Book Description

Here the local vigilante is a farmer's wife armed with a pistol and a Bible, the most senior member of the volunteer fire department is a cross-eyed butcher with one kidney and two ex-wives (both of whom work at the only gas station in town), and the back roads are haunted by the ghosts of children and farmers. Michael Perry loves this place. He grew up here, and now -- after a decade away -- he has returned.

Unable to polka or repair his own pickup, his farm-boy hands gone soft after years of writing, Mike figures the best way to regain his credibility is to join the volunteer fire department. Against a backdrop of fires and tangled wrecks, bar fights and smelt feeds, he tells a frequently comic tale leavened with moments of heartbreaking delicacy and searing tragedy.

2 out of 5 stars Truck much better.......2007-08-22

He's got talent as a writer BUT dead people, puke, and sappy back-where-I-belong speeches didn't do it for me.

3 out of 5 stars Garrison Keilor he ain't.......2007-08-03

Good reasons given for not wanting to live in the rural Middle West. No charm, even Lake Wobegone has more.

5 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-04-04

This was a great book. Some scenes left me teary-eyed from laughing, and some that were very poignant.
A nice reflection on life's up's & downs from a small town perspective.

4 out of 5 stars backporch stories.......2007-03-09

Nice adventure. Reminds me of sitting on a deck listening to a good storyteller-real stories. True to life. Honest. I felt the small town as many seperate tales as opposed to a story about a small town.
might be to real for some- but it portrays a stark reality for those of us who aren't exposed to the many ways life does happen. Enlightening and endearing.

5 out of 5 stars Introspective in the matters of the human psyche.......2007-01-31

I lived the first 30 years of my life less than 30 miles from New Auburn, Wisconsin. So when I fortuitously discovered that the author hailed from the same neck of the woods, I promptly purchased the book from Amazon.

When it comes to reading for pleasure I read at a snail's pace. A John Grisham novel typically takes me several weeks to read. By comparison, I actually read this book at record breaking speed. It was impossible for me to set this book down for long.

There were times when I was nearly rolling on the floor laughing but there were even more times when I literally shed a tear or two. Most books don't engage me emotionally to this depth but then again most books are not written by such an insightful person,
Especially when it comes to matters of human nature and mortality.

And yes, mortality is an issue that this author brings to the fore on many occasions. In fact, if I had to sum up a central reoccurring theme it would be this. We humans are on this planet for a very short time and are balancing on a very thin and precarious wire each and every day that we rise from our beds.

I never felt that the author was an especially cynical person but rather a realistic one who chose to contemplate death as he continued to learn how to help others to live. His choice of an altruistic occupation simply confirms the lesson that many wise persons have learned, that "there is more happiness in giving than in receiving."

This book moves quickly with plenty of realistic and graphic imagery of his experiences in the rescue field interacting with scores of colorful characters. The author is an excellent wordsmith and is incredibly introspective in the matters of the human psyche. I am hooked and intend on reading his other offerings.

The title of Living, Studying and Working in Italy says it all: this book is intended for would-be expatriates with an eye for Italy. The authors have both had extensive experience living and working in the Bel Paese--Neighbor was in Florence for four years while Larner still lives in Rome, where she is a journalist for Business Week. Together they have pooled their experiences and collective knowledge of living abroad to address the practical side of living, working, or studying in Italy.

The first thing you might notice about this book is that it lacks references to Italy's great art, popular tourist sites, and best hotels. But remember, this is no ordinary guidebook--leave the tourist stuff to others and let Neighbor and Larner take you on a tour of everyday life as an expatriate in Italy. Here you'll find information about taking language courses and teaching English, volunteering for archeological digs, and starting a business. There are plenty of practical tips about visas, banking, residency requirements, and--alas!--taxes. There are lists of language schools, volunteer opportunities, and internship programs as well as information about freelance, part-time, and full-time employment opportunities. In short, this guidebook extraordinaire might just be an expatriate's best friend in Italy.

Book Description

So, you want to move to Italy for six months but you don't speak the language well. How do you look for a job? Your heart is set on buying a farmhouse in Tuscany. What are the legal pitfalls to avoid? You'd like to study in Rome, but your college doesn't have a program. Which schools should you apply to? With all-new information on the Internet and on the effect of the conversion to the euro, this essential companion guide to Italy features - hundreds of addresses and Internet sites, from real estate agencies to job banks - details on visas, banking, taxes, and residency permits - freelance, seasonal, part-time, and full-time employment options - more than two hundred language schools, American colleges, and Italian universities Written by two seasoned expatriates, Living, Studying, and Working in Italy is packed with candid insider's tips and practical, up-to-date information for travelers of any age.

3 out of 5 stars Only Brushes the Surface.......2007-06-02

I moved to Italy to live, study and work, taking with me this book as the ultimate resource for an American looking to make a life there. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be the exhaustive guide I had hoped.
Not only did it brush the surface on important questions any American moving abroad would have (such as those addressing legal requirements, getting proper paperwork and visas to stay, finding work, etc.), I found it to actually contradict itself in the discussion of some important subjects.

I am afraid that whole-heartedly trusting this book to help you navigate through some of the legal implications of moving to Italy may result in much frustration. I also found the helpful lists (compilations of schools and universities, English-speaking organizations, etc.) to be less-than-comprehensive. These lists mainly focus on the big cities and American-draws (Rome, Florence and Milan).

This book is fine as a starter guide to help you to begin to plan, but it is not "everything you need to know."

5 out of 5 stars The Guru.......2007-04-19

This book arrived today, and I have read most of it already-- absolutely wonderful! It addresses answers to 98% of my questions, as well as issues I hadn't even thought about. There are also useful addresses and resources, as well as basic, but necessary tips, including how to convert measurements (for butter, sugar and clothing!), saints' days, and everyday etiquette (don't walk around your hosts' house barefoot!). How can someone who doesn't speak much Italian find a job? Which visa is actually right for you and what's the process? How do you prepare for your Italian job interview/write your resume? What's the garbage tax? What if you need emergency medical care? How do you get covered by Italy's public health care system? What is the proper way to go shopping in Italy? I've spent several months living/studying/traveling in Europe before, and I wish I had access to this book earlier. Full of tips, tricks, and tools to make you a successful individual in Italy (and beyond). Go eat some pasta and read up!

5 out of 5 stars Italy made easy.......2006-01-30

To those who are either considering moving to Italy or just going for vacation, this is the book for you. It provides not only the basic information, but also answers questions that you would not normally consider or even think of. It also provides valuable information about embassies/consulates, education, and every day life. Even as a seasoned traveler, I found this book very useful, as I plan my relocation to Italy. It is an asset to any traveler's library.

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough and helpful.......2004-12-17

This book is great because it gives you things from an American perspective. I've lived in Italy before on a study abroad program, so I was familiar with some things, but the lists of contact information alone are enough reason to buy this book. It covers everything from student visas to getting dual citizenship and from teaching ESL to starting your own business. A must read for anyone thinking about moving to Italy.

5 out of 5 stars What great ideas! Maybe I won't be homeless after all..........2003-07-25

This book is literally a goldmine of useful information. I had no idea that the university system began at different times then the university system in the States... no wonder I didn't meet any cute Italian boys until two months into my stay! Hehe. But beyond that, I would recommend this book to anyone who, like myself, dreams of one day calling Italia home. I went through some of the avenues listed in the book (i.e., post-graduate study abroad, mingling with the locals, etc.) before even knowing this book existed, so the authors must be doing something right!

Peter Maass from the center of the nightmare in Bosnia, a war correspondent's montage of images - eerie, grotesque, ironic, angry, absurd. A Serb and Muslim, friends before the war, exchanging gossip via shortwave radio hours before they will try to kill each other. The Serbian president coolly denying reports of atrocities that have been witnessed by hundreds. A battlefield doctor performing miracles of surgery without anesthetic. Drivers without headlights gambling their lives in the darkness of no-man's-land while schoolchildren scamper across Sniper Alley. The author takes us with him into the minefields of modern war with a fierce, vivid, and personal book.

Book Description

Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize

Peter Maass went to the Balkans as a reporter at the height of the nightmarish war there, but this book is not traditional war reportage. Maass examines how an ordinary Serb could wake up one morning and shoot his neighbor, once a friend--then rape that neighbor's wife. He conveys the desperation that makes a Muslim beg the United States to bomb his own city in order to end the misery. And Maass does not falter at the spectacle of U.N. soldiers shining searchlights on fleeing refugees--who are promptly gunned down by snipers waiting in the darkness. Love Thy Neighbor gives us an unflinching vision of a late-20th-century hell that is also a scathing inquiry into the worst extremes of human nature. Like Michael Herr's Dispatches (also available in Vintage paperback), it is an utterly gripping book that will move and instruct readers for years to come.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Incomplete by all measures!.......2007-09-12

"Love they neighbor" caught my eye as it was supposed to cover a topic of which I have great interest. I have devoured about 20 books on the most recent Balkan's war and I have actually traveled to the region on two occasions since fighting started/ended. I found this book to be a failure both artistically and in the realm of journalistic confirmation..
It is not the author's biases which I have issue with; it is much more the child like way that issues are presented. The author makes the history of the region seem to be irrelevant and then makes snap judgment. As we know from WWI, WWII, the Cold War etc...the history of the Balkans makes it a unique geographic area. To ignore the expansion of the Ottomans, the 1st and 2nd Balkans War as well as WWII....well it just shows the "Ugly American" side of this Author." I would go into more detail, however I would say that besides the grandiose vocabulary used in the book....I would rate this piece at the 9th grade level....at best. There are far more interesting and intriguing pieces written on this era.. I found this book far too simple and bereft of history which makes the writings irrelevant. If you want to read a far better book I recommend. " My War is gone and I miss it so...." Or any book written by Misha Glenny more worthy of a read.

5 out of 5 stars I have a confession to make..........2006-07-28

I have a confession to make - I am guilty of ignorance.

While in 1992 I was taking my first trip to Europe, falling in love for the first time, getting my introduction to Pentecostalism and learning to live, people were being exterminated only several hundred miles away from me.
While I was going into my fourth year of high school education in Bulgaria, boys and girls my age were being raped and tortured and murdered and it took me 15 years to find that out. How is it that I knew nothing about that war? How is it I never paid attention to the news, never took interest in what was happing in Bosnia? How? How come I turned a blind eye to the grizzly events occurring in a land where people spoke Slavic language similar to my own, had features similar to mine, shared history similar to the one of my county? How can I have been so ignorant of the genocide in Bosnia?

Then, in the winter of 1992 I came to the United States and looking back now I find I wasn't the only one guilty of ignorance. For three years (1992-1995) United Nations, countries like Britain, France, Russia and of course, the USA, looked to resolved the conflict by ignoring the direct problem in the region. Peaceful solution is what everyone was talking about and looking for, and all the while men, women, and children died by torture, by fire, by knives to their throats. Over 200,000 people. 200,000 died in this conflict and having read Peter Maass' book I feel disgusted with myself, with humanity in general.

I suspect there were hundreds of other conflicts that occurred and I missed. I know there were many more that history sheltered away from humanity and perhaps I'll never learn about their victims, but having read this book and having learned of the dangerous games politicians and people with power played, I'm left with a nauseating feeling of shame. Shame for being a human and for possessing the realization that evil is something people grow inside, something they cultivate and feed of. For all of our 100,000 years of civilization we have nothing to show except death, destruction and deceit. Is this what we should be proud of? Is this the meaning of life?

I recommend this book to everyone. It's hard to find stories out there that are so open, so raw, so real in their context that make readers seriously wonder what society, civilization, morality and ethics really mean. Mr. Maass, thank you for being so honest.

-by Simon Cleveland

4 out of 5 stars A little editing would do wonders.......2004-12-16

This is a fascinating book. Unfortunately the author has a habit of referencing other books (most notably Black Lamb Grey Falcon and Catch-22) far too often, usually just when you've lost youself in the book. His insight and explanations of what he experienced are great but they often stray back and forth in time. This sometimes gets a little hard to follow. All of these could be cured with just a little editing. Other than that the only problem I had with the book is that I wanted to know more of his experiences.

5 out of 5 stars An astounding read..........2004-07-25

This astonishing book tells the story of a journalist who was sent to Bosnia to cover the Serb invasion of that country in the early 1990's. The story the author has to tell is amazing, sad, and troublesome. It is absolutely incredible that this could happen in 'civilized' Europe in the 1990's, and no one intervened to stop it. The author tells the stories that you did not read in the newspapers, and gives the perspective of someone who suffered with the Bosnians. A highly engrossing, highly recommended read!

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, shocking, and simply terrifying!.......2003-09-20

This book showed how terrible the War in Bosnia really was. The media failed to show us the bloodbath that it became. I am sorry that we as a nation did not do more to help the Muslims in Bosnia. Whether we are Christian, Jew, Muslim, or Atheist we have a moral responsibility to help defend a small country from genocide. The shocking truth in this book opened my eyes but it also deeply depressed me. One is tempted to give up hope in the face of such monstrous reality. We live in a very unpredictable, hostile, and politically unstable world and Peter Maass shows just how evil it can get.

Book Description

Celebrated author Ted Williams' account of his lifelong engagement with traditional wisdom, spiritual knowledge, and his search for higher consciousness among the Six Nations of Iroquois.

Big Medicine from Six Nations is a series of reminiscences and essays by the late Ted Williams on the themes of "medicine" (physical/spiritual/psychic healing). Williams intertwines the lore and lifeways of his Tuscarora upbringing, illustrating the dynamic encounter of tradition and innovation at the heart of contemporary Haudenosaunee culture. At the same time, he writes with an irreverence, irony, and good humor unmistakably his own. Colored by his wry wit, Big Medicine from Six Nations amply fulfills the promise of its title. It offers a fascinating view not only of herbal medicine but also of prayers, omens, feasts, vision quests, sweat lodges, spirits, and the sacred teachings of the Great Law of the Great Peace. But readers will find that there is more to this book about the "spiritual mechanics" of humankind writ large.

"This is not the life I imagined I would have." So laments Prudence Emerson, an inquisitive, distinctly non-prudent 13-year-old girl from Massachusetts who wants to be cheerful but who must, along with her Tory family, live in fear of her Patriot neighbors in the months leading up to the American Revolution. Like the other books in the Dear America series, Ann Turner's Love Thy Neighbor is recounted in diary form--a fictional diary that reveals the innermost thoughts of a young woman while painting a vivid picture of the times in which she lived. The innate complexities of the conflicts between Tories and Patriots are clearly presented, and readers will certainly gain a new understanding of the challenges of overthrowing foreign rule and beginning a democracy from the rarely explored perspective of a family "on the wrong side" of the war. Readers will also learn about daily colonial life--when bacon came from the pigs one owned, where ink was made from ink powder or maple bark, where girls were expected to embroider, wear corsets, scrub floors, go to church on Sundays, and generally mind their manners. Pru is a strong, spirited heroine whom readers will cheer on as she endures alienation from her Patriot friends, the sickness of her little sister, rising hostility, and ultimately, being uprooted from the home she loves to flee the danger of war.

A note in the back further illuminates life in the Colonies, as do historical illustrations and a note from the author about her own family connection to this turbulent time. Two other fictional diaries set during the Revolutionary War are Kristiana Gregory's Dear America book The Winter of Red Snow: The Revolutionary War Diary of Abigail Jane Stewart and Barry Denenberg's My Name is America book The Journal of William Thomas Emerson: A Revolutionary War Patriot. (Ages 9 to 14) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

The drama of the American Revolution is brought to life through the eyes of a Prudence Emerson, who tells the story from the rarely heard perspective of a Tory. In the winter of 1775, as Pru's neighbors prepare to fight the British for independence, Pru is torn between her family's sworn allegiance to the King, and her loneliness for the friends who abandon her for the Patriot cause. When the first battle at Bunker Hill explodes, Pru must find the courage to weather the turbulent times. Ann Turner captures the the other side of America's fight for freedom with realism and sensitivity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Poor Pru.......2007-05-12

For starters, let me just say two little things! I read this book over and over again. I can't help it! It is that good!
I can really relate to Pru when it comes to feeling left out because you feel a certain way! People whom she thought were her friends only ended up stabbing her in the back! What could ever be worse than that? Her so called 'friends' did what they did just because she did not want a war to happen. "Love Thy Neighbor" is a very sad book and very good.
I even read this book to my friend Ben in 7th grade. I had to help him read it because he had Dyslexia at the time. [I bet he still does.] Anyway, no one had forced me to help him, but I really wanted to help him overcome it. I bought this book for him at Borders as a gift, then began to read it to him in Civics class. He loved it!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2006-04-05

This book was overall very good. I enjoyed it because I found the American Revolution interesting the way it shaped our country and nation. I especially liked it because Prudence is my age, 13 or 14 years old and is the 2nd-oldest. I liked it because she had to take care of her younger siblings, as I do (I have 1 younger sister and a dog). What I did not understand was that they did not really mention what day it began and what exactly happened. But outside that, it was a good book and I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done.......2006-02-20

In 1774, amidst all the hate and anger on both the Patriot and Tory sides of the war, Prudence Emerson's family stands strong. Their beliefs keep them true to the Crown-and also puts them in a state of grave danger.
Pru confides in her diary about all the hate and anger directed toward her family and familes like hers, simply for their beliefs.
In most Revolutionary War books, the main topic or character in a Patriot or around Patriot beliefs. It's new and refreshing to hear the opinions from the other side of the story.

5 out of 5 stars great book ..... quick sender.......2005-10-04

Thanks.... book is in good condition... Quick sender and
it was a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2005-03-03

I loved this book because it shifted my perspective a little.
Most people just think of the Revolutionary War as people fighting the king. But what happened to all of the people who fought for the king? We almost never hear their story.
You read as a town is split down the middle, friendships are divided, even the schoolhouse becomes segregated. The people who are Patriots are yelling obscene things at the Tories, burning down their houses, even mocking them in church while the service is going on. Her mother is a midwife who even has to decide if she will help mothers who are Patriots.
This is a good book to read about people who were prejudiced and a little unfair.

4 out of 5 stars The only professional work on Lumbee history.......2003-03-17

Evans is the only author ever to conduct historical research on the ancestors of the present-day Lumbee tribe at a professional level of ability and accomplishment. Other authors writing on the Lumbees have been either anthropologists (such as Sider and Blu) or else amateurs in either status and/or ability. Evans researched a plethora of primary sources, and his historical fact-finding will probably never be surpassed. Evans has written a competent and well-sourced narrative.

But there are serious flaws. By beginning the book with the murder of the Lowry relatives, Evans contextualizes the gang's story as a revenge tale. The book's organization thus obscures the fact that the Lowrys had already committed two murders themselves, prior to their enemies' murder of their father. Obviously there is more going on than a simple revenge motive. Evans fails to make clear that the Lowry gang episode is really about Radical political terrorism in opposition to the Conservative political terrorism of the KKK. While Evans does report elements of the Lowrys' political motivations (although he missed a number of sources that would have expanded this aspect), he emphasizes the revenge motivation. Ultimately, Evans has succumbed to and is reproducing stereotypes of "Indian" violence. Evans never acknowledges that there is little to no evidence that the Lowrys saw themselves as Indian warriors. In fact, the Lowry gang was a multiracial political coalition--not an outbreak of ethnic conflict.

Those caveats aside, this is the most professional work ever done on Lumbee history, and certainly the best researched. All the pieces of the story are here, and it is a fascinating story indeed.

The Neighbor is a book of portraits and portraiture. Like the eccentric and mysteriously heroic citizens of E. A. Robinson's Tilbury Town, Collier's figures haunt a startlingly familiar neighborhood. In clear, rich language, Collier reveals the complexities that emerge from his characters' seemingly uneventful lives.

    Book Description

This book is an exposé of a secret American operation during World War II to seize 4,000 Germans from Latin America and intern them in camps in the Texas desert. Rather than Nazi spies and saboteurs, they turned out to be a broad range of German immigrants, even Jewish refugees, most of whom posed no danger to national security. Research in seven countries reveals the diplomatic intrigues and human impact of a misguided policy that offers important lessons about US relations with Latin America, the failure to rescue victims of the Holocaust, and the treatment of civilians in wartime.

5 out of 5 stars Learning from the past.......2003-11-20

Nazis and Good Neighbors is a meticulously researched account of U.S. involvement in Latin America during World War II. It lucidly explains the motivation of the United States in arranging and financing the imprisonment and deportation of thousands of Axis citizens who were legal residents in Central and South America.

Max Paul Friedman combines historical facts with an engaging style. The result is riveting reading. The impact this secret program had on Latin American governments and the people involved is clear. The parallel to U.S. policies toward "enemy aliens"today, is unmistakable.

4 out of 5 stars King of the Delawares: Teedyuscung.......2000-04-04

Anthony F. C. Wallace, like his father, Paul A. W. Wallace, is an acknowledged authority on the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware, and this book is one of his finest. It tells the story of the enigmatic Teedyuscung fairly, accurately, and (at times) grippingly.

Interestingly, the flow of the book reflects the uneven, back-and-forth fortunes of Teedyuscung and his people in eighteenth century America, which can be somewhat dizzying for some readers. But it is well worth the effort, and the persevering reader will be rewarded.

The maps that are included in the volume are so helpful that one might wish there were more, but that fault is easily overlooked.
