Book Description

At some point everyone asks the question: What happens when we die? Robert J. Grant, a popular writer, lecturer, and researcher in many areas of contemporary spirituality, offers a dramatic and encouraging look at the realms beyond physical death.

The Place We Call Home is filled with the personal stories of those who have experienced the other side, either through death, communications from those who have died, or near-death experiences. These stories illuminate the answers to questions about messages from dead loved ones, the light-filled realms of the afterlife, and the real meaning of the "shadowlands."

This is a hopeful and inspiring look at the dimension of life beyond the illusion of death and celebrates the eternal nature of the human soul.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic read, wonderfully written.......2006-11-05

Grant is published by ARE Press, as are other authorities on Cayce.
His writing style is clear and interesting, and his books are anecdotal and entertaining, as well as informative .

He is one of five people who spent five years reading every single Cayce reading in the library of the ARE, and putting it on CD. That means if Cayce said it, Grant read it.

This makes him one of the foremost authorities on Cayce, today.

One does not need to be a student of Cayce, or interested in his foundation to enjoy this book. It is for anyone seeking answers to life after death.
I encourage you to give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2005-05-09

In the last few years I have read many spiritual books, and this is now one of my favorites.

The author draws on the readings of Edgar Cayce, as well as the views of several others, to discuss the realms that await us after death. A great asset of this book is that it shows how our thoughts and beliefs will actually impact the realm we find ourselves in upon death. For instance, although God does not damn anyone to a hellish afterlife, if someone believes that that is what they will find, they will. However, no one is stuck in a "negative" realm forever - there is always help available to those who are ready to give up their "earth-bound" thoughts.

The author also discusses the importance of prayer and meditation in preparing our souls for the afterlife, and he has included several exercises to help readers with the process.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in spirituality, the after-life, &/or Edgar Cayce's readings.

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FROM A VERY ADVANCED SOUL.......2004-04-20

The author, Rob Grant, is one of the foremost authorities on the Cayce readings, having studied, catalogued and put them on CD-ROM over a period of five years. Being personally acquainted with the author, I will tell you that he is one of the most advanced souls I've ever met -- genuinely loving, kind, compassionate, helpful, open-minded and throughly knowledgeable about the Cayce readings. His book, The Place We Call Home, reflects all of these. It is a book that gives much hope to the terminally ill, as well as to all seekers. He has written a concise book enlightening the reader with all Edgar Cayce said about passing over to the other side and what we will find there. I have also met George Ritchie, whose near death experience Rob Grants refers to in his book and who wrote a best seller back in the 1960 called "Return from Tomorrow," from which much about which we understand about death and dying came. These two men, more than anyone else, have convinced me of the reality of the afterlife and what one can expect to find there.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS WONDERFUL, HOPEFUL and LOVING BOOK!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lost someone they love or simply has a curiosity about what happens when we die. It answers so many questions that we all have regarding the afterlife. It gives hope to those of us who are grieving, that we will see our loved ones again. It's the best book I've read yet on the subject and it's my #1 recommendation. Well organized and written so that most readers can comprehend it. A great work! I'd give this book 6 stars if I could!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on the Afterlife.......2005-06-04

I found this book to be an excellent source of information re: the afterlife. The author describes information that was received in various forms, such as near-death experiences, channeling & after-death communication, and draws heavily on many Edgar Cayce readings.

Many important insights that were gained from those on the Other Side are discussed, including: 1)Our thoughts become "things", and have a major effect on ourselves & others; 2)Where we find ourselves after death depends, at least in part, on our beliefs and how we choose to live our current life; 3)We are never alone - our loved ones and guides are always around us; 4)We are not seperate beings, instead we are all interconnected - etc...

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the afterlife &/or Edgar Cayce readings.

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Book.......2003-07-05

This book is well written and documented with a wealth of information gathered on the subject of the afterlife. The author holds true to his writing style of easy to read and understand language for the average individual. As with all his work, thus far, it's based upon the information from the Edgar Cayce Readings as well as other informative documentation.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with questions regarding the afterlife.

As a certified past-life therapist, I realize that Barbara Lane has put into words what I have instinctively known for years about accessing clues to past life memories. It is no accident that we tend to be attracted to or fascinated by specific people, places, occupations, or to scenes from movies, books, etc. Ms. Lane's book is insightful and very well written. I believe this book will be most helpful for anyone who is curious about his or her past-life history.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful 5 cd set.......2003-05-30

I just finished William Buhlman's 5 CD set, "Discovering Your Past Lives" with very successful results. The premise of the set is to lead you into a relaxed or hypnotic state and then William's voice will guide you into an exploration of your past lives. In my case, it was very effective, allowing me to experience a vivid past life event with little additional effort on my part. The CD set is very professionally and gently done and the excellent dialog is just as should be, helpful and non-intrusive. This is the equivalent of having a first-rate hypnotic session at less cost, at your convenience, and as many times as you wish. How could I not be impressed? I not only saw the `movie' of myself in a different life, but I was "in" the movie....a very satisfying and convincing experience. Thank you Mr. Buhlman !

I love this CD set. I had a vivid experience. By using these CD's I was able to access memories that had a profound effect on issues I'm currently dealing with.

    1 out of 5 stars Not so...........2002-09-15

I'm disappointed with this cd. The narrator goes too fast in guiding you. He wants you to relax and visualize certain events or situations in detail. OK, I did it, but within a few seconds he continues with guideline. HEY!! I haven't even finished the first one... besides that, I'm supposed to be relax and take it slowly. He goes waaaaaaaaaay too fast for one to truly feel and absorb the past. Somehow you have to hurry and visualize and feel things to be in pace with the narrarator. - Which makes the whole process sucks! You then become hectic and having no relaxation for fear that you might loose track of what he is saying.
Its a waste of money. I wished I could have returned the product.

1 out of 5 stars Amazing Bruce on his Astral Trapeze.......2005-05-19

Moen's book recounts an intriguing series of personal journeys undertaken during classes at the Monroe Institute (TMI). The classes there build on experiences by its founder Robert Monroe detailed a series of books written over a span of many years. In a sense the Moen chronicle (this is vol 3) picks up where Monroe leaves off using the same kind of annoying jargon. Fortunately there is a glossary to guide the reader. Many other authors have tried to capture the goings-on at Monroe, but Moen seems to have turned it into a career. If you are a current or prospective TMI student, these writings could be the ultimate guide (or puff-piece) to bring a new level of understanding. However, if you are the average reader thinking from the title that you are going to learn something more about the afterlife as depicted by books in the spiritualist tradition, forget it. Science fiction fans would probably find great enjoyment with the work. Moen is an effective writer who maintains a fast-paced description of his experiences, but the jargon-laden pages are a bit much to attract attention from a general audience. His fun-filled episodes with their never-ending sexual overtones are more reminiscent of a teen-ager at Disneyland than a metaphysical explorer pushing to new levels of understanding. The volume is a testament to Moen's amazing astral abilities and his mentoring of TMI students. If you would like a description that is an order of magnitude more useful try the "Life in the world Unseen" series from Anthony Borgia or free afterlife ebooks at spiritwritings.com

5 out of 5 stars Voyages Into The Afterlife.......2002-09-17

Voyages Into the Afterlife, by Bruce Moen, is the third book in his Exploring the Afterlife series. The series is a continuing account of his exploration into non-physical realms, which he began in 1992.

Moen, who studies with the Monroe Institute in Virginia, first learned "retrieval," which is helping people who have recently died and need assistance with moving fully into the Afterlife. Once he learned the basics, he began serious exploration, the fascinating details of which he describes in this book.

In his out-of-body, or non-physical form, Moen travels to the center of the Earth, where he enters the "earth-core crystal," as well to the far reaches of the Universe. He also meets with other non-physical beings, some from outer space and some from Earth. Some beings are previously deceased humans, while others are the out-of-body manifestations of still-living humans.

Wherever he travels, and whomever he contacts, one message is emphasized again and again to Moen: that "pure, unconditional love" is the center of all existence. He speculates that the upcoming "Earth Changes" will initiate an unimaginably powerful infusion of pure, unconditional love that could change humankind forever.

Moen says that his explorations have shown that the Afterlife provides an "opportunity to live in complete freedom" after we die. He also says that you don't have to take his word for it, that "you can explore There yourself and learn from your own direct experience. There you might discover not just hope, but also knowledge" which can erase the fear of death.

Voyages Into the Afterlife, along with the first two volumes in the series, belong on the shelves of every reader curious about what exists beyond the physical world.

5 out of 5 stars The Plot Thickens and Gets Deeeep!.......2000-06-13

Ok, having voraciously read the first book, Voyages into the Unknown, and sort of plodded through the second one, Voyage Beyond Doubt (a slight mis-lead, as Bruce continues to doubt on occasion), all I can say is WHOW about this book.

Bruce continues his mechanistic perceptions of what happens "over there." As a mechanical engineer, I would expect him to describe in certain details the machine-like aspects of the various functionalities of how things work, in reference to The Coordinating Intelligences, the Entry Director and the Planning Center. What this gives me, is a mechanistic approach to how things are done. But what I am wondering is if this is how certain spiritual things which are beyond our comprehension are brought into comprehension for Bruce. What I am saying here is that these spiritual "functions" may not be as they appeared to Bruce, but in order for Bruce to understand what he was experiencing, it was made to appear as he experienced it...thus, if it were you or me experiencing these things...would we experience them just as Bruce did? Just because our experience is "different" does not lessen the value of how Bruce perceived these things. What is important, is that they DO exist, however they are truely carried out in whatever reality they really exist in.

God continuously makes for us what is incomprehensible, comprehensible to the extent that we may perceive in some fashion, at our own level of spiritual development, what IS. Therefore, I do not doubt what Bruce experienced, I only wonder if a different individual would perceive the same functionalities differently, depending upon level of understanding and level of spiritual development in context of soul development.

What I did find very tedious was the jumping exercizes with White Bear, which gave me little relevance and sort of bored me to death. Bruce could have shortened his extensive discourse on this, and gotten down to the facts a little bit quicker.

What I found most strange, was The Earth Core Crystal thing, and the necessity to boomerange one's soul into a higher focus level (readers who are unfamiliar, read book 1!). This was so that Bruce and others could contact the aliens who didn't know what emotion was. I found this part to be incredulous, considering that I believe God creates everything as a reflection of God, including aliens...though I cannot say for sure that God has not experimented with creating alternate beings NOT of God's personal image and likeness who may not possess the essential qualities of emotion. I am one of those people who believe God in God's Absolute Condition is Pure Unconditional Love. Therefore, its very hard for me to imagine God creating beings who lack any concept whatsoever of emotion and need to learn it from us earthbound souls.

The alien races were here to witness a massive deathkill of humanity...so we are lead to believe, but instead, came away stunned with first contact with the experience of LOVE! Bruce calls this, the GroupGathering...a group of alien races gathered here to witness the massive deathkill (so they think) or massive reduction of the human race. I cannot say that this will not happen in my reality of experience here as the future is yet to unfold, and obviously, our world is headed for serious ecological turmoil as portended by the Climatologists.

I am a little doubtful that its necessary to boomerang ourselves to get to higher spiritual levels. TM in purest form of "I" allows for migration to the higher spiritual planes. I am thinking that the entire Monroe Method is designed to investigate the low and medium level astral planes immediately adjacent to Earth...while not being able to explore the higher relms of purer, lighter spirit.

I knew all along that Bruce was going to discover that the other lady was merely his feminine self expressed...what took so long Bruce for you to realize that Spirit can express as either male of female? There was no mention of reincarnation in this series...once again, a serious lack of interpretation in regard to the Divine and the purpose of the development of the Soul. While I consider these three books to be highly valuable in terms of their contribution to the enlightenment of who we are, I find the lack of context to the Divine and to the Soul to be a drawback. Bruce, you need to get into these areas to fully explain what its really all about that you are doing and experiencing! In Spirit, there is no room for agnosticism.

I look forward to Book 4, I hope it leaves out the tedious exercizes of jumping and other such things, and gets more into what is actually SEEN.

My grade is A- for this book, A+ for effort

    5 out of 5 stars five stars.......2000-06-07

Bruce Moen deserves to be better known and this is why I want to write this short comment. Mind opener is an understatement; this book describes such a wider reality to the human condition that it truly causes one to rethink our being on earth and beyond. While at times the stuff seems incredible, Bruce still manages to remain the level headed person that we expect from a trained engineer. The concepts are exciting and they are often corroborated by others who have shared his experiences, thus validating much of it. I truly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading for those ready for the truth.......2000-02-08

This is the third book in an evolving story of afterlife adventures with Bruce Moen. Skillfully explained without interpretive fluff. He tells it like it is and explains the structure of the Afterlife like no one else. The first two books explain how he came about his abilities to percieve the afterlife and are well worth the read. This third one is where the fun begins! Keep a look out for his fourth book where he gets an extensive look within the Afterlife with tour guide the late Robert A. Monroe.

Wilma Fairbank catched my nurves of impression this time, when I found out there is a book described Liang and Lin's acheivement in English, the only one,an expensive one,but it worthes it.I decided to continually followed Lin's way,to do some research of classical Chinese architecture.I'd never said no to those difficulties since the obstancles always mislead my mind. There is one thing I hopefully didn't lost,a resoluted heart, nothing can move it.I don't care make more money or not,at least I mostly convinced myself to be a person have a pursuit of dreams. You could call me a freak, and I am still on the way to success.Lin and liang are the partners worked together to reach a goal.Unfortunatelly,I am an indepandent loner also emerged in the amazement of exploring a lost world. Thanks for Wilma's book,I could come trough the tunnel of history again.

Lin & Liang are forrunners of contemporary Chinese architecture. Like most idealistic intellectuals of the period, they went out to learn from the west and returned back home to contribute what they had learned.

This is an important trend in modern Chinese history. The long list of intellectuals includes Sun Yat Sen, Liang Qi Chao(the father of Liang)Chao Yuan Ren, Zhou En Lai, Tang Xiao Ping,.... It was a traumatic period for modern China. It was a time of possibilities, opportunities and frustrations.

One could not imagine the archievement and contributions of modern China to the world without these intellectuals.

The stories as told by Madame Wilma Fairbank is descriptive, touching and informative at the same time. Mrs. Fairbank(wife of John Fairbank) is a poet and historian at the same time. The book (text and images)is western journalism at its best.

The most difficult period for Lin & Liang is not Sino-Japanese War period. Although physically, Lin suffered from fleeing around and illness, but their spirit were high and friends were always around.

The most difficult period was after the liberation. Lin & Liang were destined to work with Chairman Mao, the founder of PRC. Based on their fruitful research and intellectual mind, they come up with the conclusion and dedicated their lives to the preservation of Chinese artefacts, and in most cases, Chinese architectural heritage.

As detailed descripted and well put by Madame Fairbank in the book, Lin & Liang travelled all over China and had produced hundreds and thousands of research papers with surveyed plans and photos. Wilma should have known, she joined and lived with them more than once. The Liangs' ideal and proposals to preserve holistically the ancient city of Beijing must had been in conflict with Chairman Mao's ideas. As the founder of PRC, Mao of course, would have his own plans. He believes, to me wrongly, that "Man would defeat Nature". He would like to see factories and other new buildings rising on the horizons of Beijing, Nanjing and everywhere in China.

This should be a matter of opinion. But as we all know, for a long period of time in contemporary China, a different opinion with Mao would be interpreted as a revisionist liner against the Communist Party! That's why Liang suffered so much and Lin died too young to suffer with him.

This is an important historic lesson that we, as a human being should all learn and study. Through the process of modernization, how should we deal with our heritage and nature? Liang proposed to preserve Old Beijing holistically. Beijing, as observed by Liang rightly, is the most complete form of an ancient city in the world! He is not an old man keeping only the 'Olive Tree'. Lin and Liang are genuine Chinese Architects. They proposed to preserve the old city walls and towers so that they could become civi open spaces and landscapes. People can enjoy history and live in history walking through.

Liang's second wife, Madame Lin Zhu said recently,"In the civic society, Liang is respected by many." Well put Madame Lin. (Lin Zhu's piece is included in the book also very moving.)

The problem is, it takes a few thousand years to build a civi society and a civiization, only takes a few second to destroy them. Should we not give deep thoughts to it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book written with life!.......2000-10-08

Anyone who want to know more about Liang Si-chen and Lin Hui-yin and their firends should read this book.

To be honest, I feel what make this book so interesting is the life story of Lin and Liang and their friendship with friends, especially the Fairbanks. The Architecture contents are good too, but the life stories of Lin and Liang, two most important pioneers in Ancent Chinese Architecture studies, make the book very charming and worth of reading.

You will know more about the history of 20th century China, before, during and after WWII. You will see how communists grab power in this used-to-be-great country and gradually turn these respectible scholars' life upside down. How they were changed from eager supporter of Chairman Mao's so called 'New China' into losing the minimal hope to live on. This is a great book, written by John F Fairbank's wife, to memorize their true friendship with Liang and Lin.

This is not just another book about architecture. This is a book written with life.

    4 out of 5 stars silent greatness.......2000-06-20

when two people decide to join hands and make something happen, that kind of unity becomes so powerful. i think that's what makes Liang and Lin memorable. and Mrs. Fairbank's close relationship with them made their life story vivid to the readers. a great book and great people in it.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD - what an opportunity!.......2007-10-17

Dr. Woolger's work in Past Live understanding is very deep and you can tell he is VERY passionate about what he does. He has pioneered a method of accessing the deeper inner realms we all have and he shares it in this book and CD. His classes are expensive and few and far between, so this is an amazing opportunity for most of us to be able to access his methods.

The chapters in the book are easy to work though and I like how he recommends you work through the accompanying cd as you go along. It makes it much more interactive.

GREAT book for those new to delving into past life research and exploration or for the more seasoned veteran. I highly recommend this book and CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point.......2007-01-19

4 out of 5 stars More introspection into common items.......2004-11-06

Keeping a diary is a commendable and worthwhile pursuit if its content forms a cohesive, relevant history that future generations can appreciate. However, if one treats "daily jottings as cheap therapy," the record created prevails only for the gain of one person, not progeny (48). Readers of Kyvig and Marty's Nearby History will never look at journal writing the same, and more importantly, they will not see ordinary things within close proximity as ordinary anymore.

In Nearby History, "the commonplace becomes the mystifying" (129). Kyvig and Marty succeed in making everyday items such as manhole covers and fire hydrants exciting, saying that a look at the materials used in their design, their function, the materials used in their construction, etc. tell a lot about the history of their locale (172-173). The volume shows that fast food restaurants anywhere can be excellent barometers of change over time (168). The authors suggest that something as boring as a tax form can be a useful historical trace (57). Nearby History teaches that seemingly mundane objects, upon critical introspection, can become a treasure trove of historical information. For instance, in the caption of a photograph of a small schoolhouse, the authors ask, "What does the physical appearance of a school suggest about the nature of the educational experience?" (31). Questions that should be posed when examining the facets of local history - family, religion, culture, etc. - abound in the volume. The answers to the book's questions can lead anyone on a more successful journey into the past.

To make trips into the past more rewarding, one cannot simply look at surviving written traces. Nearby History shows the importance of examining artifacts and their potential to add needed depth to the historical record. Words and pictures are abstractions - ideas conceived in the mind - while artifacts prove concrete (149). Artifacts are "silent carriers of vast amounts of information about the past (149). Material culture, the book explains, has been especially useful in uncovering women's history, since many women did not leave written records. Artifacts demonstrate how earlier generations solved daily problems and provide insights into tastes, customs, manners, and styles of living (156).

Through its handling of everyday items as historical records unto themselves, Nearby History can be treated as the practical guide to becoming an amateur historian. Its introduction argues that the emotional rewards of learning about a past affecting one's own life cannot be duplicated (12). However, its conclusion stresses that local history should be put into better context by comparing it to similar phenomena elsewhere, saying "the historian who wishes to understand a topic never regards it as existing in a vacuum" (217). Such an inference reiterates the book's strength - its continuing lesson that observing any item at face value yields practically nothing while continually asking questions produces an abundance of useful information.

The book's main weakness is easy to spot. It is astoundingly outdated. Much of the technology it suggests one use while doing research, especially in the collection of oral evidence, does not exist anymore or is rarely used. An updated edition would be welcome to better serve as a guide for historians, both amateur and academic, in their discovery of the vast array of stories told close at hand.

        4 out of 5 stars Nearby History (2nd edition).......2001-08-22

I found that "Nearby History" (2nd edition) was actually quite an informative book. I was looking for something in particular about my family, and I was at a complete loss as to how to find it. I haven't found it yet, but thanks to this book, I have made progress. I thought it'd be just for historians.
