stars 7 Deadly Wonders.......2007-08-31

For the science fiction and/or thriller fan who likes lots of action and impossible situations, this is a definite must read. A group of heroic agents from several small nations working together to either save the world keep things moving as they try to retrieve as many of the 7 deadly wonders as possible.

Buried in the annals of time, pieces of the capstone of the great pyramid have been divided up among what was then wonders of the ancient world. The pieces are needed to prevent a worldwide catastrophe, but the holder of them will also have power over the world for a thousand years. Jack West and his band of representatives from the small nations want to prevent the wrong people seizing power.

Join Jack and his group of eight as they face death and dangers you can't imagine in their search for the treasures. There are at least two other groups seeking these same pieces and Jack fears he may have a mole in his group.

Frustration and disappointment seem to dog the little band's footsteps, but they persever. A recommended read for any reader who likes high tension and a sense of almost constant movement in their reading. Talented Matthew Reilly takes you on a tour of the ancient world and reminds us of the things we've lost to wars and conquest.

Enjoy. I did.

1 out of 5 stars Frustration? You're kidding me........2007-08-27

Reading so much about frustration after reading the book makes me laugh.
I had to *translate* this lame excuse for a book.
Even more hair raising is the prospect that it is very likely that I will have to translate his next "The Six Sacred Stones" (an after that probably "The Five Manuscripts of Evil", "The Four Satan Damnations", "The Hellish Threesome", "Two from Inferno" and "The One").
So stop complaining, you know nothing :)

Book Description

Now they exist only within the precise, rectangular pits of excavated remains that capture a once-powerful dream whose images continue to echo around us. But, centuries ago, the Seven Wonders of the World were advertisements for a contemporary, thrilling, and heroic way of life, the finest examples of a brand-new civic architecture, the ancestors of every modern city on the planet. Here is the history behind these legendary lost structures: the enormous statue to the Greek god Zeus, carved by Phidias and holding a figure of Victory in one hand and a scepter in the other; the Colossus of Rhodes, a tribute to freedom looking up to Olympus and over the sea; the elegant lighthouse on the island of Pharos in Alexandria; the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, adorned with numerous statues and carvings; the many-tiered Hanging Gardens of Babylon; the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, as beautiful as the goddess for whom it was named; and the eternal Pyramids and the Rise of Wonder.

5 out of 5 stars A good book and better film.......2005-05-07

This is one of Mr. Romers better efforts both as a book and as a video. He takes you places where most folks will never be able to go to. He then takes what you think is nothing and shows you how it is really connected physically to the Hellenistic Era. He has opened my eyes to an era that I had not really thought important but I now see the errors of my ways. His choices of music, locations and his train of thought used in the film are outstanding. I just hope that it comes out in DVD soon. All together a mighty effort that pays off handsomely, Mega Kudos to all hands involved!

    I love it!
The combination of fun mazes and interesting text is unique, exciting, fun, entertaining.
My 6 year old daughter immediately tried out the mazes. (And I did too!)
    Excellent for children and grown-ups!

5 out of 5 stars Good book for maze enthusiasts.......2002-04-04

This book is both unusual and perfectly suited for maze enthusiasts. There's nothing quite like it! It would make a perfect present for the right person.

5 out of 5 stars Amazeingly novel book!.......2001-12-08

This book is incredibly original and inspirational. The author's enthusiasm for beautiful mazes is highly contagious. Anyone who likes cool ideas and puzzles (or just want to know the difference between a labyrinth and a maze) should take a look at this book.

5 out of 5 stars Art, history, and wonder.......2001-10-20

Amazeing Art combines graphic art portraits of about 30 architectural marvels of the ancient world with vivid, detailed accounts of their histories. And each masterful drawing is, unbelievably, a maze. There is a lot of text in the book, written with an infectious passion for the mysteries of the buildings and sculptures drawn beside them. It's hard not to get hooked and develop a sense of awe at the achievements of these old civilizations.

The book is properly titled "Amazeing Art," not "Artistic Mazes." The ingenuity of the drawings rivals pen-and-ink artists like M.C. Escher, so the book is not just for maze-doers. It's for parents who enjoy some intelligent, diversionary reading--and for their children old enough to tackle challenging mazes. (In many families, it's the kids who will read and the adults who will play.) It's educational for both, with pictures and histories of the Sphinx, a Phoenician ship, the Tower of Babylon, the Parthenon, the Colossus of Rhodes, and many other masterpieces from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Greece, and Rome, including the treasures of the Hittites, the Trojans, the Ephesians, and other peoples. There's a lot to learn here, and the learning is great fun--if you can take your eyes of the drawings.

5 out of 5 stars A tasty mix of mazes, labyrinths, and ancient mysteries.......2001-10-15

This book is fun and different! The mazes were beautiful and tricky, and hard to do (I couldn't solve them all). The stories that went with them were filled with all kinds of fascinating tales and little known secrets about ancient civilizations. Especially the story of the Egyptian Labyrinth, which was a long-lost architectural wonder that ancient historians said was more impressive than the Pyramids. Super interesting!

The seven wonders of the ancient world have long been hotly debated, from the question of which great works comprise the seven, to whether some of them even existed. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World brings together several lively, detailed and engrossing discussions by noted authorities on each of the famed seven wonders.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Competent Presentation of the Seven Ancient Wonders.......2004-09-13

Clayton's "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" as a compilation of seven essays by classics scholars describing variously the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Pharos at Alexandria, the Mausoleum, the Temple of Artemis and the Statue of Zeus. Although the illustrations are wonderful and the essays very thorough, they vary in terms of driness - some very witty and some less so. Nevertheless each of them seems to get all their facts right, and there is always an interesting follow-up to explain the present fate of each "wonder".

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Ever!.......2003-05-02

The Seven Wonders of The Ancient World is one of the most complete and illustrative books that I have ever read on the subject. Even the 1990 reprint, going on 13 years without a revision, is still accurate. Each chapter explains in detail one of these seven ancient monuments, starting with it's history, location, purpose, construction and description; and ending in a vivid account on how they came to be no more or the way the sites still stand today. The images included within the text also show us, besides conceptual pictures of the monuments through the ages, a glimpse of the way that archaeology reconstructed the pieces to the puzzling appearance of some of these monuments and the way archaeologists interpreted ancient accounts of people that lived to see these wonders in their heyday. The book also contains two chapters in which the authors describe other lists of ancient wonders and the way those lists that we know today came to be created. The task of the authors in putting together in one book all the information of these seven wonders is a remarkable work of scholarship, mostly given to the fact that six of these seven monuments no longer exist and the great number of different accounts that survived to our day instead. This is a must-read book for all of those interested in archaeology, history or ancient civilizations.

5 out of 5 stars Fun bit of history.......2002-06-10

This book should enjoy wide appeal, and particularly interest the armchair archaeologist lurking in all of us. Everyone has heard that there are 7 wonders of the world, although fewer know what they were and fewer know anything about them. This book is a great starting point to jump into the subject, combining the few documents describing the wonders with commentary, modern archaeological evidence, illustrations, and even some speculation. A very good introduction for someone with a sense of wonder, the love of travel, and a fascination with the past.

5 out of 5 stars great reading in history.......2001-04-28

The chapters in this book describe the seven wonders of the ancient world - the Great Pyramids at Giza, the Hanging Gardens at Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesos, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Pharos (Lighthouse) at Alexandria. Their history, location, purpose, building and description are provided along with many illustrations and drawings. The last chapter gives a list of other monuments which could be considered wonders, and tells why the actual seven wonders of the ancient world were chosen. Recommended reading for all interested in history.

4 out of 5 stars Quick, What Was Number Four?.......2000-12-18

This is a series of entertaining and erudite essays, one for each of the classical seven wonders, as well as a discussion of some wonders which didn't make the list, or didn't make the final cut. While some remains of the other six wonders have been recovered in recent centuries, as everyone must know the Great Pyramid is the only one which survives. Curiously, Herodotus wondered at the city of Babylon, and of the wonders he saw in Egypt named the Middle Kingdom complex near Faiyum.

This is a nice book for ancient history lovers and students. See also "The Seventy Wonders of the Ancient World: The Great Monuments and How They Were Built" ed. by Christopher Scarre

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Colossus of Rhodes. The Great Pyra-mid at Giza. For centuries these names have inspired wonder and mystery. They are but three of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Most of these masterpieces of human achievement have long since crumbled into dust. But their legacy survives, and these triumphs of human vision, architecture, and creativity have become the stuff of legends.

In the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Lynn Curlee ponders the questions that have fascinated researchers and archaeologists for decades: What purpose did these structures have for the societies that built them? How did they achieve the means necessary to construct such intricate and innovative temples and statues? Mr. Curlee investigates and illustrates how these Seven Wonders must have appeared at their peak.

With extraordinary paintings and a moving narrative, Mr. Curlee tells the story of some of man?s greatest feats and explores the timeless desire of cultures to leave a permanent mark on the Earth.

The Seven Ancient Wonders of the World were built during a period that spanned more than two thousand years. Their size, design, and craftsmanship were without equal in the ancient world. And their legendary grandeur remains with us to this day. Of the seven, only one is still standing. However, drawing upon historical descriptions, Celia King has reconstructed all of them in miniature splendor. Brief historical descriptions are accompanied by magnificent collage illustrations that literally leap from the page and evoke the richness of a long-lost time. This is a jewel-like treasure that readers of every age will turn to again and again.
