2 out of 5 stars He is the alternative to "power running", and I lost my power!.......2007-10-18

Yeah, I know...this guy has run 30 milers constantly. But I do not think he truly understands how muscles work, or physics, for that matter. The parts of the book that did make sense were repeated so many times, I was bored with it. Relax, good posture, core strength...., but I don't buy the idea of your core creating a coil for your tendons and ligaments to do the work. Muscles do the work and SHOULD! But I kept an open mind. What do I know? I'm just a certified personal trainer. He studied with a chi master....wow.
The one suggestion that helped me was imagining the bungey cords pulling me forward.
One week after trying his suggestion to relax the glutes and run hills sideways, I developed inflammation in both of my TFL's. Several weeks, massages, icing, and accupuntures later, I finally picked up my marathon training again. I lost precious time and came in 45 minutes slower than before. I guess I should have followed his "brilliant" suggestion, and not focus on my time. "Just run, so it feels good" Back to tried and true and power running for me! I WILL train for schedules and times.

3 out of 5 stars If your current running form doesn't hurt , don't change........2007-10-12

I bought this book to improve my running form and especially my pace. This book introduces a person to being aware of your body mechanics while running. To me, many of the tips were common sense, such as keeping a straight posture and not swinging my arms wildly or crossing them in front of me. I probably wasn't leaning forward as much as I am now. I probably had more of an up and down stride, so that tip was helpful (although I'm still not any faster). The one tip that "did me in" was the tip to land mid-foot. I had always read and learned to land heel to toe. After about 2 months of landing mid-foot, I was puzzled and frustrated as to why I started to have extremely painful knees. Especially walking up and down stairs. I couldn't figure out why this was happening. It got to the point where I dreaded my run and every step I was saying ouch, ouch, ouch. Then I thought, I think I'll stride the way I used to stride and within 1 day the pain was gone. I am now back to a heel toe landing and wanted to warn other people who have read this book. I'm not saying the advice in the book is all bad, but you also need to listen to your own unique body.

4 out of 5 stars Not a runner, YET........2007-10-10

I'm a beginning runner and found the concepts in the book very valuable -- from how to position my body to the ideal attitude.
More importantly, I gave this book to two people who have been running for some time and do full marathons. Each of them thought the book very beneficial and have begun applying the principles to enhance their own style.
Since the techniques are based on martial arts principles (I'm a black belt), anyone involved in the fighting arts will appreciate the lessons -- whether you want to run or not.

4 out of 5 stars Chi Running.......2007-10-05

This book is great, there is a bit of fluffy Zen stuff in there, but there is also a bunch of great tips and exercises. I think it's fun and informative and a worthwhile read. Certainly a bargain at $12 bucks.

1 out of 5 stars Buy the Lore of Running - not this one!.......2007-10-05

This book could have been summed up in an introduction. Essentially don't waste energy when you're running. A little bit of biomechanics and a little bit of physics disguised as Eastern Philosophy. A waste of paper; in the form of a book and from my wallet in the form of money. Buy the book "Lore of Running" - smartest most complete book on running known to date. Very useful... worth your time and money. Still want this book - take mine.

Book Description

Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer is based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in a Runner's World article titled "Marathoning 101." The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: "I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps me to cope with things in general. The skills we've learned in this class don't apply just to marathoning -- they apply to life! Just like you never know what the next step in a marathon will bring, so too, you never know what will happen next in life. But if you don't keep going, you're never going to find out. By staying relaxed, centered, and positive you handle just about anything that comes your way." This is marathon running for real people, people with jobs and families and obligations outside of running. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer has proven successful for men and women of all ages. Now let it work for you.

2 out of 5 stars Useless as a reference.......2007-08-02

I've just started my training program, and this book seems to provide a realistic and successful training program. My beef is with the organization of the material. It's divided into weekly training guides, with general training information book-ended by pep talks in each chapter. The problem is that the training info is not in any particular order. There is no index. The table of contents does not actually describe the contents of the chapters. For example, if you want to find nutrition information before week six you have to page through the whole book to find it. Like I said, no index and the table of contents for chapter six says only "Physical Preparation," just like every other chapter. It would be worth two more stars if the TOC could muster a simple "Physical Preparation: Nutrition."
Perhaps the book is meant to be read in full before the training program. In that case the pep talks and testimonials are voluminous and a bit mind numbing. It really makes more sense to read these to find support as you progress through the training.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2007-06-22

I'm scheduled to run my first marathon in October. I've looked at various marathon training programs online and in other books, and so far I like this one the best. The training schedule is 4 days a week, and very manageable. I think it might even be a little easy, but that's a good thing for a beginner. It really is important to acclimate yourself to running to avoid injury. I've been running 5 days a week, and I'm finding problems with shin splints, so 5 days a week might be a bit much.

5 out of 5 stars Focus on running, not on time.......2007-06-13

I love this book. I was not at all concerned about running a fantastic time but just wanted to finish the marathon and this book helped me do it! The chapters are written to make you feel as if you are conversing with the authors. The inspirational stories are written by those who have actually taken the class at UNI. I would recommend this to any beginning runner since most marathon plans start with runners that are comfortable running 3-4 miles but if you aren't up to that level yet there is no plan to get you there. This book provides you with a great way to get started even if you've been a lazy bum for awhile (which I was).

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Beginners.......2007-05-31

After reading the reviews of other people who have bought and used this book I took the plunge. I have read a majority of the book and so far it is great. One thing that I have really enjoyed about this book is the way that it motivates. I was running 3 miles every day and did so in reasonable fashion. After reading a few of the chapters my outlook and times have dramatically improved. If you are new to running and are looking for a great training manual, this is your book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb book.......2007-09-19

I used this for my first tri. Harr used a unique approach and asked about 40 questions to categorize your time availability and your current level of fitness. Then he had a program designed specifically to increase your stamina in each discipline. This book was great for learning the basics and understanding about building a 'base' and strengthening yourself. It was helpful for eating habits but should be supplemented with another source. It was recommended to me and I recommend it to my friends.

2 out of 5 stars misleading planning & time frames for a beginner.......2007-09-05

unfortunately, the magical transformation of the author into a competitive athlete is a unique event, not one that readers will replicate easily (or ever!), especially following the plans inside.

the author ignores the base building necessary to race the events. athletes need to train their musculoskeletal structure to take the abuse of workouts as much as they need to get their hearts up to speed. this is best done slowly and incrementally. i think if you have been a regular athlete for at least a year before using the plan in this book, you may be fine.

if you are beginning in any of the three sports, i'd advise another book to show the real process of developing the appropriate base needed to compete without injury. Look up the titles by Joe Friel for more complete information on how to structure a training plan.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Weekend Triathlon Training.......2007-08-12

If you've recently started getting into triathlon then this is the book for you. It is simple, concise, and does an excellent job of bringing beginning triathlon into reach for the everyday joe.
It is broad enough in its content to cover most topics the amateur triathlete needs to know, yet specific in a number of training models to help you select the right program for your body and skill level. Great recommendation here.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for first triathlon.......2007-07-24

I ordered this book a few days too late. I had completed my first sprint distance triathlon and then received the book about 3 days later. After reading it, I found that it would have been extremely useful BEFORE doing my first triathlon and less useful after completing my first triathlon. A lot of the information in there I had now learned by doing. It gives some helpful suggestions, but after doing your first one I feel that there are better books out there for taking you further. After I did my first triathlon and I plan on doing another one, I feel this training plan does not suffice and I will need to search out more elaborate materials. All in all, great book for the beginner triathlete BEFORE their first race, but it's not a bad book if you still have a lot of questions.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book from couch to finish line.......2007-07-10

What a great book for beginners. I completed a sprint distance without books... and than bought this and the triathlete magazine book. This is much more approachable. The book is written in plain english with lots of practical tips.

Only complaint (and this is minor) is that there is very little on recovery.

It is worth 2 or 3X the cost if for no other reason than to provide a calming "voice".

Book Description

During his tenure as track coach at the University of Oregon from 1949 through 1972, Bill Bowerman won 4 national team titles, trained dozens of milers to break the 4-minute barrier, and his athletes set 13 world and 22 American records. Single-handedly he helped turn the college town of Eugene, Oregon, into the running capital of the world. In Bowerman: The Wings of Nike, Kenny Moore, a world-class marathon runner and one of Bowermans Oregon men, tells the story of his mentor and hero, drawing on years of taped interviews and the full cooperation of the Bowerman family and Nike, the company that Bowerman helped to found through his invention of the waffle-soled running shoe. Whether providing a fresh look at the tragic siege at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, where Bowerman coached the track and field team; offering a close-up view of the coachs relationship with runner Steve Prefontaine (subject of the movie Without Limits, co-written and co-produced by Moore); or exploring Bowermans role as a Nike innovator, this illuminating portrait is compelling reading throughoutample evidence of why Bowermans widow, noting how well the author understood her husband, said: If anyone should write Bills life story, its Kenny Moore.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bowerman is alive and well.......2007-09-12

This book was recommended to me, and I am glad I took the recommendation. Kenny Moore, who wrote the screenplay for Without Limits, one of the two Prefontaine movies, does it again. One cautionary note: once you pick this book up be prepared to read for long periods of time without wanting to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars More than another book about runners.......2007-07-04

Bill Bowerman lived an extraordinary life by any standards. He was a top college track coach who won four national NCAA track titles, the Olympic track coach during the fateful Munich Olympics, a decorated officer in the mountain/ski battalion during WWII, a co-founder of Nike, and with his millions from Nike, a generous philanthroper.

Bowerman seemed destined to live a life the generated great fascinating stories. Examples: He was coach to the stormy and supremely talented Steve Prefontaine. He (Bowerman) took on the American Athletic Union and its hypocritical stand on amateurism. He was in love with a woman who love him when he was a quarterback for the University of Oregon at the same time that she also loved the quarterback for the University of Southern California--a man who eventually become president of Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. (The woman decided to marry the winner of the UO-USC football game! I won't tell you how that came out.)

As a result, this book is amazingly enjoyable at multiple levels. The stories are fascinating in their own right, but especially because Bowerman's life had as its backdrop some of the most amazing events in American history: the settling of Oregon, the Olympic movement, the running explosion that helped Nike become a multi-billion-dollar company, World War II, Viet Nam, and unrest among black athletes. The stories are skillfully written by Sports Illustrated writer and Olympic runner Kenny Moore, whom Bowerman coached. The book is also a story about character, integrity, and the winning spirit.

Bowerman and the Men of Oregon is more interesting and exciting than fiction. It's a must read for all athletes, especially runners, and it's a great read for everyone else. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Moore is a genius!.......2007-05-17

This is THE book for anyone who ever ran ladders or repeat quarters (if you don't know what that means, you're still going to enjoy the story).

Had the opportunity to get my copy signed by Kenny recently. I told him that nearly lost my composure when I read the intro; if I would've had someone to tell me to slow down during training, I wouldn't have burned out at age 17.

I was bummed that he didn't include the picture of himself and Frank Shorter after the '72 Olympic Marathon; that shot has to win the award for best athletic facial hair by a duo.

The stories are woven together so masterfully, and it's hard to believe that the book covers a full century in time.

In the acknowledgements, Kenny's small note to the runners of Oregon really speaks volumes; namely, he apologizes for compressing and diluting their stories in order to fit them into the book. Anyone who has lived the life will surely understand the significance of that statement.

"Bowerman" is a collector's piece.

4 out of 5 stars Details galore -- for Oregonians or runners.......2007-04-15

Being a native Oregonian, I loooved reading about the Bowerman family history. As a former runner, I enjoyed reading about the races. The book is very detailed and thorough. It's very well done. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and Inspiring!.......2007-03-20

I "raced" through this book and now plan to re-read in a more "paced" manner. I had read the excerpt printed in Runner's World magazine (Rodale publishes the magazine and also is the book's publisher) and looked forward to the book with high interest.

I very much enjoyed getting to know much more about Bowerman than I had previously. He was a multi-talented, caring (if somewhat imperfect) individual to whom all of us recreational runners owe a huge debt of gratitude.

I was surprised by the sections on Prefontaine, since Mr. Moore was co-author of the script for the movie "Without Limits". The movie painted a slightly darker picture of Pre than does the book. I was thrilled to hear of Pre's charitable interests and his work in bringing the Norwegians to Oregon.

Like other reviewers, I found some of the track info a bit technical for me, but enjoyed it. Also, I was a bit confused by some of the early Bowerman family chapters.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, however. It is a must read for runners of all types and anyone interested in the life story of a truly exceptional person.

Book Description

Dawn Dais hated running. And it didn't like her much, either. Her fitness routine consisted of avoiding the stairs in her own house, because who really has the energy to climb stairs? It was with this exercise philosophy firmly in place that she set off to complete a marathon.
The Nonrunner’s Marathon Guide for Women is a fun training manual for women who don't believe that running is their biological destiny but who dream of crossing the finish line nonetheless. It opens with a realistic training schedule and is chock-full of how-to's, quizzes, and funny observations, which Dais felt were lacking in the guides she had consulted.
The Nonrunner’s Marathon Guide for Women also integrates entries from Dias' journal, sharing everything would-be marathoners need to know about the gear, the blisters, the early morning workouts, the late-night carb binges, and — most important of all — the amazing rewards.
Anyone can do a marathon. This book just makes the experience a little more bearable and a lot more fun.

5 out of 5 stars Hysterical Motivational!.......2007-08-19

Motivational and hysterical. Dawn Dais does an excellent job of cronicaling a first time runner's adventure with the marathon. If you need extra motivation and a good chuckle, this is a great resource to help pry you out of your recliner and keep you working towards race day.

5 out of 5 stars i can't stop laughing... and then i run!.......2007-08-01

I'm the epitome of a "Non-runner." That's why this book grabbed my eye.

But seriously, I couldn't stop laughing when I read this book. Dais' sarcastic, dry sense of humor has motivated me to run the half-marathon. I think I've gotten a jump-start on my ab muscles from all the laughter!

This book is a great reference guide for all of your running questions - and with a little chuckle! You gotta love it - especially since you've decided to do something as crazy as running a marathon!

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Very good book, my wife loved it!.......2007-07-22

I bought this book as a gift for my wife who's starting now to train for her 1st marathon and she literally read it in one weekend! It is ironic, but also full of interesting comments for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-10-03

This is a good adjunct to the "Triathletes Training Bible". She works with Friel's training concepts and adds meat to them with specific daily/weekly work out plans. She has specific plans for various distances (sprint, olympic, 1/2 and full Ironman), events (Tri and Duo), and various preparation time periods (12 weeks to 6 months to full year). I think she also incorporates some of the efficiency techniques suggested in Niles "Time Saving Training" and mentions his book as a good resource. It's a well written and interesting book with lots of good info and help in laying out your training and establishing a workable long term plan.

5 out of 5 stars Training Plans for Multisport Athletes: Your Essential Guide to Triathlon, Duathlon, XTERRA, Ironman, and Endurance Racing .......2007-09-13

I was looking for a comprehensive training plan for one year, most books will offer a 12-16 week program. This book delivered the full plan, and I have used it as a beginner triathlete to prepare for multiple sprint and olympic distance races. The nutrition chapter is also excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book with easy to follow training plans.......2007-06-22

I've bought a few triathlon training books in my day, and most of them are just full of theory, scientific jargon and a lot of technical nonsense. This book, however, lists everything in an easy to follow fashion, from proper nutrition to how your body type will react to training. And the best thing about this book are the endless training plans that it includes (from sprint to full Ironman), for those who are just starting out to those who have done this for a while and just want to get faster. Plus it lists training for Xterra-type races and duathlons as well, which I definitely want to participate in. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent training source.......2007-06-09

I bought this book to help with my half-ironman training. It's excellent for all different triathalons!!! Wonderfully written with a ton of information.

5 out of 5 stars This book packs in a lot of information..........2007-05-30

In her book, Training Plans for Multisport Athletes, Gale Bernhardt offers great tips, instruction, and structured training plans that cover many multisport distances. As a reader will note, Gale is a disciple of and now contemporary to Joe Friel; so, the owner of Friel's "Bible" will feel instantly at ease reading and understanding Gale's perspective on preparing for multisport competition.

At the same time, a complete neophyte could pick up this book and quickly get up to speed on his/her journey down the multisport path. Gale's writing style is easy to understand and the paths she lays out vis a vis her plans are easy to follow.

This is a great book that will benefit new multisport participants as well as seasoned veterans.

4 out of 5 stars basics.......2007-07-05

If you want to do a triathlon and were not sure, this book will give you the information you will need.

2 out of 5 stars I know it's for beginners, but really........2007-05-17

The info was way too basic. Hardly anything on swim stroke. Find something else unless you don't even know what a tri is.

5 out of 5 stars A Beginner's Triathlon Trainer.......2007-04-10

Get yourself to the starting line with these helpful training tips and calendar. Helpful drills to get you in shape for your first triathlon are also included.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-03-03

More than any other peice of equipment, this book definitely gave me what I needed to get to the starting line. It gave me the confidence that I would need to finish my first tri. The book was definitely for me, the person who really doesn't know much about how to even start my training. The drills were helpful and the training calendar worked well to get me to my goal.

But, it is not without it's flaws. As already mentioned in other reviews, swimming is not covered enough to really help you out. My only real struggle was in the swim and his lack emphasis may have led to some over confidence from the attitude her presents. Also, the simplistic way it covered the training regimine was not helpful; I never understood why the drills I was doing were going to help.

5 out of 5 stars Practical.......2006-11-20

I found this book a valuable help for who is new to Triathlon and also for starting from scratch both running and cycling (NOT for swimming).
Maybe too much enphasis on nutrition, but averall it's a very practical and usful book. Good value for your money.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful motivator.......2007-10-07

I will not bother going on and on about the book, since there is already such an overwhelmingly positive collection of reviews.

Suffice it to say, this book really kick-started by love of running, and was filled with everything the beginner needs to know.

While it could use illustrations for good stretches, for example, it is still the classic keystone in any runners library, and strongly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Probably the only running reference you'll need.......2007-06-04

If you have any sort of interest in running, I can't recommend any book more enthusiastically than this one. Although it may seem strange to get a book about running--I mean, what is there to it, right? But it turns out there are a couple of good reasons to pick up a book on running: one, it's motivating; two, there is a ton of useful information crammed into this book. It will be the only running reference you'll ever really need.

With over 700 pages, this isn't a lightweight book. It truly is about as comprehensive as you can imagine, and will serve most runners more than sufficiently. It is an oddly engaging read, sucking you into the world of running (or jogging) while giving you all sorts of information you never even thought you could need. Everything the beginner could need is covered, from the minutae of day-to-day running (track etiquitte, cold weather clothing, eating, and on and on) to larger topics like training plans and moving into competitive racing. The book will take you all the way through intermediate running--which Glover defines as regular sustained running, maybe with an occasional race thrown in. If you are already an experienced or regular runner, you will probably find this less useful than the true beginner. However, no one but the most experienced coach would be unable to learn something from this book. Just be aware that it is geared towards the recreational runner; if you are looking for a reference specific to competitive running, you should look elsewhere.

There are 42 chapters in the book, divided into 12 major sections: Fitness, Getting Fit, Training, Racing, Equipment, Food and Drink for Health and Energy, The Running Environment, Running Lifestyle, Special Runners, Illness and Injury, Running Form and Supplemental Training, and Wellness. The three chapters in the Fitness section give you basic information about what exercise and fitness are and why all of us ought to get out there and move a bit more. The third chapter outlines various ways to measure your own current level of fitness, providing a useful set of technique that you can come back to as your level of fitness improves (with your running, of course). The chapters in the next continue along this same vein, first dealing with getting started on a fitness regime (rather relaxed or intense) and then keeping yourself motivated enough to stick with it. The principles of exercise are outlined, with an entire chapter devoted to the important three-part model: warm-up, run, and cool-down. The last chapter in the Getting Fit section is called "The Fit Prescription: How Often? How Fast? How Far?" This is an important chapter, since beginners do often struggle with finding the right balance, either overdoing it and burning out, or not working hard enough to get the desired results. The last section in the book, Wellness, goes into more depth on all of these ideas. The chapters cover a holistic approach to health and fitness, the cardiovascular aspects of running, stress and weight management. The final chapter, "Running Inside Your Head", deals more emotional aspects of running: how it can help with depressions, anxiety, self-esteem, and creative thinking, and finally moving onto the infamous "runner's high". It's an interesting read.

Parts III and IV take the ideas of the last chapter of Section II and run with them. In part III, Training, you will learn how to keep a good runner's diary and find three running training programs: beginner's, advanced beginner's (for more running-experienced readers), and intermediate. Glover helps readers identify which program (and where in the program) they ought to begin. He also convincingly argues for patience in building up ability before trying to progress. Then in Section Iv, he talks to both those who may be interested in moving into competitive running, and those who may just like more structured goals. Racing isn't always about competition, for instance. So he addresses both frequent 5k races and marathons, giving the reader many ideas of why they may want to participate in either. Finally, there is a chapter on the importance of speed training, which will be useful to any runner who wants to learn to run faster, for whatever reason. Part XI, Running Form and Supplemental Training, gives four chapters with further training information, and serves as a great supplement to those who have mastered.

Three sections of the book deal with wider running lifestyle issues, including Part VI (Food and Drink for Health and Energy), Part VIII (Running Lifestyle), and Part X (Illness and Injury). The section on food and drink includes chapters on basic nutrition as relates to running, food and drink that serves as running-specific "fuel", and the importance on good hydration in running. The Running Lifestyle part covers safety, running while traveling, managing time (as in life in general, and working running in), and the importance of balancing running with life and work. Part X addresses two issues that we'd rather be able to ignore, but shouldn't . Illness is just a human thing, and sometimes it's best to not run--Glover will convince you whan that's the case. Injury is a similar issue, as we will inevitably get hurt at some point, and while we can sometimes work through things, more often than not we will be better served to allow ourselves to heal.

The remaining sections deal with more specific, and generally pragmatic, issues. Part V, Equipment, discusses running shoes and apparel and how to choose what is best for you. These obviously aren't going to give you extremely personalized information, but the important things for you to consider are all identified. You will feel much more confident the next time you go into a running shoe store. The Running Environment, Part VII, covers environmental issues, which are very import for runners. After all, most of the time, we're running outside. People tend to overdress for cold weather, and Glover gives numerous tips for avoiding this (and he will make you much more comfortable giving cold weather running a shot if you're still a bit intimidated). The chapter on hot weather running is also very important, andprovides readers with better ideas of how to manage hydration and exhaustion in uncomfortable climates. There is also a chapter on handling the unpredictability of weather in general. Finally, the ninth section offers four chapters on specific categories of runners: women runners (including an interesting history of women and running, health issues specific to women that may impact running, like osteoporosis, pregnancy, and menopause); older runners (covering the impact that agining in general can have on running as well as the benefits); runners with specific health or physical limitations (including topics such as chronic health conditions like asthma, arthritis, or diabetes, as well as other phsyical issues such as hearing and visual impairments); and younger (child) runners (covering both running with kids in strollers and health and safety issues specific to child runners, reminding us that "children are not minature adults").

As some of the other reviewers have alluded to, this is a strangely addictive and exciting book. You wouldn't think so (I certainly did not). But the writing is excellent, and a very nice balance between a packed informative tone and an amusing anecdotal style is maintained throughout. Glover knows how to motivate, and if you are like me, you will find yourself reading this entire book in a series of sizable chunks, and then going back later and rereading parts as your running experience expands. You've got to take some breaks to actually run, right? I can sum up my opinion of this book with one simple statement: if you are the least bit interested in running, buy this book and you will soon be a knowledgeable and active runner.

5 out of 5 stars Great "NO-NONSENSE" training concepts.......2007-05-20

I bought this book about six weeks ago, and have been working my way through the routines for exactly 4 weeks as of this post. I have lost 14 lbs simply by following the directions, not pushing myself to injury, and using the proper equipment such as good running shoes and appropriate clothing. The book teaches running and fitness in a manner where most anyone, whom is willing to follow the directions, with the desire and self-determination to increase their fitness levels can see results. I can't say anything else cause the rest is pretty much covered in other user reviews. The book is inexpensive and worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!!!.......2007-05-15

The Runner's Handbook is a great resource for both the beginner and those of us who have been running for quite sometime (but not part of the elite group). Although I've had it for quite a while now, I constantly refer back to it especially for the nutritional information. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good value.......2007-03-28

The book is great, it answers most if not all of your questions. Helps you to start up, helps with smooth transition from couch potato to runner. And, most important, prevents you from many mistakes, injuries and wrongdoing.

"Competitive running gives your running life a focus. Competition measures progress. You set a goal and accomplish it." Bob Glover and Shelly-lynn Florence Glover, authors of The Competitive Runner's Handbook, know what they're talking about. Bob has run competitively for nearly 40 years, coached for 30 years, and completed more than 30 marathons, while Shelly-lynn has raced for more than 20 years and is an exercise physiologist with a master's degree from Columbia University. They've coauthored several books on running. Clocking in at over 600 pages, The Handbook covers basic training techniques, gives tips on speed training, and outlines regimens for specific races: short, 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon. There are also sections on motivation and the mental aspects of competitive running, proper running form, nutrition, dealing with illness and injury, and more. In addition, the book includes many helpful charts. Straightforward and authoritative, this is a comprehensive reference guide that's suited to runners of all levels. --Andy Boynton

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very thorough but a little dated.......2007-10-03

When I bought this book I was just starting to run longer distances and hadn't been in any races, so I wasn't the target audience. If you are like me. you'll be a little unsure what your 10K pace is, for example, because you may never have run one. But if you think you're going to be in races and care about your time, I would suggest that this book is worth buying and reading even if those are still in your future.

The book is also kind of old-fashioned, based on what I've picked up elsewhere. It focuses on total weekly mileage more than seems to be in fashion these days, for example, and that approach may not work for those like me who are getting into this at an older age (I'm 46). It also talks about calling race organizers on the phone rather than looking at the race's website, which seems kind of quaint in 2007.

What's really good about it is that it covers so much. It gave me a lot of good tips for little things to remember before my first race (the San Francisco Half Marathon). It gives guidance for many different lengths of races. It talks about injuries and other issues that may come up. It even talks about balancing running with the rest of your life.

With a good update this would be a 5 star book, and even as it is, it's well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for a novice.......2007-07-26

I absolutely loved this book. After reading it I felt that I was far more prepared to both physically and mentally take on a marathon. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is starting to run and wants to get ready for any length of race.

Be aware that this is not a comprehensive guide, you should look elsewhere for information on nutrition or lifting. But if you are looking for a solid running guide, this is the right book for.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for running any distance.......2007-06-22

This book is great. It has lots of details on training, physiology, diet, recovery, pacing, and everything else you can think of pertaining to running. The charts show you if you finished a race at one distance, how that translates into times for other distances, which is very helpful. This book doesn't give a bunch of feel-good you-can-do-it rah-rah, it gives detailed, specific information on how to run faster, how to run longer, how to run if undertrained, etc, etc. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for compettive running.......2007-06-01
