Book Description

A riveting memoir from the Navy doctor praised as "Hero, M.D." on the cover of Newsweek.

Cdr. Richard Jadick's story is one of the most extraordinary to come out of the war in Iraq. At thirty-eight, the last place the Navy doctor was expected to be was on the front lines. He was too old to be called up, but not too old to volunteer. In November 2004, with the military reeling from an acute doctor shortage, Jadick chose to accompany the First Battalion, Eighth Marine Regiment (the "1/8") to Iraq. During the Battle of Fallujah, Jadick and his team worked tirelessly and courageously around the clock to save their troops in the worst street fighting Americans had faced since Vietnam. It is estimated that without Jadick at the front, the Marines would have lost an additional thirty men. Of the hundreds of men he treated, only one died after reaching a hospital. This is the inspiring story of his decision to enter into the fray, a fascinating glimpse into wartime triage, and a compelling account of courage under fire.

2 out of 5 stars But Enough About Me..........2007-09-20

Having read the compelling Newsweek article that became the catalyst for the book, I was expecting much more than what was finally produced. As another reviewer mentioned, too much of the book was spent on CDR Jadick's personal history and trite stories about everyday life downrange. (Though the latrine story was pretty doggone funny...)
Perhaps it's difficult to produce a tome about one aspect of one battle - but others have managed. Those who have, however, are usually historians and not docs.
A bad book review should be understood for what it is. A book review. This is not a criticism of the author's valor or medical skill, which is worthy of every accolade that's been bestowed.

1 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2007-08-16

Does not deserve to share a shelf with medical accomplishments such as Atul Gawande's Better or Complications. The book is filled with trite sentences and tainted with the robotic marine mentality. Slow and reads like you yourself are in hell.

5 out of 5 stars You are there in the Minds and Hearts........2007-07-16

Feel the heat, taste the dust, squint in the sun while horror is delivered to you on the hour.

5 out of 5 stars A Jewel of a Novel.......2007-07-01

having been in the Navy I found this book a fine read. His explanation of the Marine/Navy world was perfect. Corpmen are always highly respected by all. Beyond that it shows the great men and women and their beliefs toward our wonderful country. Soemtimes when we see the faults by politicians and others and we wonder how we will make it as a country all we have to do is look toward the fine men and women that serve us and our country. Let our hearts go out and let us in the future be ready to help them in all they will need.

5 out of 5 stars On Call In Hell by Cdr. Richard Jadick.......2007-06-25

The book was riveting...hard to put down. I read it in two days, mainly because I wanted to experience what Marines and Navy Corpsmen experience in combat, and I certainly did and then some. My son's heroic rescue on Thanksgiving Day, 2004 was clearly documented, as was his death in combat the next day. Kudos to the corpsmen who literally go through the gates of hell to rescue a wounded Marine!

Book Description

From the era of slavery to the present day, the first full history of black America’s shocking mistreatment as unwilling and unwitting experimental subjects at the hands of the medical establishment.

Medical Apartheid is the first and only comprehensive history of medical experimentation on African Americans. Starting with the earliest encounters between black Americans and Western medical researchers and the racist pseudoscience that resulted, it details the ways both slaves and freedmen were used in hospitals for experiments conducted without their knowledge—a tradition that continues today within some black populations. It reveals how blacks have historically been prey to grave-robbing as well as unauthorized autopsies and dissections. Moving into the twentieth century, it shows how the pseudoscience of eugenics and social Darwinism was used to justify experimental exploitation and shoddy medical treatment of blacks, and the view that they were biologically inferior, oversexed, and unfit for adult responsibilities. Shocking new details about the government’s notorious Tuskegee experiment are revealed, as are similar, less-well-known medical atrocities conducted by the government, the armed forces, prisons, and private institutions.

The product of years of prodigious research into medical journals and experimental reports long undisturbed, Medical Apartheid reveals the hidden underbelly of scientific research and makes possible, for the first time, an understanding of the roots of the African American health deficit. At last, it provides the fullest possible context for comprehending the behavioral fallout that has caused black Americans to view researchers—and indeed the whole medical establishment—with such deep distrust. No one concerned with issues of public health and racial justice can afford not to read Medical Apartheid, a masterful book that will stir up both controversy and long-needed debate.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Clear.......2007-09-19

One of my best friends bought me this book after I sent her Jayme's online newsletter...pretty powerful newsletter, I'd say! I read this book daily now and cannot believe the content and context of the information it constantly imparts to me; it is enjoyable beyond what I could have believed. Every paragraph has so far resonated with me and is the direction I have been wanting to go; and now I know I have a scout who has gone out there and blazed this trail and come back inside to write about it! This is a generous woman! Having met Jayme at several yoga studio events, I know Jayme lives what she writes and has an energy of such integrity around her. For me, that counts for everything. The cleanliness, clarity, strength and beauty of this writing portrays who Jayme is, and I can't say enough about that level and depth of life. It is awesome to find it outside of oneself on the pages of a book as grande as this beautiful book is. She has excellent taste in real life (by the choices of her teachers and masters), in my opinion, and I am happy to turn the pages of this book slowly and deliberately and find support on "how to do a life well lived". This is the perfect book for me. Having just bought a new space in L.A., I will use this book to go forward on discovering who the new me is! Thank you, J. And thank you, Sydney, for the book!

5 out of 5 stars I simply love it!.......2007-08-15

Covering the depth and breadth of feng shui from the inside out, Jayme's thorough understanding of energy makes my efforts fun and amazingly enlightening. Oh my gosh, it works! I gladly decluttered the other feng shui books and that silly money toad, and follow Jayme's teaching exclusively. I am thrilled with the daily insights as well as the infusion of revitalizing energy in my life. This is one of those rare, truly life-transforming books, and I'm a five-star fan! Thank you again, Jayme, for your beautiful, inspiring book!

5 out of 5 stars This is useful when used in context.......2007-05-07

I really love the ideas in this book! I am a strong Christian, so some of the ideas are a little odd, but overall the book makes a lot of sense. Generally it will create negative energy if you stick your finger in an electrical outlet. A lot of the stuff is just common sense, but I really love the colors and the ideas they give on laying out rooms and putting your space together.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-04-19

This book is an excellent beginner's guide to Feng Shui. It covers the bagua, and gives excellent tips on how to energize your space with things you already have. It also gives a basic space clearing technique. I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-04-05

I have to admit it, I purchased this book mainly for the pictures. I find photos of well-laid-out rooms inspiring. HOWEVER, I am recommending this book because of its incredible CONTENT. Jayme Barrett lays the subject matter out so perfectly. It's like a step-by-step manual, only much more beautifully presented. Oh, and the pictures lived up to my expectations as well!

I thought this book was very informative and helpful in preparing me for the CPC Exam.I liked the Cd-Rom which was included because that helped me monitor my own progress in reference to what i learned from the material in the book and also if I could complete the exam in the time allotted for me to take it.I would recommend future exam books like these to others who may be taking the same exam in the future.

This book helped me a great deal to study for my final in the PMCC course. I would reccomend in highly.

4 out of 5 stars Great practice.......2007-03-14

This book truly helped me prepare for the AAPC National exam. The book provides you with 2 different practice exams that are almost equivalent to the questions on the actual exam. Time is a factor when you are actually taking the exam. You are provided 5 hours for 150 questions, and although that sounds like alot of time, it really is not. As this book comes with a CD that times you while taking the practice tests, I feel that it helped me get a better feel of how much time is really required to complete the exam. I passed the exam that I took in Feb 07 and I honestly feel that this book contributed to my passing.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A useful text for western students.......2005-11-08

Traditionally, ayurveda has been taught orally, with reference to ancient texts like the works of Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata; references that are still used today. These writings, which are believed to date thousands of years, contain the eternal and universal principles of the natural science of ayurveda; however they also contain therapies and lifestyle prescriptions which are hopelessly archaic; and materia medica which are no longer accessible (e.g. opium and camel's urine!). With the spread of ayurveda to the West, there emerged a great need for a text that not only catered to the western mode of thinking and education, but that also made connections between the ayurvedic view of anatomy and physiology, and that of the West. This book attempts to do just that.

Dr.Vasant Lad is in the forefront of Vaidyas (ayurvedic practitioners) who have made ayurvedic education available to the West. He started teaching ayurveda in the USA in 1980, and has produced many prominent writers and educators on the subject. His previous books include the popular Ayurveda; The Science of Self-Healing; and The Yoga of Herbs, co-written with Dr. David Frawley, a groundbreaking book introducing the concepts of ayurvedic herbology to the western public.

This Textbook of Ayurveda comes as more in-depth ayurvedic education programmes develop in the West. It contains the necessary foundation for the understanding of a medical model far removed from the western allopathic paradigm. To understand and practise ayurveda, one literally needs to adopt, to immerse oneself in, a completely different perspective. Dr.Lad's book contains chapters on the Six Philosophies which underpin ayurveda, from the unthinkably ancient Sankhya philosophy of creation, which also forms the basis of Buddhism and some aspects of Yoga; to the Nyaya science of logic; to Yoga itself, the profound science of psychology and human potential.

Then we explore the system of 20 qualities of nature; the five elements; the three humours (Doshas) and their 15 subtypes; the concept of Agni or Digestive Fire; the Dhatus or body tissues; the Srotas or body channels; Ojas, Tejas, and Prana or the subtle humours; and Digestion and Nutrition. Each aspect is explained and related back to western anatomy, physiology and pathology. The important connection is also made between each aspect and the mind, which in ayurveda is considered a distinct but interdependent part of the body. There are copious appendices and tables on the various systems, ayurvedic properties of food, and other useful information.

A notable feature is the high quality of production. This is refreshing - and I would say necessary, if ayurvedic education is to be taken seriously by mainstream medicine. To be frank, I am fed up of poorly written, edited, designed and produced books from India. Even so-called textbooks are appallingly arranged, sometimes with no indexes or useful means of finding information. This book is clearly illustrated with line drawings, attractively designed, and printed on good paper. Two of the book's editors are ayurveda and Sanskrt instructors in New Zealand. If such talents were used more often in the editing and production of ayurvedic books, the credibility and reputation of ayurvedic education and publications would no doubt increase.

But does the book really deliver the goods? In my opinion, a lot of the correlations with western anatomy and physiology are speculative, and Dr.Lad should admit they are so. A lot of the material, while interesting, is simply not standard ayurvedic training, traditional or otherwise - and therefore misleading. If, instead of trying to pass off these wishy-washy correlations, Dr.Lad had worked on better translating and elucidating the traditional texts and principles, I believe the book would have more usefully served the growing interest in ayurveda as a clinical medical system. I feel that, while the book is insufficiently academic and credible for serious students of ayurveda, it still serves as a good introduction for the intelligent western reader.

5 out of 5 stars A "Complete Guide".......2003-07-18

I've recently purchased several ayurvedic books and will be returning most of them now. This book has everything. I MUST have. It is very thorough and extremely interesting. Not just a rehashing of information found elsewhere. If you only have one book - get this one!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the Ayurvedic student!.......2003-01-05

Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc.... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Reading this book is like talking to a geek. If you enjoy conversations with geeks and learn a lot from them, this is the Chinese medicine book for you. If you tend to find such conversations confusing, dense, and boring, well, that's probably what you'll think of _The Web That Has No Weaver_ as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent TCM Text for those with Scientfic Background.......2007-07-09

I'm surprised by some of the highly critical reviews here. I think this book is a wonderfully informative, eye-opening tome of an introduction to traditional chinese medicine. *If* you have a strong western science backgroud. For laypeople, it is a poor choice.

But the information you need is there, organized logically, and from a very analytical western scientific standpoint. The discussion of tcm as an entirely different science is particularly interesting.

Ted J. Kaptchuk's "The Web That Has No Weaver" is a fancinating and informative read that challanges the layman's understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine without getting bogged down by cultural discrpancies or technical jargon. Reading through the original text is fun and comprehensive; but for a deeper understanding of contemporary issues as they relate to the topic, the reader can look to the detailed footnotes and appendices.

Book Description

This practical approach to training students for a career in medical coding begins with an introduction to Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), followed by in-depth explanations of the sections found in the CPT manual. Several chapters, organized to follow the CPT codes by body system, introduce various procedures and demonstrate how to code each one. Practice exercises following each step of information and at the end of each chapter reinforce important concepts and allow users to check their comprehension. Unit II covers the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD 9-CM), and Unit III offers information about third-party reimbursement. Appendices provide the official ICD-9-CM guidelines for coding and reporting, answers to the in-text exercises, the documentation guidelines for E/M services, a quick guide to HIPAA, and Alpha II iCoder exercises.

3 out of 5 stars This book is for students with an instructor.......2007-06-19

This book is great on information and the way they explain everything. The problem is there is no answer keys on the chapter review questions. This is hard if you are doing this as a self study. You have no way of checking your answers. I had to enroll through evolve's on line self study program to get the answers. The cost was $39.95. This on line self study is well worth the money. They ask questions that is not in the book. There is a workbook that goes with this book. The workbook is good as far as giving you practice exercises. The problem is you only get answers on the odd number questions. You have no idea if the even number questions are right.

Book Description

A thrilling historical account of the worst cholera outbreak in Victorian London-and a brilliant exploration of how Dr. John Snow's solution revolutionized the way we think about disease, cities, science, and the modern world.

From the dynamic thinker routinely compared to Malcolm Gladwell, E. O. Wilson, and James Gleick, The Ghost Map is a riveting page-turner with a real-life historical hero that brilliantly illuminates the intertwined histories of the spread of viruses, rise of cities, and the nature of scientific inquiry. These are topics that have long obsessed Steven Johnson, and The Ghost Map is a true triumph of the kind of multidisciplinary thinking for which he's become famous-a book that, like the work of Jared Diamond, presents both vivid history and a powerful and provocative explanation of what it means for the world we live in.

The Ghost Map takes place in the summer of 1854. A devastating cholera outbreak seizes London just as it is emerging as a modern city: more than 2 million people packed into a ten-mile circumference, a hub of travel and commerce, teeming with people from all over the world, continually pushing the limits of infrastructure that's outdated as soon as it's updated. Dr. John Snow-whose ideas about contagion had been dismissed by the scientific community-is spurred to intense action when the people in his neighborhood begin dying. With enthralling suspense, Johnson chronicles Snow's day-by-day efforts, as he risks his own life to prove how the epidemic is being spread.

When he creates the map that traces the pattern of outbreak back to its source, Dr. Snow didn't just solve the most pressing medical riddle of his time. He ultimately established a precedent for the way modern city-dwellers, city planners, physicians, and public officials think about the spread of disease and the development of the modern urban environment.

The Ghost Map is an endlessly compelling and utterly gripping account of that London summer of 1854, from the microbial level to the macrourban-theory level-including, most important, the human level.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid History of Science Book.......2007-09-07

This is the story of Dr. John Snow and the development of modern epidemiology and germ theory. As a history of science read, this book is very good. It has lots of drama and reads like a mystery. I did learn about Snows research into anesthesia, something I didn't know about. Most of the book centers around the cholera outbreak in London and Snow's work to counter the generally accepted miasma theory. This is a great book for young researchers to see how prevailing paradigms can be completely wrong, yet generally accepted and even unquestioned.

4 out of 5 stars Thinking outside the box.......2007-09-06

This is a very interesting book on several levels. It is a fairly detailed case study of a cholera outbreak in London in 1854 and of the attempts of two dedicated men, one an esteemed physician and the other a neighborhood Anglican priest, to determine the cause, which turned out to be contaminated water. Once they do determine the cause, they run headlong into the established scientific orthodoxies of the day, which center around the "miasma" theory, a vague notion that such epidemics are caused by the overall environment in which they occur, sometimes the air, sometimes living conditions, and even, in a classic case of blaming the victims, by the characters of the victims. Eventually the scientific establishment is won over to the waterborne theory, but not after long hard fights, and not until after many more deaths could have been prevented.

The central points that I got out of this book are these:

1) Pre-scientific modes of thinking prevailed in the scientific establishment until well into the 19th century, or 1854 as we see here. The idea of empirically testing hypotheses seems not to have occurred to many scientists of the day.

2) The importance of "thinking outside the box," of not accepting conventional or established ideas just because they are established.

3) Revolutions in scientific thinking, or paradigm shifts, as Thomas Kuhn called them, rarely occur easily. Often the revolutionary idea is ignored, then ridiculed, then fought against, then eventually accepted, often by a later generation which had not been schooled in the conventional ways of thinking.

All told an interesting book, well recommended. I did not give it 5 stars because the author can at times move away from the immediate narrative to more abstract matters that can often be tedious. The book can be redundant as well. But altogether a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating topic, redundant writing style, too little about the map.......2007-07-28

I will omit a synopsis of the book. This book has been assigned as incoming Freshman reading for my local university, thus my specific purpose in reading it. The general idea of an "historical medical mystery" presented in non-fiction form was a very reasonable one for a book. The quest for the origin of the Cholera epidemic in 1854 London by Whitehead and Snow was presented in a an exciting captivating way. The writing style was painful for me. Quite a bit of the material was repeated over and over in subsequent chapters. When I put the book down and picked it up again, I would wonder if I had lost my place (ie, a deja vu-type of experience) as I was certain I had read the material previously. Although there is some info on the making of the map, it was a small part of the book's focus. Truly, my greatest objection is the way the editor allowed the author to roam wildly. I believe this book will be viewed as a painful reading experience for 18 yo college students, not one that would offer stimulation for future reading of medical mysteries nor historical fiction. In general, I could not recommend this book to the general public; those interested in medicine/epidemics/certain mysteries, might enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A rare find.......2007-07-24

This book was one of those rare finds tht do not come along very often. I read it in 2 days - I simply could not put it down. In the beginning of the book, when he was describing London in the early 19th century, I was reading along while crinkling my nose and whispering "oh my gosh" the whole time. I was simply entranced.

Johnson did start to pontificate a bit at the end - this could easily have been left out, and frankly I finally gave up reading all of his views at the end of the book. But, that is certainly no reason to miss this fantastic read ... and gritty and real historical view of what 19th century cities were TRULY like.

Overall a fantastic book!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful storyteller but with a broken crystal ball perhaps.......2007-07-09

This was a very well written book about a subject that could cause stomaches to turn. The way the author told the story kept it interesting in spite of the sordid details of the disease and it's ravages on the human body.

Several have commented about the ending of the book where the author takes out his crystal ball and sort of predicts the future of the urban environment, but even that I found fascinating, if not a bit hopeful.

He did touch on the use of fossil fuels, but he seems to think that term only means gasoline ( his mention of New York City being the greenest city on the planet since it's citizens have a low gasoline consumption ) when in fact fossil fuels include, but are not limited to; fuel oil, natural gas, coal, gasoline, diesel and turbine fuels. All of which New Yorkers are huge consumers.

If the cost of energy becomes as expensive as some pessimists suggest, then I think the huge cities will once again become dark, dirty places which will lose huge numbers of citizens.

This book also makes me wonder if 200 years from now algore will be today's Dr. John Snow or Edwin Chadwick in regards to Gullible Warming. My belief is that he and the other Gullible Warming fanatics will be no different than those who subscribed to the "miasma theory of disease" as detailed in this book.

A great read, highly recommended!!

After purchasing the instructor's manual to check my answers, I found errors in every chapter!! From spelling to incorrect percentage amounts. I found myself editing the entire time to find their errors which contradict their text. When I got answers that were not an option in the multiple choice exercises, I would reference the book and the textbook would say I was correct, and the workbook did not. Not worth the money or the time. Extremely exhausting.

I took a night course which used this textbook. The instructor who is a certified coder and is an instructor at other institutions found MANY misleading instructions. You can be told to do something one way in the book but in real life at a billing job, you would have to do it another way. Also, we found many contradicting statements. They say one thing but do something totally different in their examples. It's really not worth the money.

The book is made to sound as if it would be all you need to become a Medical Billing/Health Insurance specialist. Not a chance. You will need the most current coding manuals to even attempt to complete this course. And even then without the answers you have no way to check your progress.
