Customer Reviews:
Author is a Great Instructor and Writer.......2007-07-11
I graduated LPN school in the summer of 06' and right after graduating school I had to buy the newest edition to this book, because not only is it a very easy read, but it is one of the best reference books out their espically for nurses in Hospitals!! If you are deffently in the Medical-Surgical part of Nursing this deffently would be the book you would want to buy!!
Great for Graduates, Also!.......2007-02-12
I graduated from LPN school in April 2006. I wanted one book to use as a reference rather than searching through all of my previous books, and I always loved the LPN thread books. They are specifically for MY practice, and I do believe that RNs can also benefit from using this text. I purchased this after I started working and I read it once or twice a week to keep up with information. Well worth the purchase, folks!

Book Description
The fully updated second edition of Foundations of Nursing gives you all the information you need to successfully complete your nursing curriculum. This single volume includes comprehensive, fundamental content in basic nursing, adult health nursing, and maternal and pediatric nursing. Introductory content covers such topics as the health care system, communication, nursing processes, and client teaching. Current topics such as HIPAA, West Nile Virus, SARS, and bioterrorism are also discussed. The adult health nursing section is written following the Nursing Process format. The clinical chapters have been revised to include Nursing Management sections for each disorder, emphasizing the nurse's role in providing competent client care. Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) and Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) have been identified in each Nursing Care Plan. A Case Study included in each chapter uses critical thinking questions to assist the user through the nursing process and to develop a customized plan of care for the client in the scenario. The maternal and pediatric section covers topics such as prenatal care, complications of pregnancy, birth, postpartum care, and newborn care. Childrearing is covered from birth through 18 years of age.

interesting .......2006-11-10
This is more interesting than many other books on the subject. ALso, the author made it easier to understand and less boring to read. Overall a good and interesting book.
Used Online School Books.......2006-03-26
This book was in excellent condition from the hard cover to the pages in between. There was no highlighting in the book. No one had written notes in this book. I was truly delighted when I thumbed through the book. Now that I have had time to work in this book I ever more so delighted. This was my first time buying school books online and amazon will be used again in the near future. I will also recommend my friends to do the same. Thank you Amazon.
Sincerely,
Valerie Smith

Customer Reviews:
Best New Writing Book of the Year.......2007-10-17
Every writing teacher needs this book. One of the best I've found. Already teaching from it. Plus, The Nieman Foundation Website offers more useful writing & teaching tools than most fee-based services. Should be required reading for all creative nonfiction and journalism undergrad and grad students.
Essential reading for serious writers.......2007-06-02
"Telling True Stories" belongs on every serious writer's bookshelf. Including insights from many of the luminaries in the narrative non-fiction world, it is not only an essential read for someone working in this field, but a lively and inspiring one as well. Highly recommended!
A rookie reporter appreciates guide to better story telling.......2007-05-08
"Telling True Stories" is 91 outstanding essays on what narrative nonfiction reporting and writing are and how to do both better. The book, described as "a nonfiction writers' guide," features many award winning reporters, editors and teachers who have presented during Nieman Conferences on Narrative Journalism and include Walt Harrington, Jack Hart, Tom French, Tom Hallman and John Franklin. The title could just as easily been "Telling True Stories Compellingly" for these essayists and others clearly describe how fact-based narratives, when employing the story-telling techniques described in detail, can produce truly memorable newspaper pieces, magazine articles and books. As a rookie newspaper reporter very interested in writing stories that will be read, this book is worth at least double the price - maybe triple.
Wonderful resource for a professional speechwriter.......2007-03-21
People love stories. I'm a professional speechwriter working in a large High Tech company. The essays in this book are a wonderful inspiration. I'm always looking for ways to move executive communications beyond PowerPoint slides and boring datapoints. Stories are a key way of engaging an audience. This book shows how the best stories are researched and reported; constructed; edited and published.
Example: Jack Hart's distinction between Summary and Narrative (p. 112) lists how the story emphasizes concrete detail (over the abstract); employs dialog; a specific point of view and occurs lower on the level of abstraction. These are all important points to remember when reviewing a speech or presentation for audience appeal.
Learn the elements of good storytelling.......2007-03-06
Want to write true stories that will still be readable five, 10, 20, 50 years from now? Ever talk to someone who told you something that touched your heart, whether it's an experience they had or just a good yarn that you'll think about long after the conversation's over?
These are the kinds of stories this book will show you how to write. The authors won't tell you exactly. That's a path you'll have to find out for yourself. But they'll give you guides, practical tips to learn how to talk and write like you're having a conversation with a reader who wants to know more about your story.
As a working journalist for a mid-sized newspaper in Southwest Virginia, I've read countless of books discussing the techniques of narrative writing. This one ranks high above them. Many of the authors break down the elements of telling good stories. For example, listen to Susan Orlean talk about having voice in your stories: "You can't invent a voice. And you can't imitate someone else's voice, though trying to can be a good exercise. It can lead you to begin to understand the mechanisms that convey the voice. Read your stories out loud so you can hear how you tell stories. As you read, ask yourself: Does it sound real? Would I have said it that way?"
The editors of the book offer nice introductions to each section and tell you who you'll be reading in the next few pages. It reminds me of a book by Stanley Cavell called "Cities of Words," which is presented as a series of lectures in a classroom.
The way this book is put together is similar. It reads like you're in class waiting for a lecture from folks such as Tom Wolfe, Susan Orlean, Tracy Kidder and others. There is no shortage of ideas, approaches to reporting and writing stories and you can't help but think how you would have tackled a famed writer's story if you were in their position. (Probably, not very well. But better, I'm assuming, than those who don't read this book.)
Writing true stories is not the easiest way to spend your time. It can get very frustrating and confusing. That's why this book is important. It has given me a new perspective on how to approach these kinds of stories and that's why I recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
not for learners.......2007-09-21
The book overall is good there are areas on braking and road position that should be questioned by all level of rider who ride on the road and not a race track
Good basic coverage.......2007-09-01
This is a good beginning book for someone starting out motorcycling. Not the best, but a good book and from a good organization.
Book on riding motorcycle.......2007-08-23
I was pleased with the book and thought it had a lot of information that I needed.
Excellent Primer on Riding.......2007-07-03
A casual remark about motorcycles from my wife sparked an ember of interest in both of us. Soon I was looking for more information on the Internet. Many website kept referring newbie riders to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. I figured that their motorcycle primer would be a good place to start.
The book thoroughly covers the basics - parts of a motorcycle, controls, how to ride, and how to stay safe. Lots of illustrations and photographs make visualization easy and the text is written expressly for those of us with absolutely no experience on a bike.
Further chapters try to explain traction dynamics, countersteering, cornering, and street smarts. None of these chapters became too bogged down by the abstract concepts. Again, some nice illustrations did wonders toward explaining traction and center of gravity.
Excellent book! I have my bike permit and can't wait to attend an MSF Safety Class and get my license!
Great for first time motorcyclists!.......2007-06-27
I've debating buying a motorcycle for several years, and now with gas prices so high I finally took the plunge. I bought a used Suzuki GS500F, which I really do enjoy! I've been commuting to work most sunny days, and the gas savings is amazing. Okay, now to this reference book: First, I took my motorcycle license exam and aced it! This books is an amazing primer for anyone who would like to ride a motorcycle. It covers just about everything you could think of for a new owner, and it's the resource that allowed me to pass my motorcycle exam with a perfect score. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's thinking about or has newly purchased their first motorcycle.

Book Description
The Challenge of Educating Lawyers
"This volume, under the presidency of Lee Shulman, is intended primarily to foster appreciation for what legal education does at its best. We want to encourage more informed scholarship and imaginative dialogue about teaching and learning for the law at all organizational levels: in individual law schools, in the academic associations, in the profession itself. We also believe our findings will be of interest within the academy beyond the professional schools, as well as among that public concerned with higher education and the promotion of professional excellence."
—
From the Introduction
"Educating Lawyers is no doubt the best work on the analysis and reform of legal education that I have ever read. There is a call for deep changes in the way law is taught, and I believe that it will be a landmark in the history of legal education."
—Bryant G. Garth, dean and professor of law, Southwestern Law School and former director of the American Bar Foundation
"Educating Lawyers succeeds admirably in describing the educational programs at virtually every American law school. The call for the integration of the three apprenticeships seems to me exactly what is needed to make legal education more 'professional,' to prepare law students better for the practice of law, and to address societal expectations of lawyers."
—Stephen Wizner, dean of faculty, William O. Douglas Clinical Professor of Law, Yale Law School

Customer Reviews:
Great for people who like to do things right the first time.......2007-09-19
This is good for even advanced people as it gives little trade sercerts for stronger walls. Its a good book and a must if you are doing concrete work yourself.
no help.......2005-12-20
I bought this without reading the reviews, it was a mistake. I am designing an addition and need a clear guide from forms to finishing. This isn't it. As meantioned, it is a collection of articles. While informative, there are major gaps in coverage and I am no more ready to design my foundation than before. There is more useful info on foundations in the framing books I purchased.
Disappointment.......2005-03-21
This book lacks the details for someone who is looking to actually do the work themselves. As mentioned in one of the other reviews - this book is just a composite of magazine article. Typical of magazine articles - shallow with little substance.
Just a compilation.......2004-03-24
I have a couple of other books in the "for pros by pros" series and they are great. I was disappointed in this one, however.
Rather than a guide that started at the beginning and followed a logical progression, it was merely a compilation of articles from Fine Homebuilding. They were each good, but several mentioned that "space limitation prevent me from expounding on..." While this is true in a magazine, it shouldn't be the case in the book.
Also, with so many authors, there was a lot of contradictory information. In one "chapter" the author showed exactly how to (and how not to) use rebar. In a subsequent "chapter" another author was shown using rebar in precisely the way the first author said was incorrect. This went on throughout the book. How do you know who is right?
And while the book was published in 2003, some of the articles were from the early 80's. I was hoping for a chapter on laser layout, but there was no mention of a laser anywhere in the book. (But plenty of instructions to use water levels and transits.) It wasn't a bad book, just not what I was expecting after the Plumbing and Electrical books were so good. A better use of money would be to purchase a one year subscription to the Fine Homebuilding online archives - it's a great resource. It has everything in this book, along with thousands of other articles.

Much great information and well written ( you might expect).......2007-03-22
I guess you might expect a 5th edition book on reasoning and writing style to be well written! It is. Designed for 1st year law students, I got it becaause I am not an attny but spend a lot of time reading federal manuals and regulations with a lot of legal reaaoning beneath them, and then interpreting them and writing guidance to what they mean. Also i work in a field where cases regularly go to administrative law judges or where I get decisons back from them, and I also try to act in coordination with decisions in other jurisdictions or case that I am aware of. I found the book very useful. it actually functions as a fairly good working overview of the legal "system" - briefs, opinions, depositions, motions, claims, etc, while focusing most of the course on reasoning and writing per se. Some might might also enjoy the older 1970s book, cited by Neumann, Twining, "how to do things with rules." Books like Neumann on clear reasoning and clear writing are always useful, and this will likely improve your general writing skills as well.
Excellant Introduction to legal writing style.......2002-07-28
The text focuses on constructing proof of a conclusion of law and teaches format, style, and grammar collaterally. The goal is to help students learn how to make the
kind of writing decisions that center on the need to prove analysis. Most students have substantial difficulties learning how to construct proof. If format and style
receive primary emphasis, the problem is compounded because the student is invited to mimic the customary appearance of a document, rather than to think through its
content and inner logic. Moreover, format comes easier to students who have already learned the dynamics of proof, and legal writing's heightened requirements of
style and grammar may be easier to accept when they are explained as ways of clarifying proof. And as a skill, style is much more valuable when rewriting second and
third drafts than in producing a first draft.
Part I of the text introduces students to the court and litigation systems, the structure and operation of rules of law, judicial opinions, and methods of briefing them.
Legal writing in general is introduced in Part II. Part III explains how to write an office memorandum; organize proof of a conclusion of law; use authority; analyze
facts; and use paragraphing, style, and citations. Part IV helps students with their first law school examinations. Part V introduces the advocacy skills of theory
development, argumentation, and accurate handling of procedural postures. Writing a persuasive motion memorandum is covered in Part VI; appellate briefs in Part
VII; and oral argument in Part VIII.
Get Mr. Neumann's Book!.......2002-07-14
I got this book from the law library at school and I am going to buy Mr. Neumann's 2002 edition if there is one.
This is a good book to have for Law School!
I have read many pre-law books. This book explains so much in just two short concisely written chapters. I do have one small complaint the title of this book is wrong, this book covers so much more!
This book is an introduction to law, it explains and provides a general overview of the civil procedure process and goes over case briefing. I think this book is more useful than Helen Shapo's book on Legal Writing. In short, GET IT!
American Law the Essence of Persuasive Writing.......2000-07-05
Mr. Newmann, Jr., the author, has captured the essential ingredients of American Common-Law, from it's heritage, rule analysis, and sources of law to it's practical application using lawyerly persuasion with words. Presented is a practical, logical, and understandable book format that supports the applied art of legal interpreting, reasoning, persuasive writing. This book is a must-have for all who desire to analyze facts with rules and then create persuasive or predictive legal written results in legal style.

Book Description
Work and Integrity is a timely resource that examines the crisis as well as the promise of professionalism in contemporary society. This vital book argues for the importance of a new civic professionalism that reflects the ideals of democracy and public service in our ever more complex economic environment. A publication of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Work and Integrity explores the most current thinking on the various (and often conflicting) ways in which the concept of professional work is understood. Using examples from the United States and Europe, the author describes how the professions evolved from a limited kind of genteel occupation into one of the most widely emulated and sought-after models of work. The book also explores the rise of complex institutions of industrial and postindustrial society, especially the university and the bureaucratic structures of business, government, health care, and education.
