Customer Reviews:
My first recipe out of this book was a total disaster........2007-09-23
I bought this book as a gift for my mother in law, who had the first and loved it. I thought I would try the "Cheesecake Factory Raspberry White Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake" out of it for a party. The recipe seemed a little different as I was making it. For example, usually when making a cheesecake you don't add the eggs all together, as it will curdle the mixture.
After I baked this cheesecake (for longer than specified, as it was obviously not done at his appointed time), it looked fine, although it was excreting a strange greasy substance from the bottom of the pan. But after I chilled it and removed the sides of the pan, it was still a very raw egg mixture.
I tried to bake it some more, but the cake refuses to bake. I have made successful cheesecakes before, and this recipe clearly is flawed and wasted a lot of money. Needless to say, I will be wary of any more of his recipes and I would say that if one of these recipes seems strange to you, you should probably change it if you would like a successful product.
GREAT RECIPES.......2007-09-12
This recipe book has some of the best restaurant recipes and they actually come out close to the actual restaurant's! :)

Famous recipes.......2007-08-27
Well, it's an ok book. I would liked to have read the index before I bought it, I probably would have looked for another book if I had.
Surprisingly good clones.......2007-06-27
Have not tried all recipes in this book but the ones I have tried my family has really enjoyed. For the restuarants that we frequent versus the clone recipes in the book they are surprisingly close!

Book Description
Can you really lose twenty pounds in a month? Will you really keep it off this time? With The Rice Diet Solution, you will! The Rice Diet Program has been helping dieters successfully lose weight since 1939. Now in book form, this world-renowned weight-loss method can help you change the way you eat forever.
The Rice Diet Program in Durham, North Carolina, was one of the first medical facilities in America to use diet as the primary way to treat disease. On this high-complex-carb, low-fat, and low-sodium whole-foods diet, "Ricers" lose weight faster, more safely, and more effectively than people on any other diet. Men lose on average twenty-eight to thirty pounds and women on average nineteen to twenty pounds per month! The Rice Diet also detoxes your body, ridding it of excess water weight and toxins from processed foods and the environment. The program's results have been documented by extensive studies and confirmed by thousands of people who report amazing weight loss, as well as immediate improve-ment in such conditions as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. After all the other diets out there have failed them, people find that the Rice Diet is the one that finally works -- for good.
Here's how it works: The Rice Diet strictly limits salt and sodium-rich ingredients. Salt, like refined sugar, is an appetite stimulant, so when you reduce salt intake, you lose water weight and are less inclined to overeat. The Rice Diet also limits saturated fats and instead relies on carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans) as the main source of nutrition. The fiber cleanses your system and satisfies you so you feel full quickly. The Rice Diet makes it easy to limit calories; when you're eating foods that truly satisfy your hunger, it's a challenge to eat 1,500 calories per day!
To make it easy to follow the program, The Rice Diet Solution includes hundreds of tasty, filling, easy-to-prepare recipes -- some from the Rice House kitchen, others inspired by major chefs and adapted to Rice Diet standards.
The Rice Diet is not just an eating plan. It's a physical, emotional, and spiritual program that will change the way you live, giving you new vitality, energy, and longevity. Ricers report that the Rice Diet not only helps them solve weight problems they've struggled with their whole lives but also teaches them a whole new way of healthier, more mindful living.
Whether you want to lose twenty pounds or two hundred, the Rice Diet can help you do it -- finally and forever.

"It's not what's in the rice, it's what's not in the rice".......2007-08-26
Maddening.
Take some great weight loss ideas, framed with good science. Add a dash of pop "detox" tripe. Go into a long lecture about gummy bears. Then toss in some intriguing but complicated recipes. You end up with The Rice Diet Solution: The World-Famous Low-Sodium, Good-Carb, Detox Diet for Quick and Lasting Weight Loss, by Kitty and Robert Rosati, a registered dietitian and a physician, respectively.
This is a low-sodium, low-fat diet plan, that includes less red meat, more fruits and vegetables, more complex carbs, exercise, maintenance follow-ups, and stress reducing exercises. The first week results in low calorie consumption, less than 1500 calories a day. Between exercise and this 1500 cal/day diet, you WILL lose weight, guaranteed.
Founder Walter Kemper found "...it was almost impossible for [his patients] not to lose weight following the diet [of rice and fruit]" (p. 9). BTW, this is the reason it is called the "Rice Diet" as opposed to the Duke Diet, the Kemper Diet, or the Rosati Diet. He also said, "It's not what's in the rice, it's what's not in the rice."
So how does the Rice Diet work? There are three steps:
1. Diet in the following manner:
a. 1 week of grains, fruits, and veggies. This is the detox period, with 1000-1200 calories/day.
b. keep the same diet, but add some non-fat dairy, and you get animal protein once a week.
c. Maintenance while you add more foods.
2. Be a mindful eater. Pay attention to what you put in your mouth, and how you cook.
3. Find supportive people or groups, and surround yourself with them.
I'm irritated by the discussion of "detoxing." They note, "The overall goal of Phase One is to cleanse and detox your body's system of excess water weight... excess sodium, [and] allergic-like symptoms from a range of potential offenders from our food supply (e.g., pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotic and growth hormone does animal products, and others" (p. 31). In addition, "How does the Rice Diet detox the body?... This is probably an impossible aspect to actually quantify or prove but many signs of detoxification occur" (p. 58). Let me repeat that, "This is probably an impossible aspect to actually quantify or prove..." Then why is this coming from a physician and a RD?
Still, except for this "pop-nutrition", everything makes sense. Eat less meat, more fruits and veggies, more whole grains, less sugar, low-fat, high fiber, and exercise.
The book has more. It includes recipes and product suggestions. Some of these product suggestions seem way too specific: Yogurt? "Stonyfield Farm is best" (p. 49). For bread, try "Galliee Splendor Bible Bread" (p. 44).
I did try a recipe last night. The Bouillabaisse recipe on page 250 caught my attention. I couldn't get my hands on any fresh fennel, and I thought 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of saffron was a bit much (have you seen the price of this spice?). I used fresh bay leaves instead of dried, I chopped the garlic cloves (the recipe didn't specify), and given that I didn't have 2 1/2 cups of "hot fish stock" on hand, I used an 8 oz bottle of clam juice and another 12 oz of water (this also dilutes the salt in the clam juice). I mixed and matched my seafood with what was available... a pound of size 31-40 shrimp, a pound of Alaska salmon, a half pound of tilapia, a can of packed crab (no salt), and 8 oz of fresh mushrooms.
It was delicious. I served it on hot rice, in honor of the Rice Diet. MIne served 6, not 10.
Most of the recipes seemed fairly complicated. They definitely are not fast food. They are also a bit pricey, not an impossible situation, but one to be aware of.
But the Bouillabaisse was so delicious!
So the Rice Diet didn't seem to have any fatal flaws. It had a few pop-nutrition issues, and I really didn't like the gummy bear story. You will lose weight if you eat 1500 calories a week. You have to find a way to maintain your healthy weight when you readjust your calories to 1800-2000 calories. You should always exercise.
Be well.
Rice Diet Solution_ The Solution.......2007-01-13
I have not finished reading the book from cover to cover, but I have been following the program and have lost about twenty pounds. The recipes are excellent. I have recommended the publication to my friends. I do believe with this book I can finally lose the weight I have been trying to lose for many years. Also it has helped me keep my blood sugars under control. The price was good too.
Losing weight is the smaller benefit.......2006-12-26
My wife and I stumbled upon this book last May and made a commitment to give it a try for one week. We were both overweight to the tune of about 40 pounds each. At first, the diet seemed a challenge because it was so different from our eating habits, but as the first few days went by we both noticed how much happier we were with everything in our life. Much to our great surprise these feelings continued AND we continued to lose weight. Having lost the weight we both marvel at how easy it seemed to be, after many attempts to lose weight via other diets and methods.
I agree with one reviewer that the book is not cross referenced very well and that it is a cumbersome read, but the benefits we got far, far outweighed such a trivial matter.
It is a lifestyle change that works very well for us, having lost most of the weight we wanted to, and are happier as an unexpected benefit. Give it a try for a week and see if you feel better. Perhaps you will experience it the way we have, and your life will be changed forever.
Spectacular Spectacular.......2006-12-23
It's the most accurate description in my vernacular. This book is an extraordinary work. Combining dual strategies of both portion control and low energy density eating, this text provides superior support for sustained weight loss as is evident by their high success rate (63 percent keep weight off for 1 year or more, 43 percent for 5 years or more). Low sodium intake is an integral part of the diet which includes fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and low fat dairy. There are 4 parts, the diet, mindful eating, daily rest and social support. I can't speak highly enough about the Rice Diet Solution.
Wouldn't recommend it........2006-12-20
I was not impressed with this book. I guess if you get to the point where you no longer want to taste seasonings in your food, this would be great. In addition, I would be too afraid to lose weight on this diet only to go back to eating real food and gain it all back again. I've decided to just cut back and get in some exercise, and IT'S WORKING!

Book Description
From the Impresario of NBC’s hit show The Apprentice
TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: if you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”
And here’s how he does it: the art of the deal.
Beginning with a week in Trump’s high-stakes life, Trump: The Art of the Deal gives us Trump in action. We see just how he operates day to day—how he runs his business and how he runs his life—as he chats with friends and family, clashes with enemies, efficiently buys up Atlantic City’s top casinos, changes the face of the New York City skyline . . . and plans the tallest building in the world.
TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I play it very loose. I don’t carry a briefcase. I try not to schedule too many meetings. I leave my door open. . . . I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.”
Even a maverick plays by rules, and here Trump formulates his own eleven guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest deals; he shatters myths (“You don’t necessarily need the best location. What you need is the best deal”); he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker’s art: from the abandoned property that became the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to the seedy hotel that became the Grand Hyatt; from the race to rebuild Central Park’s Wollman Skating Rink to the byzantine saga of the property that became Trump Tower. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it.
TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I always go into a deal anticipating the worst. If you plan for the worst—if you can live with the worst—the good will always take care of itself.”
Donald Trump is blunt, brash, surprisingly old-fashioned in spots—and always, always an original. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur and an unprecedented education in the art of the deal. It’s the most streetwise business book there is—and a sizzling read for anyone interested in money and success.

[2 stars out of four, or three out of five] Trump, trumps himself and fails sports 101 in the process.......2007-09-27
Unless your a fan of this braggard, who's gone
bankrupt more times than O.J., the N.Y. and N.J
markets are gonna be oblique to most. But the sports
parts are not that good. Yes, I was glad to see the
USFL challenge the overrated NFL and yes, I was glad
to have trumps high priced lawyers stick it to the
Corporate Fascist Alvin H. Rosencranz (who euphanis-
tically called himself 'Pete' Rozelle. But Trump
makes so many wrong statements in here that one has
to wonder if there was an illiterate ghost-writer
afoot. No, the American Football League did NOT
start in 1962, it was 1960-69. No the 1970's old
World Football League didn't start in 1973, it was
1974-75. He also lied about Don Shula, Miami's
legendary Coach about to come Coach the USFL's
New Jersey team. Trump claims Shula nixed the deal
because he wanted an apartment in Trump's building
- Free! He claims Larry Csonka's idea to merge the
CFL (is something like that were posible) was a
bad idea caliming that the CFL had a bunch of nobody
players - totally untrue! They still to this day have
many great players. NFL QBs like Trent Green, Jeff
Garcia and others have CFL experience. Trump's sign-
ing of Doug Flutie was a highlight to be sure. It was
the third straight Heisman winner the USFL beat out
the NFL from getting in their league although they
all went there later. Get Flutie's book entitled
Flutie for the real story. It took Flutie until 1988
to get all his money owed him. Trump's main loss in
a USFL sense was bribing the other USFL owners to
going to the fall. Yes, this artsie-fartsie dealer
is slick. But is always comes back around and now
he is on the Apprentice. And dumb commercials.R.I.P.
I just really enjoyed it.......2007-09-10
So this book is not a plain "how to" book. That's fine. If you have just enough skill, you'll find that this is not only great story telling about how he put all these deals together that made him millions upon millions, but also how he did it. He throws bits of his psychology around through out the book, those are easy to catch, and if you look just a little deeper you'll see all the other points that helped make him so rich, things like: persuasion, hard work, calculated risk, being involved in your business, don't leave things to chance, work with the best, don't be afraid of something you don't know, find ways to make things work for you, etc. I could go on and on.
Don't expect this to be your "how to make deals manual" but if you are the right person, you just might get more pointers than you expect. Like I said in the title, I just really enjoyed this book, regardless of what it is not.
Oldie but a Goodie.......2007-09-03
This book may be 20 years old, but the practices explained are as timely today as they were then. The basics rarely change, whether you are dealing in real estate or producing a product. The chapters are concise, solid stories on how deals were put together, obsticles overcome and politics played. Mr. Trump's style is an easy read and explains the game that he loves and makes no apologies for; making money. I found it a fascinating book.
Ahhh The Donald............2007-07-25
Dont expect to get much advice on how to negociate a deal.. even though the book is titled "The art of the deal" The book is more so about Trump, his life and his business dealings. Its still pretty good reading none the less. 4 Stars.
I'm not a big fan of Trump.......2007-07-01
But I have to be honest; I thought the book was great. Mostly, I'm not a big fan because I find him to be vein, pompous, arrogant, and a blatant self-promoter. You have to give it to him though, this is what works for him, and this is what has made Donald Trump a household name. I think he'd be successful regardless, but like most successful developers he wouldn't be a celebrity (how many millionaire developers do you know?). The beautiful thing about it is he's pretty honest about his strategy in the book. This book was written 20 years ago, and even then he was the same guy. He understands the power of promotion, even if it's self-promotion.
There are several things I loved about the book. First, his blatant honesty about himself, the reason why he does the things he does, and his opinions on his rivals. He comes clean about his strategy for calling everything he does the best, greatest, or biggest "in the world". He knows it may or may not be true, but he's just after the effect of those powerful words, and not whether or not they can be contested.
Second, I enjoyed the journey of traveling through his mind, as he contemplates the pros and cons, and finally the reason for moving forward with or declining the deals described in his book.
Lastly, I really felt like you get a better understanding of what his day-to-day is like. Even thought this is 20 years ago, his routine is probably about the same, doing a thousand things at once. All of which must meet his standard for tremendous scale and proportion.
Trump has a strategy, and his arrogance is part of it. He has reached his many goals and for him, life is really about these challenges, and the fun of surpassing them and getting to the finish line. This hobby of his has amounted to a tremendous personal fortune. But in the end, it's clear that it's not so much about the money, as it is about winning. You can take away some pretty valuable lessons from this book.
So regardless of how you feel about the guy, the book is worth checking out. It's no masterpiece (thus my 4 stars), but it is entertaining, insightful, somewhat motivating and instructive, and a very easy read. Definitely recommend.

Book Description
She was the most outlandish, outrageous, in-your-face symbol of the age - and suddenly, shockingly, she was gone. In life her antics, adventures and behavior kept a nation riveted; in death she stunned a world gripped by the surprise and swiftness of her unexpected passing. The woman was, of course, Anna Nicole Smith. This is the story of the little girl from west of nowhere, born into a broken, dysfunctional, dirt-poor family, told by the one woman who knew her best - her sister. Her fierce resolve, pluck, luck and determination allowed her to claw her way to celebrity status, becoming a tabloid staple, and to reach the potential of unimaginable wealth. And then, in a moment, she was gone, not yet 40 years old. A Horatio Alger story with a bitter ending, TRAIN WRECK- The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith, is the definitive story of the rise and swift fall of one of the most compelling characters to blaze across the American sky.

Uhhh what?.......2007-09-28
Luckily I didn't spend money on this book because it gave me a headache just trying to get through the first chapter. The writing is SO BAD. I can't believe she collaborated with someone and this is the best they could do. It jumps around so much and alot of the book has nothing to do with Anna at all. I figure the reason for that is Donna's writing what she knows and she DOESN'T KNOW ANNA. It's all old news and assumptions. I could have written all the "secrets" that are in this book. Most of the photos are of Donna's family which sure they're partially related, but these people don't know Anna.
If you *have* to read this book, do what I did, and go to the library.
grave-robbing at its best... .......2007-09-22
one word: trash. i bought this book because i felt, well, that no one could probably tell us the personality of this strong woman (and anyone who has gone through what anna nicole smith went through is definitely strong). i figured her sister would clue me in about the culture that brought this young woman to a tragic end. i must say, it is not there. this book would probably amount to "gossip" and nothing else. if you want to read everything you have already heard in the media, it is an okay read. if you are curious about anna nicole's life, this book won't offer you much.
Train Wreck.......2007-09-12
I thought this book was very interesting. I have never been a fan of Anna but found this book to be a good read.I now understand Anna a little better and see that she really had a very sad life. If you are a fan or not this is a good book.
Love you Anna!!!!.......2007-09-09
Good book, I ordered it the second it came out. Very nice cover and image, beautiful packaging. Donna Hogan is a decent writer. I think she might have been false on a few things but over all it was good and worthwhile for Die-hard Anna fans like myself. I LOVE ANNA NICOLE!!!!!!! Been her biggest fan since she came out. She is the most beautiful creature to have ever graced this planet and it is a shame she is gone. Rest is Peace Beautiful and keep the books comin!!!!!
"User-Loser".......2007-09-08
Donna Hogan is just exactly what Anna said she was a "user-loser". She is trying to get her 15 minutes by trashing her half sister who she obviously really knows nothing about. Everything she claims to know comes from the media. She is the epitome of "trailer trash" and too ignorant to realize it. She thinks that her own sleeping with married men and whoever else will have her makes her worldly and sofisticated and that her use of Anna's name to further her causes is ok, yet she trashes her half sister who doesn't appear to have done anything worse than she herself has done. I wish I hadn't purchased this book because I hate to think of her succeeding in making money from trashing her dead sister. She is disgusting.

Customer Reviews:
I'd rather smell diapers..........2007-10-16
than read the rest of this book. Despite her Princeton degree (which I think calls into question the caliber of the school), Brooke Shields has all the writing skill of the average 6 year-old. She is out of touch with the real world; she is a privileged, pampered, sniveling wench. Her complaints of powdery CLEAN diaper smell, having to take a crap, and having to be cleaned by a nurse because she was too damn lazy to take care of herself, all smacks of ego and elitism. I wish she had jumped out of the window, or swallowed the bottle of pills than taken taken pen to paper. I want my money back as I couldn't stomach one more chapter of this drivel.
I will however keep it on my bookshelf, because whenever I do feel depressed, this book with indeed be the antidote. For THAT, I thank Brooke Shields. What a hilarious, mad-cap adventure it is!
depicts PPD perfectly.......2007-09-30
I, too, had severe PPD. I, too, have written a book about it. This is 50 times better than Marie Osmond's book. If you are gettting it because it's written by a celebrity..well I suppose that's appealing to some people...but this was not like Marie's book in that regard. Brooke comes across as a regular person. PPD is not picky about who it afflicts. Brooke is real and open and brutally honest. She helped me identify some feelings I'd not been able to express. Thank you, Brooke, for doing such a great job! I have no idea what you could've done better. In my opinion, this was dead on and flawless. If you don't buy my book, buy Brooke's!
Just OK - not really that much on PPD.......2007-09-10
It felt like the PPD was discussed very briefly and most of the book was her telling her story of how she grew up, how she wanted a baby, how hard it was to get there, how she missed her old life, how she then loved her baby, how cute her baby is, how she balanced her career and motherhood, her relationship with her mother, yada yada yada. I certainly wouldn't read this book to learn about PPD. It is just an easy read book if you are interested in looking into the lives of celebrities.
Changed my life!!.......2007-09-04
I'm so glad i bought this book. I was suffering from postpartum depression, and I was ashamed of the thoughts that i was thinking and why i didnt feel a bond with my daughter... I read the book and it made me realize I needed to do something about it. GREAT BOOK!!
Honestly Written.......2007-08-15
Honestly written, so truthful,I am sure it was as painful to write as it was to experience. This had to be. For Tom (Jack*ff) Cruise to go spurting off his ideas and opinions(opinions obviously not solicited from Brook or her husband) was not only in poor taste, but dangerous. What is wrong with him? Not that I think America at large listens to Tom, I for one will not buy any paper, book, see any movie or show that endorses him. As for his poor wife katie Holmes she looks miserable and should run....not walk away from this marriage. He is as lousy as a bedside doctor as he is an actor. Matt Lauer should have b*tched slapped him when he got in his face. While I myself had uneventful pregnancies and no problems after(NO blues, thank God)It is thoughtful and honest and gives other women hope. God Bless Brook and her children.

Customer Reviews:
Finally an accurate ANNA NICOLE SMITH biography.......2007-10-18
I found this book GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL DOLL: THE ANNA NICOLE SMITH STORY to be the most accurate and informative biography out on the market today about this beautiful blonde. I also found it to be an easy read and very to the POINT. I was pleased with learning the facts....AND JUST THE FACTS! Sad to see that ANNA is gone from our lives now....but at least not forgotten.
Shocking.......2007-10-06
Shocking. Absolutely shocking book. That gal would do anything. I just pray that Dannielynn never reads this book.
can i say gold digger?!!.......2007-10-01
thought the book was very well written. it makes me wonder who can really be a fan of anna nicole. she absolutely seem to be out of control her whole life and used people(yes male and female) for what she could get out of them and step on them on her way to the next. poor daniel didnt have a chance. she exposed this young man to things he should have never seen or known about from a very young age. this story covers her life from about junior high until her death. exposes her lifestyle and the spend spend ways she lived her life.if someone gave her 100,000 she spent 1,000.000. out of control! it is a wonder she lived as long as she did, since she drank and took drugs from 16 till the end. reveals to what lengths she would go to get her hands on money....married men, single men, good men,bad men without ONE BIT OF GUILT!! shocking what depths she would go to. very good read....to bad it is a true story!!!
Great Big Beautiful Doll: The Anna Nicole Smith Story.......2007-06-27
I thought this book was well written but thought there were parts that didn't need to be in the book. I didn't think the nude pictures needed to be in the book to sell it.
The book gave a good sense of how Anna Nicole lived and what a weak person she was. She let herself be lead around by people just because she wasn't educated and she loved money and fame. It is worth reading if you were a Anna Nicole fan.
A 'must' acquisition for any general lending library.......2007-06-17
GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL DOLL: THE ANNA NICOLE SMITH STORY couldn't be more timely: it's released in a newly updated edition to provide a biography of Smith's rise to fame and her glitzy, bright life. The authors aren't outsiders to her life, either: Redding is the photographer who helped launch her career with his Polaroid's; his life was Smith's hairstylist. Their personal relationship with Smith spices her biography and the inclusion of many rare photos makes for a 'must' acquisition for any general lending library; especially those where biographies of celebrities are in demand.

Book Description
Whiskey and porn stars, hot reds and car crashes, black leather and high heels, overdoses and death. This is the life of Mötley Crüe, the heaviest drinking, hardest fighting, most oversexed and arrogant band in the world. Their unbelievable exploits are the stuff of rock 'n' roll legend. They nailed the hottest chicks, started the bloodiest fights, partied with the biggest drug dealers, and got to know the inside of every jail cell from California to Japan. They have dedicated an entire career to living life to its extreme, from the greatest fantasies to the darkest tragedies. Tommy married two international sex symbols; Vince killed a man and lost a daughter to cancer;Nikki overdosed, rose from the dead, and then OD'd again the next day; and Wick shot a woman and tried to hang his own brother. But that's just the beginning. Fueled by every drug they could get their hands on and obscene amounts of alcohol, driven by fury and headed straight for hell, Mötley Crüe raged through two decades, leaving behind a trail of debauched women, trashed hotel rooms, crashed cars, psychotic managers, and broken bones that has left the music industry cringing to this day. All these unspeakable acts, not to mention their dire consequences, are laid bare in The Dirt.
Here -- directly from Nikki, Vince, Tommy, and Mick -- is the unexpurgated version of the whole glorious, gut-wrenching story. In these pages, published for the first time anywhere, are Tommy Lee's letters to Pamela Anderson from prison: Mick's confession to having an incurable disease that is slowly killing him; Vince's experience burying his own daughter -- and the train wreck that his life became afterward; and Nikki's anguished struggle to deal with an entire life fueled by anger over his childhood abandonment, his discovery of the family he never knew he had -- and his subsequent loss of them. And all of it accompanied by scores of rare, never-before-published photographs, mug shots, and handwritten lyrics. No one is spared. Not David Lee Roth, Ozzy Osbourne, Vanity, Aerosmith, Heather Locklear, AC/DC, Lita Ford, Iron Maiden, Pamela Anderson, Guns N' Roses, Donna D'Errico, RATT, or those two girls from Dallas, Texas.
Make no mistake about it: these guys are geniuses. They invented glam metal and then left it in the dust; sold more than forty million albums from Shout at the Devil to Dr. Feelgood; toured the world dozen times and have the scars to prove it it; and maintained a rabid following in an era of throwaway pop stars. Mötley Crüe has done nothing less than tattoo the psyche of the entire MTV generation. They are the ultimate rock 'n' roll band. And if you don't believe it, read The Dirt. You don't know what decadence is...

The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band.......2007-10-13
I am not into any music really. My favorite reading is autobiographies. I am older than any of the authors of this book. My daughter was cleaning her house and lent me this book to read. I thought "oh sure, what do I want to read this for" but I took it anyway. That was less than a week ago. Once I opened it I hated to put the book down. I finished it last night and now wonder if there will ever be The Dirt II.
One of the best books I've read lately..........2007-10-11
If you are a Motley Crue fan or just a rock n roll fan in general, this book is a definite read for you. I read it in 2 days, I just couldn't put it down it was that good. I thought the most interesting person in the book was Nikki Sixx (wow, the things he went through in his life will amaze you that he IS still alive). Read the book, I don't think you will be disappointed. Great read!!
A great read.......2007-10-09
I just finished reading the book The Dirt, a semi-autobiography of the 80's band Motley Crue. It's a great read that is pretty mesmorizing. All four band members write about their childhood, the crazy period where they become the most famous band in America and then the post-fame period where they turn to drugs and amazingly hot chicks.
The middle section of the book is how the Crue got from a great live act to becoming a hit. They were constantly selling out shows on the LA Strip but none of the record labels wanted to sign them to a record deal. This was the early 80's and the entire industry thought that New Wave was the thing to be and Rock was dead. A 20-year old intern at Electra convinced the head of A&R to let him sign them. They then rel-released their first album and went on the next year to sell 5 million records. Even with that success, the label wanted to drop them because they didn't like their image. After the next year when they were the top selling artist of the year did Electra decide to stick with them.
Throughout the book Nikki Sixx emerges as the only one who understood what the band's direction was. He wrote most of the songs and consciously decided they should be a crossover from hard rock to mainstream. He also seems to be the glue that held the band together. He also was dating Lita Ford for most of their early days but eventually broke up when they went on tour for 18 months. They toured with Ozzy, who was even crazier than they were. He eventually married Baywatch star Donna D'Errico.
You also read how much drugs they took in both their early days. They were constantly doing coke, heroin, and anything else they could get their hands on. As a result they destroyed almost everything in the path and they hooked up with anything that moved. Both Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee overdosed and almost died, Vince Neil got into 3 drunk driving accidents, and Mick is a full-blown alcoholic even today.
You also read about Tommy Lee's marraige to Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson (who he dated for only 4 days before they were married). Also about Vince's solo band and all the tragedies they've encountered along the way.
The beginning is pure rock and roll and the end is just sad. You would never think that their lives would be so hard but they all really struggle just to make it day to day. I guess a bunch of ego and booze and drugs will do that to you.
Note: i just saw here they're making a movie from the book with Val Kilmer and Christopher Walker rumored to play Ozzy and David Lee Roth.
Best book I've ever read!!!.......2007-09-30
Art is a piece of work that moves you & this book did. I laughed, I was disgusted, I even cried. This is twenty years of a band strugling though fights, overdoses, suicide attempts, mariages, deaths, prison (it's all here!). I love how the story is told by different people so you can hearing everybody's version of what happened (crazy how everybody remebers things differently). You get to hear what happened behind closed doors & what wasn't in the tabloids. It truly was an awesome read - very hard to put down!
Great book.......2007-09-18
From page one your are on a journey, as told by each memeber of the band, from the worst part of L.A. and Motley Crue's beginnings, to their rise to super stardom in the world of rock and roll. I was never much of a Crue fan when they were in their prime, but as I got older, I started to like their music and enjoyed reading about their beginning and the typical crazy road that most rock stars take.

When the first edition of Steven Van Yoder's GET SLIGHTLY FAMOUS hit the streets, I was thrilled to read a marketing book that was both strategic and practical in terms of developing a marketing plan to support my business. Steven's matter-of-fact but urgent call to get clear about your marketing platform stood out amongst a sea of writers all singing the praises of having a niche. The difference? Steven used a methodical and well-conceived approach and filled the book with case studies to validate his points. Ron Chernow, whose previous books have taken on the Morgan and Warburg financial empires, now turns his attention to the patriarch of the Rockefeller dynasty. John D. was history's first recorded billionaire and one of the most controversial public figures in America at the turn of the 20th century. Standard Oil--which he always referred to as the result of financial "cooperation," never as a "cartel" or a "monopoly"--controlled at its peak nearly 90 percent of the United States oil industry. Rockefeller drew sharp criticism, as well as the attention of federal probes, for business practices like underpricing his competitors out of the market and bribing politicians to secure his dominant market share.
While Chernow amply catalogs Rockefeller's misdeeds, he also presents the tycoon's human side. Making use of voluminous business correspondence, as well as rare transcripts of interviews conducted when Rockefeller was in his late 70s and early 80s, Chernow is able to present his subject's perspective on his own past, re-creating a figure who has come down to us as cold and unfeeling as a shrewd, dryly humorous man who had no inner misgivings about reconciling his devout religious convictions with his fiscal acquisitiveness. The story of John D. Rockefeller Sr. is, in many ways, the story of America between the Civil War and the First World War, and Chernow has told that story in magnificently fascinating depth and style.
Book Description
John D. Rockefeller, Sr.--history's first billionaire and the patriarch of America's most famous dynasty--is an icon whose true nature has eluded three generations of historians. Now Ron Chernow, the National Book Award-winning biographer of the Morgan and Warburg banking families, gives us a history of the mogul "etched with uncommon objectivity and literary grace . . . as detailed, balanced, and psychologically insightful a portrait of the tycoon as we may ever have" (Kirkus Reviews). Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller's exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book will indelibly alter our image of this most enigmatic capitalist.
Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world's richest man by creating America's most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.
Rockefeller was likely the most controversial businessman in our nation's history. Critics charged that his empire was built on unscrupulous tactics: grand-scale collusion with the railroads, predatory pricing, industrial espionage, and wholesale bribery of political officials. The titan spent more than thirty years dodging investigations until Teddy Roosevelt and his trustbusters embarked on a marathon crusade to bring Standard Oil to bay.
While providing abundant new evidence of Rockefeller's misdeeds, Chernow discards the stereotype of the cold-blooded monster to sketch an unforgettably human portrait of a quirky, eccentric original. A devout Baptist and temperance advocate, Rockefeller gave money more generously--his chosen philanthropies included the Rockefeller Foundation, the University of Chicago, and what is today Rockefeller University--than anyone before him. Titan presents a finely nuanced portrait of a fascinating, complex man, synthesizing his public and private lives and disclosing numerous family scandals, tragedies, and misfortunes that have never before come to light.
John D. Rockefeller's story captures a pivotal moment in American history, documenting the dramatic post-Civil War shift from small business to the rise of giant corporations that irrevocably transformed the nation. With cameos by Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, Jay Gould, William Vanderbilt, Ida Tarbell, Andrew Carnegie, Carl Jung, J. Pierpont Morgan, William James, Henry Clay Frick, Mark Twain, and Will Rogers, Titan turns Rockefeller's life into a vivid tapestry of American society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is Ron Chernow's signal triumph that he narrates this monumental saga with all the sweep, drama, and insight that this giant subject deserves.
Customer Reviews:
Bigger than life personalities?.......2006-03-01
Rockefeller is reported to have searched endlessly for golf balls lost in an attempt to recover them, yet could nearly buy the world - why?
Objective biographies are important to show that it is rarely money or greed that inspires the mind of man; it is the pursuit of the solution to the particular problem that he has defined worthy of solution. Both great inventions and great works of art have been formed as a result of the tiny seeds of construction or of destruction that engage the human spirit.
Without it, are we not all merely reduced to automated machine status, the robots of today for the future of tomorrow?
Is the mind of man made for the pursuit of money, or for the pursuit of satisfaction of what he perceives is worthy of addressing, focusing his attention upon the manner and the object of his passion?
What makes people tick is a source of inspiration often overlooked in the attempt to idolize or endow humanity, and far too often, misconstrued by mistaken others who aim to profit from that misinterpretation.
Molded soles, like molded fingerprints, rarely sit anyone else. Why then do we not concentrate upon the perspective of what men aim for, and why, rather than what they accomplish, and its yield?
Lessons from a Self Made Billionaire.......2006-01-01
This book is the best biography I've read thus far.
Ron Chernow has a deep understanding of
economics and history. He uses this understanding to
paint an accurate, balanced and complete picture of
the Rockerfeller dynasty with J.D. Rockerfeller as the
center of their powerful universe.
To emphasise just how well this book was written,
consider the fact that I spent my whole
Christmas weekend reading it! I couldn't move from my
library or sleep until it was done. Though the book
weighs in at approximately seven hundred pages, it is
reads like a novel, a trait which makes it both
palatable and pithy.
Synopsis
Rockerfeller has all the traits of a classic self made hero. His
antecedents are not amazing. He grew up in a poor
family featuring a bigamist foot-lose father who was
hardly ever around. His father taught John painful
lessons in business and human behaviour. John's father
would regularly tell John to jump from his high chair
into his father's arms. Once, in order to teach John
never to trust anyone, he told John to jump. He then
walked away, leaving John to slam painfully into the ground.
John's mother was the backbone of the family; quiet,
anassuming and hardworking. He assumed the role of
surrogate father and dedicated his life to ensuring his
mother and the rest of his family were safe, secure
and happy.
When Rockerfeller got into the business world, he
began as a book keeper. It was from these early
beginnings that he showed the traits that would be the
core of his success. He was meticulous and diligent
when keeping financial records and accounts. He would
manage his own funds as well as the company's money down to the
decimal point! Like Warren Buffet after him,
J.D. Rockerfeller would emphasis that "numbers are
everything."
J.D also proved that discipline is more important than
intelligence. In school, he wasn't the sharpest blade
in the set but his slow, diligent, determined and
disciplined approach to study ensured his success. He
emphasised this in his business dealings as well. With
this method, he created the jaggernaut monopoly of
Standard Oil. He began by consolidating the mass of oil
refineries and wells in Cleveland under his umbrella.
Later, after recruiting his alter ego, Henry Flagler,
they would proceed to dominate the oil industry
thoughout the world.
Rockerfeller also exemplified a reticence that would
inspire respect and fear in his enemies while planting
admiration and loyalty in his friends. At board
meetings, he was often known to lie back in a settee
with his eyes closed as he let his leiutenants debate.
Later, he would discuss these issues in great detail,
as though he had absorbed and understood everything
without skipping a beat. Within his company, he was a
ghost. Employees would never see him arrive or watch
him leave. However, they were made acutely aware of
his presence when he popped up at some underlings desk
and discussed their jobs and records in great detail. He
knew everything and everyone.
Later on, Standard Oil would become the focus of the
anti-trust movement. The Spellman Act was passed in
order to curb its power. In later years,
Rockerfeller's juggernaut would be split up with
unforseen results. Instead of destroying his wealth,
as his detractors and politicians had hoped, his
wealth and that of his shareholders trippled!
Rockerfeller's success was enduring and could not be
stopped or limited.
Rockerfeller dedicated the first half his life to becoming the
richest man on the planet. He then dedicated the
remaining half to becoming the greatest philanthropist
in the planet. His medical foundations brought
back the disciplined approach he applied to business to
the medical field that had erstwhile been dominated by
quacks and homeopaths. Were it not for Rockerfeller's
contributions to medicine, modern health might not be
as advanced as it is now.
After living to the ripe old age of ninety eight,
Rockerfeller had achieved more than most people achive in a
hundred lifetimes. He was one of those individuals so
powerful that he forever changed the destiny of
humanity forever.
Something in the nature of J.D. Rockerfeller had to
occur in America, and it is all to the good of the
world that he was tight-lipped, consistent and
amazingly free from vulgar vanity, sensuality and
quarrelsomeness. His cold prsistence and ruthlessness
may arouse something like horror, but for all that he
was a forward-moving force, a constructive power.
--H. G. Wells. The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind.
Conclusion
This book is mandatory reading for all students of
success. It teaches the nature of the monopolist, the
spirit of the leader, the hunger of the rich, the
ambition of the visionary, the structure of a dynasty
and the soul of the innovator.
I've idolized Rockerfeller my whole life. Reading this
biography gave me an understanding of both his faults
and his virtues. It humanised him. The fact that
Rockerfeller is so much like a next door neighbour
leads the reader to a very important conclusion:
success is not about nature, it's about nurture. It
is not about intelligence but of intent. It is not
about destiny but of decision. It is not about magic,
it is about method.
Each of us can make the decision to be successful. All
we have to do is practice the method by mimicking that
of the giants who have come before us. That is the
Billionaire Way.
Good Stuff In This One!.......2005-12-18
We do want to know what made John D tick, and about his family as well. Are we surprised to know it was mostly do-ray-me with some Calvinism thrown in? Perhaps not. At least we are glad to know that he could spare those dimes... And that he enjoyed his twilight years gofing in sunny Ormond Beach!
If we are from Southwestern Pennsylvania, we have heard the unsavory stories of how he consolidated his power and even if we aren't we have Miss Tarbell's journalism to fall back on.*
Chernow relates this part of the tale well. Would that there were a bit more about the surreptitious doings of Mr. R's agents and underlings. Ah well, the good people of Oil City and Titusville remember...
If we want to know what happens to the children of the rich and famous, Chernow has that too, and there is nothing quite like this book's sad account of John D's daughter's ill-treatment in the hands of a rather well-known psychoanalyst. The train, the Rolls and the waving handkerchief will remain long in the reader's memory.

Book Great, Quality Good, .......2005-09-01
The seller was on time and very quick. The book is exactly what I wanted, but it said "like new". The book was from a public library with all of the stamps and codes and stuff on it. Not a big deal, I just wish I had known that before. Otherwise the transaction went great.
Very Impressive.......2005-04-05
It is Ron Chernow's writing style and skill that impressed me the most; next was the level of detail offered about John D. That said, John D.'s life in itself, as pesented by Ron, offers an invaluable lesson or two.

it was really good.......2007-08-09
i like how she described everything, and it gives some really good info on her and gene
what fun!.......2007-07-17
growing up in the same time frame as shannon tweed, i can completely go where she's been and laud her surviving and thriving today as a result! an interesting glimpse into what makes her relationship with a bad boy of rock'n'roll tick.whatever demons have driven either one of this couple, there is an air of openness and honesty that must be healthy and refreshing not only for their fans, but a great environment in which her family seems remarkably well-adjusted for ANYone in THIS day and time. thanks for sharing!
Very Disappointed!.......2007-06-27
I love biographies of all kinds and I loved Gene's book 'Kiss and Make Up'. I also love Shannon on her reality show "Gene Simmon's Family Jewels". One thing I did not love, was this book. It was horrible. I know there are so many more things she is not sharing, and that is her prerogative. This was just plain boring and seemed to be too edited by Gene. I never give books away, but I just recently gave this one to a senior citizens home (I am sure someone will be plucked when they see the nude shots inside.) If you like to read about Playmate's lives, or any stars lives, read The Bunny Tales or even Sharon Osbourne's book. Don't waste your money on this- it was horrible!
great read interesting book.......2007-05-31
interesting and a great read.if your a gene simmons fan or family jewels fan you will love this book.
Boring.......2007-05-15
Thank goodness I got a used copy to take to the beach. The beginning is about growing up in Canada, boring. I stomached a few pages of this then skipped to the early Hollywood days. If you title a book "Kiss and Tell", then by all means do it! I get the feeling Ms. Tweed is ashamed of her past and does not want to upset her children.
