Holidays Explained .......2007-05-07
I teach First Grade and I find the Rookie Read-About Holidays series to be a good starter for a lesson. The holiday is explained in a simple way and can lead into a Social Studies or multicultural lesson. I used the Cinco De Mayo book this past Friday. I have about 8 books and I highly recommend them.
I love Rookie Readers! .......2006-05-02
Another great Rookie Reader! These books are great for ESOL students of all ages who read at a beginning level. This book provides a very clear idea of how Cinco de Mayo is celebrated.
Mexico.......2004-06-16
This is a great teaching source for young children learning about Mexico.

It's Cinco de Mayo! Everyone is celebrating the holiday in their own way. "Mama marches in the parade. Papa plays in a mariachi band. Abuelita cooks a special meal." Why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
A very simple history of the holiday is interspersed with the story of a young boy celebrating Cinco de Mayo with his family.
This bilingual book features a section with "find what's missing" pictures and simple crafts perfect for any child's Cinco de Mayo celebration. Loretta Lopez's engaging and cheerful pictures complement Janice Levy's child-friendly introduction to this important Mexican holiday.

Book Description
MAYDAY!
When Christine Bennett is invited on a sightseeing trip to Arizona, she jumps at the chance for a little adventure. But the excursion reminds her of a former high school classmate, Heinz Gruner, who died twenty years earlier on Cinco de Mayo while hiking Picacho Peak near Tucson. Chris decides to contact Heinz’s mother, who has been wondering all these years how her beloved son, an experienced hiker, plunged to his death. Her one wish is to find out the truth–whether it was an accident, as the police report claimed, or murder.
So Chris begins sleuthing–tracking down anyone and everyone connected to her old classmate. Determined to unravel a mystery, if there is indeed one to unravel, Chris will stop at nothing to uncover the dire secrets that exist about that fateful day in May.
Customer Reviews:
Like Cotton Candy.......2007-02-04
I have really liked this series and always feel connected to the characters and the plot, until this one! It's like cotton candy: looks good, smells good, but when you are finished with it - what did you have? A rather unstatisfied taste in your mouth. I was so disappointed in Cinqo de Mayo Murder. It made no sense at all. The plot was non-existant, the characterizations weak, there was no back story (always of interest to those of us that read series) and the conclusion was made of air, just like cotton candy. Come on, Ms Harris, you can do so much better. I'll try the next in the series and if it is as flawed as this one, then I am done with Chris et al.
Put It To Bed.......2007-01-18
I had high hopes for this installment with Christine being on the road and involved in a murder mystery -- but when she'd already returned home from her trip by page 60, I knew I was in trouble. The rest of the story couldn't have been more boring, as it mainly consisted of Chris sitting at home calling a bunch of strangers over and over, with an occasional face to face meeting with someone locally. She doesn't even solve the murder -- the answer just falls into her lap.
Once again, it made no sense whatsoever that Chris would be involved in this. She takes a trip to Arizona, which prompts her to think about a classmate (who wasn't even a friend) who died out there 20 years ago, which prompts her to befriend the kid's mother out of nowhere and insinuate herself into her life and solving the old case. It gets even more ridiculous when her husband the cop encourages and assists his civilian wife in solving a case that has absolutely nothing to do with her.
People just give Chris information, having no idea who she is. When she has a falling out with the classmate's mother, the lady's doctor calls Chris, basically a total stranger not only to him but to the lady herself, to "mediate the dispute." He then, as her will's executor, takes Chris with him to view the lady's safety deposit box and gives her things to Chris. The whole thing was so far out there that it was almost laughable.
I like Lee Harris, so it's a shame to see her drag this series out way past its time, especially when she has a good thing going with the Jane Bauer series. This series should've been retired awhile ago, and it's painful to see it go on and just keep going further and further down the toilet.
Accident or Murder?.......2006-10-31
christine Bennett accompanies her former Mother Superior to Arizona for a mini vacation. Christine remembers a high school classmate who was killed in Arizona hiking. She visits his elderly mother and decides to help with closure by investigating the "accident" or suicide. She and Mother Joseph find clues to the 20 year old mystery that points toward murder. That's all Christine needs to begin digging to find the murderer. The Christine Bennett mysteries are a delight to read and this one is one of the best. It's too bad that it appears to be the last in the series, as her publisher has dropped mysteries. This is according to a blog. I'm hoping it isn't true. I will miss this enterprising amatuer slueth.

Book Description
Under the orders of French Emperor Napoleon III, French troops arrive in Mexico in 1861 with a dual purpose: to help the Confederacy win the war against the United States and to conquer Mexico. As President Benito Juárez suspends payment of Mexico's foreign debts, the French drop their façade of debt negotiations and head for Puebla, where they are soundly defeated in their attempt to capture the city. The French withdraw from their stunning setback and spend the summer of 1862 nursing their wounds and awaiting reinforcements in Orizaba. This gives the Mexicans ample time to highly fortify Puebla against a future attack. During spring of 1863 French troops head for Puebla and Mexico City in what they hope will be a pair of easy victories. Juárez and his government flee Mexico City rather than trying to defend the capital against overwhelming odds. The French make their grand entrance and immediately encounter problems with the Catholic Church. Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, asked by the French to become emperor of Mexico, will not accept the throne without a "popular" vote from the people. When the American Civil War ends in 1865, out-of-work soldiers, generals and high-ranking officials from the former Confederate government drift into Mexico. General Ulysses S. Grant's U.S. Army is now free to stage maneuvers along the border, setting off panic in Mexico City and Paris. Grant's move prompts Napoleon III to cut his losses and pull his troops out. Now, it's only a matter of time before Mexican forces retake the country.

Cinco de Mayo chronicles the war between Mexico and France in plain terms, accessible to readers of all backgrounds.......2007-06-04
Award-winning radio journalist Donald W. Miles presents Cinco de Mayo: What Is Everybody Celebrating?, a historical account of the events that sparked the annual Cinco de Mayo holiday in Mexico. Nearly 150 years ago, when the emperor of France ordered his generals to take over Mexico and use it as a "base" to help the Confederates in the American Civil War against the Union Army, Mexico fought back. On May 5th, 1862, Mexico won a decisive battle against French forces, preserving its independence and preventing foreign interference in the American Civil War, yet it would take Mexico another five years to expel the last of the French soldiers from its borders. Cinco de Mayo chronicles the war between Mexico and France in plain terms, accessible to readers of all backgrounds; notes and an index round out this excellent historical primer especially recommended for public library collections.
Excellent portrayal of events.......2007-04-23
Reviewed by Leslie Granier for Reader Views (4/07)
I must admit I had no clue what the celebrations for Cinco de Mayo (May 5) were all about before I read this book. Miles provided an insightful and intuitive book that concentrated mainly on the French and Mexican forces. He also effectively included the ways in which the Civil War that was simultaneously occurring in the United States affected the events of the war in Mexico. It truly made me wonder how history might have turned out differently if the United States had been able to intervene more on Mexico's behalf.
Interestingly, the accounts of this war from France's point of view are similar to what many believe is occurring today in Iraq. As stated on page 81, "the government was concealing the real purposes for going to war, the invading army was led to believe they would be welcomed as liberators" and "there was no plan to deal with the responsibilities after a military victory." He also effectively showed how the U. S. Civil War influenced the war in Mexico."
I appreciated the inclusion of an epilogue that told what happened to many of the major players after the war ended. I enjoy finding out about people's fate after their roles in historical events are lessened with time. For me it provides an end to what would otherwise seem to be an unfinished story.
I think it would be interesting to see this same chain of events written from the French army's point of view for comparison. For me it provided an understanding that there were health issues and food issues involved but I would think the army of a world power would have been more prepared and more successful, especially since other nations did not offer help to the Mexican armed forces.
"Cinco de Mayo" is a comprehensive account of the war between Mexico and France and the role played by the United States. Through the use of vivid descriptions at times I felt I could picture the scenes and see the carnage. This book is an excellent portrayal of the events of May 5, offering immense insight into what happened both before and during the fighting. While not the turning point of the war, the Battle of Puebla inspired the Mexican forces to persevere and accomplish their mission."
Very readable.......2007-02-09
... very readable ... story on the French intervention in Mexico ... great usefulness to readers who want to want to know how ... Cinco de Mayo fits into the ... struggle to keep Mexico from becoming a European colony. [Don Miles] brings out many human and colorful aspects ... often lost in traditionally technical histories. His intimate knowledge of the Mexican culture is reflected in all that he writes.
