Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good tests. Quick review.......2007-09-03

The tests were definitely the best. The review's a little brief but very very helpful for the essays, not so good for the multiple choice though. By reading this book and 5 steps to a 5, i got a 5.

3 out of 5 stars Three Stars for a Score of Three.......2007-07-21

I just got my test results back, and I was relatively happy with a three. I outlined this book in the weeks before the testing day and I have to say it did help. My teacher also made us read specific chapters of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." Even though "Zinn" became the most popular swear word among my class, the book helped me superbly in my essays. I would recommend both Zinn and this for a good score of at least three, and possibly four if you studied harder than I did. If you are looking for a five, I would reccomend going to more than two sources - buy a few books and study off all you possibly can.

5 out of 5 stars It worked .......2007-07-03

Our child received a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam. Aside from having a stellar AP U.S. history teacher, the student obviously gained a huge advantage in test-taking skills from this volume.

3 out of 5 stars okay for a quick overview.......2007-06-12

Personally I don't think this book is very useful because it is too concise. You will not do well on the AP test if you depend on this book completely. In fact, I think you will fail the essay portion if you did not study from any other book. However, this book is good for a quick overview and can refresh your memory if you know the stuff well.

5 out of 5 stars Helping Son.......2006-11-11

This book is just what my son needs to prepare for the AP US History Exam.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book!.......2007-10-03

The best review book ever. Got me a 5 on the Ap US History exam!
It discusses all the most important parts in U.S. History and its practice tests are great!

5 out of 5 stars REA really is the best test prep for APUSH.......2007-07-14

literally questions in the practice tests appeared on the real exam. i remember seeing a nit-picky question on authors and themes of an era that i thankfully learned the previous day in REA. the practice tests may be a little bit harder than the actual thing, but extremely close. the reviews on each era is thorough and the practice tests are plenty. the explanations to the answers of the practice tests are also extremely helpful. one tip is to read the explanation of the correct answer after you complete a practice test, regardless of whether you got it right or wrong to guarantee you have your information down cold. i would say invest your apush money in this book only and you're set for the test in may.

5 out of 5 stars Best Review Book For APUSH!.......2007-06-27

This is the ultimate study book for the AP US History Exam, it has almost everyhting you need and will help you wonderously on the test, even if you only study the night before!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-06-18

As helpful as a book can possibly be. But honestly, like you're going to learn all of the AP US curriculum from one book? Just study in class, and use this for review, but definitely not as a learning tool.

The practice tests are great though.

4 out of 5 stars Don't be too scared of the thickness........2007-03-24

Though it looks fat, the book is nicely made. With dates, timelines, and good specifics. It has a lot of information and seemlessly connects from one era to another. It picks up on a lot of the events and covers over most of the important details that many people miss.

It's a good buy. Worth the money.

The seven categories are: Arts and Sciences, Domestic Policies, Presidential Matters, Wars and Foreign Relations, Economy and Business, Legal Issues, and Society and Culture. Questions and answers on flash cards cover every significant aspect of U.S. history from Abolitionism and Articles of Confederation to the Yalta Conference and Zachary Taylor. Here is an efficient and productive way to brush up on facts for the Advanced Placement exam, and an ideal supplement to classroom textbooks.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not entirely enough.......2007-07-14

overall, these cards are good but no great. they cant replace a prep book. they do a great job in reviewing the major ideas and concepts, but the lesser ones that the ap test might pick the cards arent much help there. and also, i didnt really like the format of teh cards. the bullets on the back aren't really bullets. they're like mini-paragraphs preceded by a dot.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, but overwhelming.......2007-06-27

it's avery nice comprehensive set, probally the best out here, but they can be hard to use for studying.

5 out of 5 stars AP United States History Flash Cards.......2006-07-20

These flashcards are a must for study material! They are very precise and hold a library of information. I'm certain they will assist my son in studying for his exams to earn a successful letter grade.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-03-14

This is literally the best review of US History. I felt yesterday that I knew no US History and I had my final exam at third. That night as well as before third I had gotten through the cards three times and knew the answer to every question on the exam. There is nothing better. If you want a 5 get these cards immediately. Great for a quick rview before the exam and a great value. These cards saved my life.

    ABOUT THE TEST
The Advanced Placement Program is designed to allow high school students to pursue college-level studies while attending high school. The three-hour five-minute AP U.S. History exam is usually given to high school students who have completed a year's study in a college-level U.S. History course. The test results are then used to determine the awarding of course credit and/or advanced course placement in college.

According to the College Board, students taking this exam are called upon to demonstrate "systematic factual knowledge" and bring to bear critical, persuasive analysis of the full sweep of U.S. history. This is why we make every effort to establish and build upon context for you, rather than encouraging rote memorization of disconnected facts.

The AP U.S. History Exam is divided into two sections:

    1) Multiple-Choice: This section is composed of 80 multiple-choice questions designed to gauge your ability to understand and analyze U.S. history from the Colonial period to the present. The majority of the questions, however, are based on 19th- and 20th-century history. This section tests factual knowledge, scope of preparation, and knowledge-based analytical skills. You'll have 55 minutes to complete this section, which accounts for 50 percent of your final grade.

    2) Free-Response: This section is composed of three essay questions designed to measure your ability to write coherent, intelligent, well-organized essays on historical topics. The essays require you to demonstrate mastery of historical interpretation and the ability to express views and knowledge in writing. The essays may relate documents to different areas, analyze common themes of different time periods, or compare individual and group experiences which reflect socioeconomic, racial, gender, and ethnic differences. Part A consists of a mandatory 15-minute reading period, followed by 45 minutes during which you must answer a document-based question (DBQ), which changes from year to year. In Part B the student chooses to answer on two of the topics that are given. You will have 70 minutes to write these essays. The free-response section counts for 50 percent of your final grade.

These topics are broken down into thirds:
    - Political Institutions (1/3rd)
    - Social and Economic Change (1/3rd)
    - Behavior and Public Policy, Diplomacy and International Relations, Intellectual and Cultural Development (1/3rd)

The time periods covered are as follows:
    - Pre-Colonial through 1789 (1/6th of exam)
    - 1790-1914 (1/2 of exam)
    - 1915-present (1/3rd of exam)

    ABOUT THE REVIEW SECTION
This book begins with REA's concise yet thorough 230-page review of U.S. history designed to acquaint you with the exam's scope of coverage. Our review covers these topics and historical time periods:

    - The Colonial Period (1500-1763)
    - The American Revolution (1763-1787)
    - The United States Constitution (1787-1789)
    - The New National (1789-1824)
    - Jacksonian Democracy and Westward Expansion (1824-1850)
    - Sectional Conflict and The Causes of the Civil War (1850-1860)
    - The Civil War and Reconstruction (1860-1877)
    - Industrialism, War, and the Progressive Era (1877-1912)
    - Wilson and World War I (1912-1920)
    - The Roaring Twenties and Economic Collapse (1920-1929)
    - The Great Depression and the New Deal (1929-1941)
    - World War II and the Post-War Era (1941-1960)
    - The New Frontier, Vietnam, and Social Upheaval (1960-1972)
    - Watergate, Carter, and the New Conservatism (1972-2001)

    SCORING THE EXAM
The multiple-choice section of the exam is scored by crediting each correct answer with one point and deducting one-fourth of a point for each incorrect answer. You will neither receive a credit nor suffer a deduction for unanswered questions. The free-response essays are graded by instructors and professors from across the country who come together each June for a week of non-stop AP essay grading. Each essay booklet is read and scored by several graders. Each grader provides a score for the individual essays. The DBQ is scored on a scale from 0 to 15, 0 being the lowest and 15 the highest. Each topic-based essay receives a score from 0 to 9. These scores are conceal...

I scored a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam using this book. Both the reviews and practice tests were very helpful. I especially enjoyed the reviews, and used them extensively to study for tests in my AP history class.

    5 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!.......2007-06-20

I bought the REA AP US History book to prepare over the summer for the course in fall. The history review is very detailed and seems to contain all the info I'll need! I'm very happy with the condition of the book- it was the second cheapest on the list of Used Items- by BrokenBindings- and it arrived in perfect condition. The only thing I'm dissappointed at is the delivery. Amazon cited only 2 days for delivery, and it took 9.

    5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-01-22

this review book is the best out there. i bought it second hand so i didn't get the CD with it, but the book covers everything. i use the textbook "america's history" by henretta, 7edition, and although very thorough, this book puts it in a consciese (sp?) form but includes everything ... good for cramming.

5 out of 5 stars Good for your money!.......2006-12-25

I prepared for the APUSH exam last May just by reading this book for TWO WEEKS (and I read an older version of this guide). I only stopped at the 1970s and still received a 4 on this exam. I highly recommend this; you will be satisfied. If I read this study guide twice and more thoroughly then I would have received a 5.

Buy this book, study it THOROUGHLY, and feel very prepared on the day of the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Best review book for AP US History.......2006-08-25

This is with no doubt the best review guide that you can buy for AP US History, if you use it to its full potential, no questions asked.

The review material is around 200 pages long, and all the important facts and information that you could need for those possible topics on the exam can be found there. Since there is such a large amount of review material though, I would recommend purchasing this book early in the year and highlighting important things in each section, so when you study for the AP test a month or so before the actual AP test you won't have to freak out about what parts you'll need to read out of the entire 200 pages of review (or just skipping it altogether.

Besides the excellent review this book provides, the best feature of this book in my opinion would be the six review tests it provides, along with about 6 sample essays for each of the tests. I did not do any of the essays myself; beginning in early April I simply went through ones I thought might be important topics on the exam, read them, highlighted them, and then studied them. As for the 6 multiple choice parts of the exam, I completed about 3 of these, and highlighted ones I got wrong. I would recommend doing one practice test a week before the exam (since I started them in april I only completed three) and reviewing only the ones that you get wrong.

By doing everything I mentioned above with this book, I got a 5 on the exam (2006). The two FRQ (Free Response Questions)'s I had to write for the actual AP exam were practically the same as two of the essays I had read in this book, so it really was an invaluable tool.

All this being said, if you buy this book at least a few months before the AP test it will really help you on it; if you buy it only a short time before the test you should probably just skip the review and try a few practice tests, look at the ones you got wrong, and study that time period (and of course read some of the essays).

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well-qualified to get you that high score.......2007-06-22

This book went through rain and sunshine with me three weeks before the exam. Without it, i think I would have failed the exam.

    4 out of 5 stars great book.......2006-05-16

With literally only 3 days to study for the exam, I used this book to help me out, and I read ALL the review, and even had time to take a practice test. There are 30 chapters and a quiz after each one (about 5 questions) which really help, and the really scary thing is the questions were strickingly similar to the actual AP Exam, actually some were almost EXACTLY the same. I went from a "1" on the diagnostic test to a "4" after reading the whole book. I hope I did that well on the actual exam =)

Only problem in there was that there were a few typos...I hate typos some years were mentioned before and then they changed it into 19-- instead of a dat ein the 1700s or they added an extra number like 18326 or something, and had a few misspellings, I'm finding these typos to be downright annoying and they appear frequently in Kaplan's books.

4 out of 5 stars US History AP Cliff Notes Review.......2007-10-18

Good for last minutes studying before AP exam, and for reviewing details that are not taught in the classroom.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2004-12-16

This book does just about nothing for you. At first I was amazed to see that they could do an AP US Review in so few pages. Now I know why. It merely gives you a list of "things to know." Each chapter literally consists of a header and a list of terms, such as "election of 1800" or "Articles of Confederation," and it suggests that you look it up in another book. I personally suggest the REA AP US book which provides full and simple explanations of everything.

2 out of 5 stars OK Book for Practice Tests; no review.......2004-05-02

This A.P. preparation book is not the best book I've ever seen. Unfortunately, I only purchased this book as a sole review shortly before the test and was disappointed. The practice tests in the back are great and there are four full example tests, therefore, I must give them some credit. Overall, would not recommend this book as a primary resource for studying.

2 out of 5 stars this book is an awful review.......2003-09-26

Being a cliffs study guide, I thought this book would be helpful, but it is NOT. I had to get another book that would actually help. The book just lists important names and places, and rarely explains them, resulting in you having to look up in the textbook all of the answers. It was worthless. The end multiple choice part was fine though.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent When Used with other AP Reviews.......2003-02-18

Although this book lacked depth of information when reviewing history, the tips on the multiple choice section and how to write the essays was fabulous. The practice tests were very helpful to me because I used this book to skim through the material, to look at the terms and to make sure I knew what those terms were (even though they were not defined). The tests will help you know how to deal with the real test. I used this review book with the one by REA and the Princeton Review, and found it very helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever.......2007-10-02

This is such a horrible review guide, I would definitely not recommend it. This book has no history review (yet it's for a history course??) and is all about how to write an essay, a skill we all learned a long time ago. Reading student essays and their critiques is not helpful whatsoever, and to make all of that worse the whole book is written in the most boring, dull and redundant language possible. The only reason I would buy this book is for a cure to insomnia.

2 out of 5 stars Lack of a review section + too much hist. documents = bad.......2007-06-13

I bought this book in preparation for the AP test. Thankfully, I recognized the fact that this book is completly worthless and I litereally gave the book to a friend, who did not have one at the last minute. This is the worst review book that BArrons has put out becuase it does not review any of the actual history and focusses way too much on the analytical part dealing with essays. The AP US test prides itself on the need to understand the facts in US history through the entire exam (the multiple choice questions test specific topics and the essay questions require teh incorporation of outside information). Do not rely on this book if you are aiming for anytyhing higher than a 2.

    3 out of 5 stars Great index.......2007-05-12

I took the exam yesterday. This guide was very helpful for the multiple-choice portion of the exam, even though there was only one practice section. However, the essays in the beginning of the book were confusing to me and it focused too much on the DBQ, otherwise I would be giving 4 stars. The most helpful part of the book for me was the timeline because it was a very useful reference for issues I had trouble remembering. The index of Presidents and policies was also very helpful. My friends were using other study guides and they were jealous of that index. I would buy this book for the index and the essay material, but for my next AP exam I will also buy a separate book for multiple choice.

    1 out of 5 stars No Review.......2006-04-15

Unlike most AP review books, this one fails to include what I'd call "American History in 150 pages." The content review is extremely minimal and extremely difficult to navigate. Anyone who sells this book would also sell Kaplan or Princeton Review. Definitely better choices.

    4 out of 5 stars It worked.......2006-03-13

This book will probably not suffice on its own, but coupled with my textbook and the internet, I was able to cover all the material in a couple months.
My AP class wasn't very good and I didn't know anything about history. I bought this book and used the outline at the back of the book to cover what I needed to know- the rest wasn't very helpful, but the outline made up for it. I did use the Princeton book to supplement, but it wasn't as helpful.
I would recommend this book for someone who is in a sub-standard class and looking to seriously learn and reivew - this book will probably not work if you start review a week before the test.
