      Book Description

The third edition of Engineering Design represents a major reorganization and expansion. The revision has resulted from the recognition that engineering students need more structure to guide them through the design process. Chapters have been reordered to be more in the natural progression of the design process. The book is broader in content than most design texts, but now contains much more prescriptive guidance on how to carry out design.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my career in the first months and beyond!.......2007-03-01

I have seen Donna speak several times. My most memorable was the first time hearing her speak at the National Student Nurse Association convention. She was so inspirational and helpful. Donna personally signed a copy of this book that book got me through some of my roughest times as a new nurse. Yes, her advise is logical common knowledge to some, but when your are new to a profession and somewhat timid, the words are a great gift of help! Thank you Donna for helping me survive my first year. Now, 5 years later, I am a thriving nurse that continues to reference the book at times as a refresher. I also encourage as many new grads as I can to read it.

Nursing is so fortunate to have a person like Donna to positively promote the profession.

Additionally, I educate nurses about bullying and typically refer my audience to Donna's site and her article "Do Nurses Really Eat Their Young." It's a great article and I agree with Donna wholly that there truly are more helping nurses than bullies. Unfortunately those few bullies have a large impact on the nursing profession. I attempt to help nurses "bully-proof" themselves and see there are ways to avoid the bullies and those bullies are not the majority in nursing. Donna has encouraged me in this endeavor. She also encouraged me to reinforce to my audience the new mantra she would like to create for nursing..."Nurses nurture their own."

All in all, what I have tried to get across to you here is:
1.) Nursing is a great profession,
2.) Donna is a great mentor for nurses,
3.) THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!

Over the weekend I purchased Your First Year As a Nurse: Making the
Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional because I wanted
a new start. Let me just say that 1) it was money well spent and 2)
purchasing this book should be made a mandatory requirement to any
student who starts a nursing program.

So far, I have read half the book. Already I have found some renewed
energy, and my enthusiasm about nursing is increasing again. I
graduated five months ago and took a job in an ICU where I have been working for four months and half months. Recently, I made the decision to leave the ICU.

I am starting in a step down unit tomorrow and I am very excited about
starting over. I experienced all of the following prior to making this
decision: frustration, fatigue, anxiety, dreading going to work, fear of
making mistakes, and many other emotions. Had I read your book prior to
starting this position, I could have avoided this painful period in my
nursing career. Of course, I have learned many valuable lessons. But I
do think nursing would earn a better reputation if newcomers did not have
to go through this experience. And I know that I am not the only one who has felt this way. I have read countless numbers of blogs on the internet of new grads who described the same feelings I shared earlier.

Thank you Ms. Cardlille for all the wonderful advice that you have shared. I joined the ANA today and contacted my state's Nurse Association regarding future events. I am looking forward to networking because you make it sound so much fun and rewarding. Please continue the work that you are doing. You are very inspiring to new nurses.

      A grateful new grad.

      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Geometry and Camelot.......2007-08-10

This 32 page children's book tells how Sir Cumference, his wife the Lady Di of Ameter, and their son Radius solve the problems of the king's table. King Arthur and his knights needed to have a council, but there was a problem with the table around which they met. It began as too long; after that was fixed, the table had too few sides, and other tables produced more objections. Geo of Metry makes tables in several shapes before a round table solves all the problems. The illustrations are great, with medieval pageantry and geometric explanations. A few other characters from Camelot appear, such as Sir Lancelot and Sir Gawain.

This is a great book to introduce geometry to the young, making it fun and easy. Shapes and measurements are explained in the quest for the perfect council table for the king and his knights. When the round table is finally found to be the perfect shape, the king names certain measurements after Sir Cumference, Radius, and the Lady Di from Ameter. Very cute!

5 out of 5 stars Led to instant recall of proper geometric terms.......2007-04-28

My kids (9 and 6) , who are homeschooled, loved this story and it resulted in them being able to instantly recall the proper names of geometric elements and classes (e.g., radius, circumference, obtuse, acute). This is probably due to the clever visual and contextual associations provided. We bought another book in the series right afterward with the same results. Plan to get them all.

5 out of 5 stars Sir Cumference and the First Round Table: A Math Adventure.......2007-02-20

Very cute story and a nice way of using word play to describe geometric vocabulary. Great for an introduction to the concept and as a review for older children.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way Of Sneaking In Math!.......2006-08-05

My daughter has always had a problem learning Math but reading this book (along with the others in this series) has helped her immensely! The books themselves are a bit young for her but the concepts in them (Pi, Geometry, etc) are explained in a way I think she needed.

I would recommend these to anyone who has a child with problems in math concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Book CD and supporting web page is first rate.......2005-10-30

My only complaint is that some of the algebra should be worked out with a few more intermediate steps. The worked out homework problems are fabulous and sooo plentiful.

I wish I had the time to really read the whole book. My ECE201 course will probably only cover around 6 chapters.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-09-26

I think this book is absolutely outstanding. I don't understand any of the negative comments. The cd that comes with the book is indispensble. It provides example after example. I actually bought schaum's outline of dsp as well, but because of all the examples on the cd (they are handwritten) I don't even have a need to refer to the outline.

In addition, I thought the content of the chapters to be very readable. The only downside is that because the book is dated 1998 the matlab code is out of date and some of the drills no longer work with the newer versions.

      1 out of 5 stars A horrible attempt........2005-01-23

This is probably the worst textbook that I have used in the past two years. The book makes a lot of basic concepts seem very difficult and a lacks the proper examples to even explain what the problems at the end of the chapter are asking. The wording is very boring and tends to put the reader to sleep- making the poor explanation of concepts even worse. The authors jump around and often fail to define terms or use them before they are explained. The index has proved to be worthless in many of these instances. There are a lot of problems that I do not believe could be solved by a new edition.

      1 out of 5 stars Needs Improvement.......2004-12-20

I'm not sure who wrote the positive reviews here, but I can tell you as a student using this book that it is among the worst I've ever been stuck with and most of my classmates seem to agree.

The concepts are made much more difficult than they should be by poor writing. The authors jump around constantly, use new terminology at times before introducing it, and provide examples that are inadequate in helping to solve the problems at the end of the chapter. Stylistically, the writing is very bland and sure to put you to sleep. The first sentence of the book is "This is a book about signals and systems."

Sure, this book may cover all of the core concepts involved in signal processing, but trying to make sense of it when you don't already have a background in the subject is quite a challenge. After reading the chapters, we were unable to solve most of the problems in the book until given the answers were given to us. I've dealt with bad textbooks before, but this one tops them all. Needless to say, it was very frustrating experience and I can't say I recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Oops! These reviews are for another book.......2003-12-31

The reviews listed here, as of 12/30/03, are identical to the reviews for the 1997 book: "DSP First: A Multimedia Approach", by the same authors. Humm, I wonder how that happened!!!

(I don't own, and have not read, this book; but I had to enter a "star" rating to post this message. So I entered a 3-star rating which is in no way indicative of the quality of this book.)

      Book Description

A First Course in the Finite Element Analysis provides a simple, basic approach to the finite element method that can be understood by both undergraduate and graduate students. It does not have the usual prerequisites (such as structural analysis) required by most available texts in this area. The book is written primarily as a basic learning tool for the undergraduate student in civil and mechanical engineering whose main interest is in stress analysis and heat transfer. The text is geared toward those who want to apply the finite element method as a tool to solve practical physical problems. This revised fourth edition includes the addition of a large number of new problems (including SI problems), an appendix for mechanical and thermal properties, and more civil applications.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent First Text.......2007-08-24

A very good book for someone that has never studied this subject before. It's clearly written, and has very good practical examples. I was able to easily work the problems in the end of the chapters using the equations and examples in the text. To use this book, you need to have elementary knowledge of mechanics of materials, basic structural design, and matrices. There is a very good appendix on matrices, which helps you work through that part of FEM.

      5 out of 5 stars Great update.......2007-05-30

3 out of 5 stars Take your time.......2006-02-15

I bought the book for a class I'm taking and it's proving a bit difficult to read, the text is small compared to most books, I'm assuming to save paper. The flow of the text seems to be a bit jumpy, as I read I have to refer to pictures and graphs which aren't on the same page, which makes keeping track of ideas a bit difficult when you're constantly flipping pages to find the correlating graph. Another item is that unless you know a little about the subject, then realizing key points is difficult, because they're not easily referenced. I suggest Bold typing or using the side margins to emphasize key points would help the introductory reader. So, as an introductory text the book is hard to read because the book is written more for the seasoned professional who is looking to brush up on some finite analysis techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent first course in FEM.......2001-10-22

This book may be the best text book I have come across in years.
If you have the basis of engineering (or physics or maths) you barely need an instructor.
The explainations are clear, and I haven't found any mistakes yet (if there are mistakes they will be few).
Lots of nice problems with answers provided.

This book is excellent for whom desires to learn on which basis FEMs work (undergraduate and graduate).

From out of nowhere, MAKE has rapidly become one of the hottest new magazines to hit the newsstands. Often coined "the bible of the Tech DIY movement" MAKE has coalesced a passionate if rather unorthodox following of geeks, gearheads, tech enthusiasts, hackers, tinkerers and artists united by a common compulsion to reconfigure the technology in their lives; even when it means violating a manufacturer's warranty or two.

Through the brilliantly written and beautifully illustrated magazine, podcasts and makezine.com website, the MAKE team has already won broad acclaim for their clear yet down-to-earth coverage and uncanny instinct for what moves Makers, and their ability to nail the curiosity, vibrance, and passion of the rapidly emerging "tech DIY" movement.

In this special re-release, all 4-Volumes of MAKE's first year are combined in a special 4-Volume Collector's Set.

I chanced upon an issue of Make magazine at the local "super chain" bookstore. I bought issue 11 and I was hooked. So I went looking for previous issues and I found a great deal on Amazon.com for the 1st year set.
Each issue is well organized and full of hacks of all kinds. I am working on my first beam bot and I look forward to trying my hand at programming an Arduino micro controller by the end of this year. There are so many things from these issues that I want to try out. So little time.

Great book for beginning, intermediate, advanced DIYers. For ideas, inspirations and detailed instructions.

I have since purchased the "Make: The Next year"

5 out of 5 stars Cover to Cover Goodness.......2007-08-04

Make Magazine, in conjunction with the website, is a staple read for any electronics enthusiast, modder, or creative genius. Filled with succinct outlines of various projects, in depth reviews, and community involvement, every page will bring a return on the small investment made to secure volumes 1-9.

4 out of 5 stars Good tinkerers mag.......2007-01-21

I ordered Make: The First Year from Amazon and was happy with the price and my order.
Make is for geeks and tinkerers. If you like Popular Science, you'll probably like Make. It goes a step further giving instructions for various projects, like making your own guitar to doing diverse connections and tricks with your iPod or old computer. Some of the info is a little sparse, but all and all it's well presented. There are also various tips and resources which are of great use to those who like to do it themselves. There is also a definite tendency to recommend reuse of junk hardware and trash which appeals to my sense of conservation. It really galls me to see all the great stuff that goes to waste.
For the most part the magazine is well laid out and a pleasure to read. But there are some articles that have some very small type and side panels that are almost unreadable with dark letters on a dark background and vice versa. What were they thinking? That's not cool. Pop Sci tends to do that too, placing text over a photo or graphic that makes it difficult to read. That's why I gave it a 4 rather than a 5. Other than that it's a great magazine and I hope it is successful.

      4 out of 5 stars Deceptive description??.......2006-03-09

      Mark does a great job.

I love the magazine, great layout, great contents, and this a bargain price - but - one reason I bought this was seeing (Hardcover) in the description.

Sorry - putting four magazines in a slipcase, even a nice sturdy one, does NOT constitute a hardcover.

Great job otherwise, but the description needs to changed.

5 out of 5 stars Make Magazine... Makin' Waves.......2006-02-25

A long time ago (two decades ago) I tinkered with electronics and all sorts of mechanical contraptions (the robot I built and the hovercraft are but a few weird and wonderful things I made). Alas, even Radio Shack stopped selling the classic books on electronics by Forest Mims (ISBN: 0945053282 still available on Amazon.com).

However, to really do cool things with electronics you needed expensive micro-processors... so many of us went a played with computers... However, with the price of microcontrollers dropping to a few dollars... a new world was opening up. MAKE had entered this void with a brave, bold nicely desigened magazine.

Make is published quarterly, and is full of many projects, (not all of them electronics or even micro-processor based). The projects range from the silly (a timed tea bag remover... build out of a toaster mechanism!) to the cool (ramjet powered go-cart... Very Noisy and Very Fast!), to the artistic (cool devices to make Persistance of Vision designs while you dance).

Each project is carefully detailed, with clear instructions, copious pictures and links to further information, if necessary.

All projects are designed to allow the average hobbiest to quickly make their own version.

You are guarnteed to bookmark at least one project from each issues. I know I always go COOL!, I want to build that!.

No other magazine comes close to empowering the average person to become a "MAKER". Not since Wired magazines launch (over 10 years ago) has a magazine hit a un-met market with such brilliance. If you are interested in (or returning to) becoming a Maker, then MAKE is your guide.

      2 out of 5 stars Not Helpful - Except as a Footstool.......2007-01-11

I purchased this book for the first part of my Biomechanics class. We raced through the first 10 chapters, and each one was very difficult to understand. Fung skips steps in his derivations which, for an undergraduate, made studying more confusing and time consuming.

Probably the most frustrating part (at least for an engineering student) of the text is that none of the equations (except the ones from Chapter 1) are applied to anything. Not even for the problems at the end of each chapter. The book is just a long list of mathematical derivations regarding hypothetical blobs, I mean "bodies of mass", in space.

In summary, I wish this book had a lot more examples pertaining to applying all the equations written in this book. Perhaps application of these equations will be used in the second part of my Biomechanics class, where we use yet another Fung book. I hope so.

2 out of 5 stars Not good for me.......2005-03-08

I am the matematican and I had to start learning C.M. from this book. And I didn't like it. First chapter is some very simplified approach to linear elasticity, but it doesn't developed any intuition and reading it was waste of time. Stretch tensor was introduced with avoided notion of polar decomposition. This presentation was far less intuitive for me. The linear algerbra behind primal stresses is described and computed in details, but nowadays the student involved in computer methods and engineering must know this things in my opinion. And the language is not instuitive: me, matematican, couldn't do most of exercises after reading chapter they relate to. It tasted like old-fashioned book.

5 out of 5 stars What a great reference book.......2000-07-05

I thought that this book was a great reference source and it has come in handy for me many times. I would be willing to buy it if I could find a copy, unfortunately it is out of stock, so I will have to return to the library every time I need it.

      Book Description

The Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist and best-selling author of The Lexus and the Olive Tree gives a bold, timely, and surprising picture of the state of globalization in the twenty-first century.

In this brilliant #1 bestseller, "the most important columnist in America today" (Walter Russell Mead, The New York Times) demystifies the brave new world for readers, allowing them to make sense of the often bewildering global scene unfolding before their eyes. With his inimitable ability to translate complex foreign policy and economic issues, Thomas L. Friedman explains how the flattening of the world happened at the dawn of the twenty-first century; what it means to countries, companies, communities, and individuals; and how governments and societies can, and must, adapt. The World Is Flat is the timely and essential update on globalization, its successes and discontents, powerfully illuminated by one of our most respected journalists.

Friedman does not convince me that radical free trade is the answer to solving problems. While he does cover all the bases for the advancement of the technological revolution, Friedman is merciless in his analysis and does not allow for a lot of other factors to enter into his argument. I finished this book with an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach. I suggest that you read it but with a grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars A guide for the Globalized world.......2007-10-13

The World is Flat does a great job at describing the trend of globalization.
On one hand, globalization is raising the standard of living of many people around the world. Productivity and ingenuity are rapidly increasing as many new people and nations participate in the global market.
On the other hand, many people and nations are being left behind. Also, the modernization of countries is straining Earth's resources.

There are very recent statistics and anecdotal stories in the book. He gives a fascinating tour of the business processes of several worldwide businesses such as Walmart, Dell, Wipro, and UPS.
The US is indeed in trouble. Its educational system is falling in proportion to other countries. We are distracted by wars and wasteful political games when we need to focus on empowering our people.

While he has considerable interactions with business, he also has personal stories of India's untouchables striving to have a better life. There are also examples of how people use flattening technologies on the internet, to express themselves.
We are approaching the world where individuals are on a level playing field with large media organizations. Of course this is good and bad. While one person can blog about corruption and inequities in his government, another can use it to spread seeds of hate and prejudice.
These groups that spread hate prey on inequity, lack of voice, and opportunity to participate in global progress that its members feel.

Michael Friedman lays a challenge that we must work smarter, collaborate more, and constantly improve our country and world. I hope that you read this book and, even if you don't agree with his views, strive to make the world a better place.

1 out of 5 stars Friedman missed the key point.......2007-10-01

Friedman relies on personal anecdotes to generalize about a complex topic. His anecdotes are heavily biased, since he hangs around with captains of industry, who are big beneficiaries of laissez-faire globalization. He even justifies his approach with this quote: "One example is worth a thousand theories." Well, this topic is much too complex for such an approach. He is an entertaining (if very repetitive and self-absorbed) raconteur, but he misses the forest by spending over 600 pages congratulating himself for climbing a few low-hanging branches in the most obvious trees.

It is a mark of Friedman's approach and personality that he dates the beginning of "Flat World" phenomena to a few years ago, when he discovered them. He seems blissfully unaware of the long history of globalization. A few examples: 200 years ago, before refrigeration, North American entrepreneurs destroyed the English trade in domestic ice by building insulated ships and shipping New England ice to London (and even Calcutta); cheap water power and cotton in the US destroyed the British weaving trades 50 years later; 500 years ago, the takeover of Peruvian silver mines by Spanish entrepreneurs bankrupted silver production in Spain; there are countless examples of the effects of globalization from the Roman Empire's rise and fall as well (well-managed during the rise, disastrously so during the fall). Friedman's "born yesterday" myopia on this topic, and on the lessons of history, is puzzling.

Friedman glances by what is, in my mind, the central issue (e.g. the one that has the biggest impact on people): the different ways governments act and respond. He admits no expertise in economics, yet declares himself to be a Ricardian (without reflecting on the irony of a self-styled futurist relying on 200-year-old economic theory), and moves on. The rest of us, however, can learn a lot by looking at the differences and subtleties (or lack thereof) of governmental policies, a topic which is completely absent from Friedman's book. Asian countries, and to a lesser extent Western European countries, have created a regulatory environment that promotes a productive response in their own countries. Some examples:

If GM wants to sell cars in China or Europe, it is obligated to build a factory there, and transfer some of its technology to local partners. Intel has just announced that its next processor fab will be built in China; the economics of IC manufacturing is something I know quite a lot about, and labor costs are a negligible factor. Intel was forced to do this by Chinese economic policy, not by cheap Chinese labor. Ditto putting a previous Intel chip plant in Ireland when Intel started selling in volume in Europe. On the other hand, our own government has been a willing partner in the evisceration of American industrial and high-tech production. The governments of Asian and European countries shake their heads at our short-sightedness and short-term consumption greed.

I credit Friedman with making more people aware of this important topic. That earns him one star!

4 out of 5 stars An enthralling read, realistic and optimistic at the same time.......2007-09-28

The world is a complex place, so we need guides.
And Thomas L. Friedman is an excellent guide!
Flat world is an enthralling read. Sure, we still
dont know how the twenty-first century will unfold,
but here we get some glimpses of the mega trends that might end up
being the essence of twenty-first century!
Among many good insights I enjoyed: CQ + PQ > IQ.
Curiousity and passion is more important than Intelligence, even though we obviously also need intelligence in 21st century, obviously!
So, Kids with curiousity and passion will do better than the kids who are merely intelligent - given that they have a certain base level of intelligence and skills. I could buy into that line of thinking!
So off we go to the 21st century - with realism and optimism. Not a small achievement for a book!

      5 out of 5 stars a classic reader.......2007-09-28

I believe this book has received enought compliments I have no inention to add anymore.

Yet I strongly recomment it to be taken as a classic, a must, reader for those who stopped halfway of learning English, and scared away by their dull text books, or in want of a friendly language enviroment.

I have convinced my son and doughter that when, even before, they finished reading this book they will be thinking and writing English like an mother tongue.

And they took my word. They are now enjoying and reading faster and faster everyday.
