Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Good source for home education.......2005-08-12
I have made use of this approach. One does not have to stick to a strict structure of cirriculum to homeschool. By substitution and research you can design your home school year by year. The goal is to get our children to heaven and in so teaching the virtues and religious academia is necessary. The literary genius of yesteryear are necessary to teach the morals and virtues we want our children to hold on to. Mrs. Berquist has formulated a good outline for us to follow and use each year of teaching. Nothing is unattainable with God's help.
Wonderful Tool for Home Educators.......2002-08-22
I read this book before I started homeschooling three years ago and not only did it give me wonderful, creative and innovative ideas, but it helped give me the confidence I needed to homeschool my children myself. It also introduced me to the whole concept of the classical learning method which now has become a lifestyle in our home much to the benefit of our children.
This is what homeschooling is about!.......2002-04-10
Generally, we choose non fiction books that present perspectives similar to those we already hold. This was the case for me when I bought Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum. I knew that the author was a respected educator, with a solid Catholic background. What I didn't know at the time was just what "classical curriculum" entailed.
This was one of those books that opened my mind. At first, reading her recommendations to focus on classical material made me uneasy. It didn't seem relevant to modern education. As I continued through the book, however, two things struck me: first, that classical education is far more relevant than my first instinct had told me. Second, Berquist's ideas are helpful in much more substantial ways than curriculum suggestions.
More than simply a reading list or a pre-designed curriculum, the book offers guidelines and ideas for how to develop your own educational approach. Whether or not you use her classical material recommendations, her ideas can give you solid assistance in planning a syllabus and schedule that conforms to your family's abilities, scheduling needs, and educational objectives. The "classical" suggestions are the bonus.
Whether or not you plan to use a mostly classical approach, this book is worth reading and re-reading at curriculum planning time.
very helpful, a good jumping off point.......2002-04-06
If you are looking for general information about classical education, what it is and why one would want to use this approach, you won't find it in this book. This is definitely written for people who've already researched it and are now making up their own curriculum. The book lists books and curriculum that Ms. Berquist recommends for all subjects, organized in a per grade level format. It is well written, easy to follow, and makes designing your own curriculum seem not only possible but easy. The author inputs her personal opinions about various books and curriculum, stating what has worked for her and what did not; the majority of the content is a description of what did work for her. I love reading homeschooling parent's opinions of what worked, what didn't and why; I learn more from their opinions than from reading marketing materials that the companies write.
The listings of books and curriculum is limited to just what Berquist personally used. For example, one math curriculum company seems to be used throughout all the grade levels. If this book were truly for someone to design their own curriculum, I would think that if they tried Ms. Berquist's recommended math curriculum and the family did not like it, that they would need some help and guidance to find a different curriculum. The book would live up to its title if it contained a variety of different curriculum company options with Ms. Berquist's opinions of the pro's and con's of each. In this case the reader would have to turn to other sources to find ideas for books or curriculum that may fit their own custom-designed curriculum for their child. (However, that is the beauty of designing your own curriculum, that no two programs will be identical, right?) For anyone looking for that type of review, for additional information, I suggest two (non-religious) books: Rebecca Rupp's The Complete Home Learning Source Book. Or for less curriculum but more books and materials that you can truly custom-create your own curriculum, I suggest The Home School Source Book by Jean and Donn Reed. (These two books are different from each other and are not duplicates in any way.)
Each recommended book and curriculum is footnoted with a source. This is nice yet it is unavoidable that companies change their inventory constantly. I found that some of the recommended books were unavailable at the recommended sources when I attempted to buy them. The author didn't include ISBN numbers for the recommended books, and I had trouble finding the books doing a general book search without the ISBN (for example, many books are called "children's bible" and no author name was listed for that volume). Lastly, Internet Website addresses were not given for any of the sources although many of the companies do have a Website. I used a search engine to track down the websites with success.
I think the strongest area is Berquist's detailed recommendations for quality teaching materials for the subject of Catholicism. The religion curriculum is very detailed: more detailed than other subjects and I found it very helpful. I feel that some of her recommended courses of study are weak, such as using the game "Mommy, it's a Renoir" to teach art spanning several grade levels.
Two homeschooling mothers that I know who read "The Well Trained Mind" (TWTM) first and wanted to design their own Catholic Classical Education program for their children said they felt this book was invaluable and both recommended that I read this book. They found it easy to read, felt that it had good resource listings, and said it helped quelch a bit of fear about what they perceived was an overwhelming task after reading TWTM: to custom design a classical education for their own children.
This is definitely worth reading if you are starting out homeschooling with the intent to design your own classical curriculum, which includes teaching Catholicism to your children. You may not choose to duplicate Berquist's program 100%, but you will find many good recommendations, good source lists to obtain catalogs from, and will be inspired and will feel that you are capable of designing your own curriculum plan!
A "Must Have" Resource.......2002-03-28
Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum is definitely one of the best homeschooling purchases I have made over the years. Not only is it an excellent resource for beginners wishing to learn about the classical education route, but it is also an invaluable reference for experienced homeschool veterans. In this book, the author shares helpful advice and numerous tips from her many years of homeschooling experience in addition to offering various curriculum suggestions for each stage of the trivium.
Instead of dictating one cookie cutter form of classical education, the author stresses that classical education (before the college years) is primarily about 'formation' and not 'information'. What is important is the method used and not necessarily the particular resources. This book will truly help you design your own curriculum while sticking with the method of classical education.
Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum is definitely a "must have" resource that is worth its weight in gold!

Book Description
An accessible companion to one of Plato's most important works now in a welcome updated second edition. It leads the reader through Plato's life, the background to the Republic, its text and ideas and its continuing influence on Western thought.
In this second edition of the highly successful Routledge Philosophy GuideBook to Plato and the Republic, Nickolas Pappas extends his exploration of the text to include substantial revisions and new material. In addition to the existing text, the chapters on Plato's ethics and politics have been revised and enlarged to include two brand new sections. There is further discussion of Plato on aesthetics including a section of Aristotle's criticism of Plato on beauty.
Customer Reviews:
A must for Plato readers.......2003-08-01
Nickolas Pappas' book on Plato's Republic adds a unique perspective to the collection of books on Plato and his major political work. Pappas presents this ancient masterpiece with an eye on the modern reader and "present interest." We not only fit the Republic into political thought and practice of the Fifth Century B.C. We also perceive its relevance to today's world.
Instead of a dry, "academic" discussion, the author presents a lively and trenchant analysis that investigates every concept of Plato's work. The book's exhaustive index is an additional aid to the reader. So is the author's concluding section titled "Fundamental Premises in the Republic's Argument." As a teacher of philosophy myself, I consider Pappas' work to be indispensable for my students' comprehension of some of the most intriguing and challenging ideas on government and citizenship ever developed in political thought. Pappas shows clearly why Plato's Republic has endured for over 2,000 years as a blueprint for the critique of politics in any age.
For the busy student.......2003-06-23
Although Pappas' book on the Republic is well written and fairly detailed, I feel that it adds little to the two standard texts: Julia Annas' and Nicholas White's. In fact Pappas admits in his introduction that he has drawn a lot from these. Pappas' study can be a good choice for the student in a rush, but it is not the best for an in-depth study of the text.
Extremely Useful Tool.......2001-10-04
I must agree with the reviewers below: this commentary has greatly enhanced my understanding of The Republic. Even when I think I get it on my own, there is always some nuance or other perspective brought to light; sometimes my own ideas are reinforced, which is very reassuring! I will look for books in this series that discuss other philosophical works -- the extra reading is worth the effort.
Routledge Philosophy.......2000-11-11
Very well done. A good read.
The best book available for understanding this text.......2000-01-17
Professor Pappas has written the best book of its kind on this important and often difficult work. To coin a phrase, it really is the Republic "in large letters." I would not try to tackle the forms without it.

Oedipus, the banished king of Greek mythology who killed his father and married his mother, is the subject of Sophocles' Oedipus Trilogy, a series of three tragedies that tell a connected story. Despite their antiquity, these timeless works bring up questions that remain relevant in our society, and their exciting, colorful stories have a universal appeal that still captivates readers.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2000-11-09
These cliff notes are great! They give you an indepth analyzation of all the characters, a great background, a summary and an analysis for every part of the book. These a great if you are not familiar with Greek literature or are having any trouble.
Not Too Bad.......2000-05-12
Leave it to Cliff Notes to produce another fine study aid to classic literature pieces. The insights were intuitive and well thought out and it made the difficult plays to read and understand quite easy. I would recommend it to anyone having to read any of the included plays.

Book Description
C. P. Cavafy, one of the greatest modern Greek poets, lived in Alexandria for all but a few of his seventy years. Alexandria became, for Cavafy, a central poetic metaphor and eventually the heart of a myth encompassing the entire Greek world. In this, the first full-length critical work on Cavafy in English, Keeley describes Cavafy's literary progress and aesthetic development in the making of that myth.
Customer Reviews:
A must if you like Cavafy.......2007-01-04
I'm an unapologetic Cavafy Fan and this book provided new insights into his world.
My advise is read the poems, read this book and then read the poems again and you will find a whole new way of looking at Cavafy's genius.
Important literary review of the Greek Poet.......2000-07-03
I had been reading Cavafy's poetry for a rather long time before picking up Keeley's book. The book has opened up new aspects of the poetry I didn't discover while reading consciously. For example, Keeley notes the myth-making drama of Alexandria (both ancient and modern) that Cavafy created over a span of 20 years.
Toward the end of the book, Keeley outlines modern criticism of Cavafy's work and attempts to show the genius that Cavafy is.

This book is a life-saver.......2004-01-16
I am a freshman, and for exams, my teacher told us to read "The Odyssey" by Homer. Since the book is written in somewhat of a poem form, I found it kind of difficult to understand. After I received the cliff notes on "The Odyssey", I understood what was going on in the story better, and was able to answer the questions on my exam.
Thanks god for this book!.......1999-10-19
Thank goodness I had this book because "The Odyssey was way to long and included to many people. It took between four and five pages to describe one thing and this book shortened it to a paragraph.Yeah thats it.
complicated.......1999-10-05
This book is very confusing. There are too many names to remember and we shouldn't have to read it at school.
Overated.......1999-09-20
The odyssey is long and boring and should be condensed a few hundred pages.

Book Description
This booklet provides the answers to the exercises appearing in Introduction to Attic Greek by Donald J. Mastronarde, University of California Press 1993. The answers given here take into account the very few changes and corrections in the exercises made in the third printing of the paperback edition (and all subsequent printings), which was issued in 1995. The different answers applicable to the first and second printing are recorded in notes.
Customer Reviews:
Essential for self study........2007-07-18
Because I have to study on my own this answer book obviously is a must. Mastronarde's approach in his textbook is just right for me as I am studying on my own with the answer book.
A Worthy Grammar.......2007-05-20
I found Mastronarde's Introduction to Attic Greek most helpful in its approach and explanations of important grammatical matters. It is not the kind of book that overwhelms a student with information nor simplifies too much trying to make things ever the quicker and easier. Overall, I found this a very worthy grammar.
A quality language text -- Wish there were more like it.......2007-05-07
As a linguist with a fair amount of experience in Asian languages (Mandarin and Classical/Literary Chinese), I was interested in approaching a language of a completely different nature: Attic Greek. After reading through a number of other reviews, I settled on this book and have been thrilled with my purchase ever since. Mastronarde gets the basic idea that vocabulary you can't effectively use (i.e. words for which you don't understand the associated grammar) is worthless and takes all the necessary precautions to make sure that by the time you learn a new term you know how it's used. The negative reviews I've seen for this book mainly have to do with it's grammar-centric composition (which is viewed as being slow to develop), but if you're going to learn a language with the aim to enjoy it for the rest of your life, why complain about using a text that'll be a little slower in the first two weeks but ultimately leave you with superior understanding?
This is a marvelous book, but I highly recommend purchasing Introduction to Attic Greek ANSWER BOOK as well. Morice's Stories in Attic Greek is another goodie as it allows you to see the language in action once you've covered the basics of declension and conjugation and provides some of the cultural knowledge necessary to fully engage an original text.
outstanding, thorough, and manageable.......2007-03-27
I am at Unit 27, learning Greek on my own. So far: outstanding, thorough, and manageable. As others have noted, the Answer key is invaluable.
The exercises are designed to reinforce what has been presented. While they do stretch the student, they include no surprises, nor items that have not yet been presented.
I've also been using "Morice's Easy Stories in Attic Greek," when I want a break from the straight grammar text, and just do some reading. One could start (with struggle!) Morice's stories after Mastronarde's Unit 18-20 Verb Principal Part mega-review.
Another note. Mastronarde's book seems largely derived (modernized, improved!) from Herbert Smyth's 1920's era classic Greek Grammar. Those who want another perspective on a thorny issue can find Smyth on Google Books or (sometimes) on Ebay.
Finally, a confession. The only part of Mastronarde's book which has truly baffled me is the "Athematic Aorist." Everything else, I get. I don't mean I have perfect recall of all that has been presented, but that, on reading it, I could understand it. Not so the "Athematic Aorist."
But, all in all, this is a very very good Greek grammar text.
Indispensable if you are serious about learning the language.......2006-11-05
If you have just started learning Greek and you think there is an easy way to master it, you should better stop fantasising. This book will never try to convince you that there is such a way. It would not be honest.
That is why you will find lots of grammar here. You will need it. You will appreciate later how clearly the material is presented, especially the notorious irregular verbs. Even after completing this book you will use it as a reference tool. This is one of the reasons why the book is such a good buy.
Another strong point of this book are exercises. They are very well planned and designed to achieve one single aim: to develop proper language structures in your brain. Important hint however: do not buy "The Introduction..." without the answer book. The exercises are not easy and you will need a confirmation that you are doing them properly.
One tiny little drawback. The editor's work could have been done better. It is generally good practice in editing books to use different sorts of type, like bold-faced one. Another idea, which is also not entirely bad (and one could expect that it should be understood by editors worldwide), is to organise the text into clear paragraphs instead of gathering it into big lumps which are not only difficult to read but also will destroy any attempt to find an information quickly. I hope this will be corrected in future editions.
