Book Description
Celiac Disease (CD) is one of the most common and under–diagnosed, hereditary autoimmune condition in the U.S. today. Recent studies reveal that 1 in every 100 people suffer from CD. And 97% of them are undiagnosed. The average time to diagnosis is currently 9 years. In the case of CD (also known as gluten intolerance), the body damages or destroys the very mechanism that enables us to digest food. The primary target of injury is the small intestine. Triggered by gluten, the main protein found in wheat, rye and barley, the disease damages the small intestine so that it is unable to properaly absorb nutrients.
This is the first authoritative guide to CD co–authored by an internationally renowned specialist on the disease. Dr. Peter Green and writer Rory Jones help readers to identify the symptoms, understand their diagnosis and cope with the challenges of living with CD. Incredibly comprehensive, yet accessible and user friendly, this book covers the disease from a medical, dietary and psychological standpoint. It explores all aspects of CD from the often "silent" symptoms and proper diagnostic procedures to the many related conditions and specific diet. The book also includes appendices on related articles and books of interest, medical contact information and a list national CD support groups.

I Must Have if You're Living with Celiac Disease.......2007-10-07
This is a good, informative, layman language book. It gives you such a good grounding in how your body is responding to gluten and how your body works. It will answer most of your questions and give you a solid base from which to make decisions about your treatment and your health. It is a must have for Celiacs, or anyone who loves one.
Good Data.......2007-06-28
THIS BOOK SHOULD BE READ BY ALL FAMILY DOCTORS> The book contains information on how Gluten effects the body in ways other than just the intestenal tract.
Insightful.......2007-06-27
After having Celiac Disease for almost 25 years, this book was a good review of the state of medicine, thoughts on linkages to other auto-immune diseases as well as diseases in general and the "revised" celiac diet that is used today vs the one I have been on which was stricter.
Excellent celiac book.......2007-05-13
This book, A Hidden Epidemic, by Dr. Peter Green is a very useful book and has much information in it about celiac. I have recommended this to several people new to celiac and they too agree that this has so much information in it relating to celiac. Very helpful.
Leads to an understanding of the current knowledge..........2007-05-12
Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic was an excellent source of information regarding the topic. Written with what seems to be the most current state of understanding of this condition, this book was penned with the layman in mind. However, there is enough detail in the book to challenge the reader to do some research on their own. It is easy to read and if you are afflicted with any of the celiac-related conditions, you will burn through the book quickly. If you have or are interested in Celiac conditions, this book should be your starting place.

Book Description
Autism is an epidemic: It has spiked 1,500 percent in the last twenty years. ADHD, asthma and allergies have also skyrocketed over the same time period. One of these conditions now strikes one in every three children in America. But there is hope. Leading medical innovator Kenneth Bock, M.D., has helped change the lives of more than a thousand children, and in this important book, with a comprehensive program that targets all four of the 4-A disorders, he offers help to children everywhere. This is the book that finally puts hope within reach.
Doctors have generally overlooked the connections among the 4-A disorders, despite their concurrent rise and the presence of many medical clues. For years the medical establishment has considered autism medically untreatable and utterly incurable, and has limited ADHD treatment mainly to symptom suppression. Dr. Bock and his colleagues, however, have discovered a solution – one that goes to the root of the problem. They have found that deadly modern toxins, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities and assaults on the immune and gastrointestinal systems trigger most of the symptoms of the 4-A disorders, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and untold misery.
Dr. Bock’s remarkable Healing Program, drawing on medical research and based on years of clinical success, offers a safe, sensible solution that is individualized to each child to help remedy these root causes. The biomedical approach to autism, ADHD, and the other 4-A epidemics, as innovated by Dr. Bock and some of America’s finest integrative physicians, is one of the most promising and exciting medical movements of our time.
In this eminently readable account, written by Dr. Bock in collaboration with critically acclaimed author Cameron Stauth, you will meet children and parents whose dramatic stories will inspire you to change the life of your own child. This program may be the help that you have been praying for.

Real tools to improve life.......2007-09-26
With the library book still sitting on my desk I am purchasing a copy of my own. While I have always been thankful (and blissfully ignorant) that MY kids haven't needed all those restricted diets or been negatively impacted by vaccinations, this book has helped open my eyes and really look at the health of my family. I am thankful to find an abundant source of information that is geared towards HEALING the ROOT CAUSES of illnesses in our children. Pediatric medicine is filled with caring doctors who help treat symptom after symptom, infection after infection as seperate pieces of a complete body. This book details complicated approaches to treat an entire child, not just medical conditions that have become alarmingly common and acceptable.
I would have paid $1,000 for this book! All of our children are in grave danger, and we MUST protect them! Everyone read this!!!.......2007-09-16
Would you pay $17 to save your child from a life of chronic illness?? Of course you would! I am a well educated person in the medical field, and this book blew me away! I thought that the vaccination controversy was just parents finding something to blame for their sick kids, because physicans assure that they are safe. Well, guess what?? The government drastically changed the vaccination schedule in 1991, and the way that they administer them now, is harming our children! 2 studies of populations that do not vaccinate, had NO cases of autism!! Autism in our country has increased by 6,000%, and it is not the type that you are born with-that is still EXTREMELY rare! There is an epidemic of illnesses that are negatively affecting our children, and this book addresses all of them, as well as how to heal them! Our children's immune systems are being viciously attacked by a combination of toxins, and they are being severely injured. This book does a fabulous job of covering each in detail, from the negative impact of vaccines (our children were administered huge amounts of toxins); the epidemic of food allergies, which causes everything from ADHD, to learning and behavioral problems; the toxins in our food: from the antibiotics and hormones that are in our meat supply, to the pesticides and chemicals that are in everything else; and the toxins in our water and air. The reason that you don't hear about these things, is that our medical system and government are run by big business. There is money to be lost by natural therapies, and eating pure foods, because there is no pill to prescribe! There is a huge coverup in play, and we MUST educate ourselves and be our own advocates! Even if your child, (or yourself for that matter) are currently healthy, chances are, you won't be for long!! Your child can be a totally "normal" two year old, and then lose speech, mobility, and social interaction skills and become a shell of what they once were! ADHD and Asthma are increased by 400%! If you are a parent, or even know people with children, you need to read this book! If we don't do something drastic now, we are going to have an entire society with chronic illnesses, and our country will be severely affected! We need to be armed with knowledge and band together to fight the system, and protect all of us! I implore you to read this book, and tell everyone that you know- you will not be sorry!!
Wonderful, coherent book.......2007-08-25
I love this book. Dr. Bock discusses treatments for autism and intermingles it with personal stories of past patients. Then the second half of the book, he lists out the supplements, what they do and what to give them for. He gives case studies. This is one of those books that is always out on my desk, because I am constantly referencing it. I have gotten plenty of good advice from the book that has not only benefitted my autistic child, but also the general health of my other two children. In addition to this book, I recommend "Children With Starving Brains".
Dr. Bock is a miracle worker!.......2007-06-12
My 3 year old son was diagnosed with autism at 20 months and has been Dr. Bock's patient for 1 1/2 years. His book is a miracle for all parents with children on the autism spectrum or related diagnoses. His treatment is simple yet extraordinary in bringing about changes and recovery in children. My son was mute, violent, refused to eat or sleep before Dr. Bock's treatment- now, 1 1/2 years later, he's ready to be mainstreamed into preschool. He has performed miracles with my son, simply by recognizing the root causes of my son's condition and treating it simply through diet, supplement therapy and removing metals. He makes no promises, but I can tell you from our experience that he has truly worked miracles for my son and our family!
Book Review.......2007-05-29
Excellent information on Autism, ADHD, Allergies and Asthma. With the current epidemic of these disorders the information presented is timely and very hopeful for those afflicted with these conditions. Utilizing expertise from both the medical and alternative camps, many useful strategies are presented. I highly recommend this book for parents and professionals working with the Four A's.
Book Description
Why do so many world-changing insights come from people with little or no related experience? Charles Darwin was a geologist when he proposed the theory of evolution. And it was an astronomer who finally explained what happened to the dinosaurs.
Frans Johansson’s The Medici Effect shows how breakthrough ideas most often occur when we bring concepts from one field into a new, unfamiliar territory, and offers examples how we can turn the ideas we discover into path-breaking innovations.
Customer Reviews:
Better than it would appear.......2007-10-01
This book is about developing ideas. It starts out very slowly and it seems like just another rehash of the tales told a hundred times before. It goes through the normal diversity is better arguement, which is a plus and a minus (he never gives us the minus). But as the book develops he provides a family of keen insights. He reviews much of the literature in an interesting way. Even old news is presented nicely. For example, at this point most people know that brainstorming does not really get you anywhere. Indeed, individuals will come up with more ideas than a team all working together, one after the other. He goes through this and then suggests alternatives. By the time I was done with the book I was impressed and I would recommend it to others.
Nice Book.......2007-08-01
You actually feel inspired when reading it. Just get done and you'l feel real effect.
Good for getting in an innovative and integrative mindset.......2007-06-04
This book was really easy to get through and I came away thinking more about how to keep my mind open to ideas from lots of different disciplines. It provides good examples of cross-discipline collaboration and why you should care. The book provides a few little tricks to get you thinking in a different way, but I found the subject matter itself to be more inspiring than directly applicable.
Interesting, thought provoking and you really can learn "creativity" from it .......2007-03-13
Copied from pg 2, "The idea behind this book is simple: When you step into an intersection of fields, disciplines, or cultures, you can combine existing concepts into a large number of extraordinary new ideas." Somehow you may vaguely have a similar concept as the author's in mind. What he did much more than the rest is that he had studied and consolidated on it, given it a an exotic name "The Medici Effect", and furnished it with plenty of vivid, interesting and memorable examples for others, presumably less bright people like me, to read and follow. In short, quite outstanding in the sea of books on creativity and innovation. Really helpful! Highly recommended!
Ultimately society decides whether an idea is both new and valuable...It is impossible to determine if a person's products are innovative if they have never been seen, used, or evaulated. pg 15
In essence, these people (Marcus Samuelsson, Charles Darwin) succeeded at breaking down their associative barriers because they did one or more of the following things: exposed themselves to a range of cultures; learned differently; reversed their assumptions;, took on multiple perspectives. pg 45
The most successful innovators produce and realize an incredible number of ideas....Pablo Picasso produced 20,000 pieces of art; Einstein wrote more than 240 papers; Bach wrote a cantata every week; Thomas Edison filed a record 1,039 patents. This holds true today. Prince is said to have over 1,000 songs stored in his secret vault, and Richard Branson has started 250 companies. pg 91
Research has shown, in fact, that the vast majority of successful new business ventures abandoned their original business strategies when they began implementing their initial plans and learned what would and would not work in the market. The dominant difference between successful and failed ones, generally, is not their original strategy. Guessing the right strategy at the outset is not nearly as important to success as conserving enough resources (or having relationships with trusted backers or investors) so that new business initiatives get a second or third stab at getting it right. Those that run out of resources or credibility before they can iterate towards a new strategy are the ones that will fail. - Clayton Christensen pg 130
Risk homoeostatis: people will compensate for taking higher risks in one area of life by taking lower risks in another. - Gerald Wilde pg 167
The most effective way to combat fear is to acknowledge it...For starters, you have to come to terms with what is at stake and admit that you might lose it. Often this means that you must be comfortable enough to know that if everything is lost, you can still move on. pg 180
interesting book but need to be better.......2007-03-04
1. the author have something to say, and he say it in a easy way that friendly to understand. it's good. But the author seems too hush to run into the conclusion, it seems if he spend more time in detail study, this book will be much better;
2. For the same topic, I suggest "A Technique for Producing Ideas" which is short but powerful; and it from a master's hand, if you compare that book with "Medici Effect", you will find how good it is, ;-);

On the heels of her acclaimed contemporary teen novel Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson surprises her fans with a riveting and well-researched historical fiction. Fever 1793 is based on an actual epidemic of yellow fever in Philadelphia that wiped out 5,000 people--or 10 percent of the city's population--in three months. At the close of the 18th century, Philadelphia was the bustling capital of the United States, with Washington and Jefferson in residence. During the hot mosquito-infested summer of 1793, the dreaded yellow fever spread like wildfire, killing people overnight. Like specters from the Middle Ages, gravediggers drew carts through the streets crying "Bring out your dead!" The rich fled to the country, abandoning the city to looters, forsaken corpses, and frightened survivors.
In the foreground of this story is 16-year-old Mattie Cook, whose mother and grandfather own a popular coffee house on High Street. Mattie's comfortable and interesting life is shattered by the epidemic, as her mother is felled and the girl and her grandfather must flee for their lives. Later, after much hardship and terror, they return to the deserted town to find their former cook, a freed slave, working with the African Free Society, an actual group who undertook to visit and assist the sick and saved many lives. As first frost arrives and the epidemic ends, Mattie's sufferings have changed her from a willful child to a strong, capable young woman able to manage her family's business on her own. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
During the summer of 1793, Mattie Cook lives above the family coffee shop with her widowed mother and grandfather. Mattie spends her days avoiding chores and making plans to turn the family business into the finest Philadelphia has ever seen. But then the fever breaks out.
Disease sweeps the streets, destroying everything in its path and turning Mattie's world upside down. At her feverish mother's insistence, Mattie flees the city with her grandfather. But she soon discovers that the sickness is everywhere, and Mattie must learn quickly how to survive in a city turned frantic with disease.
Customer Reviews:
The Amazing fever.......2007-08-03
A well written book. This story is about Matilda, a teenage girl who survives the fever of 1793. It is surprising how many people the fever killed. I think this is a very good historical fiction book.
What Would You Do?.......2007-06-21
I live near Philadelphia. 1.5 million people live in philly these days, and if the epidemic that Fever 1793 describes were to happen today, in 90 days, 150,000 people would die and 700,000 people would flee. Look at those numbers and ponder - if you lived there, what would you do?
The story is told, as was Speak, from the point of view of a very believable teenaged girl. From her fights with her mother to her flirts with her beau to the very way she survives the plague and finds herself in the process, Mattie is a compelling heroine. In fact, I have great respect for Ms. Anderson; she writes the point of view of a teenaged girl so well that I almost feel 15 again.
Though some would call the story predictable, I found that the (very well researched) historical perspective and plethora of factual information was almost overwhelming. If the plot had been too intricate, the book would have been lost. As it is, through the comfort of a steady plot, a fantastic story is told.

Fever 1793.......2007-06-05
Fever 1793 is a book about a teenage girl growing up in Pennsylvania in, of course, 1793. Mattie Cook was living a perfectly normal life when one day a very bad fever starts to spread, and Mattie's world turns upside down.
I think that Fever 1793 is a very well written book. The way Laurie H. Andersen describes things is wonderful. It is the kind of book that once you pick it up, you can just not put it down. The beginning doesn't grab you so well but once you read a few chapters, you get more of a feel for the characters. I enjoyed this book because it seemed to pull me into the pages like I was right there when it all happened. I would recommend this book to people who like to be sucked up in their reading. However, I would not recommend this book to people younger than 7, because some of it is sad, and some is a little scary. As the New York Times Book Review says "the plot rages like the epidemic itself."
Predictable Historical Fiction.......2007-06-04
Mattie has never been much of an independent girl. She hasn't had the opportunity to be, with her mother always on top of her, telling her what to do. Her mother is a widow who runs a coffeehouse in Philadelphia. The year is 1793 and there is always much work to be done. Mattie's mother is used to ordering Mattie, Mattie's grandfather and the two girls who work there, Eliza and Polly, around. Then in August of 1793 the yellow fever comes to Philadelphia. At first just a few people are sick here and there. Then they begin to die in hundreds and thousands. When several people they know have been struck by the fever, Mattie's mother begins to worry. When she herself is struck, she sends Mattie and her grandfather out to the country where they will be safe from the sickness.
But other towns know about the fever and they have guards posted at the entryways of their towns. They are suspicious of Mattie's grandfather's cough, and don't allow him in. Mattie and her grandfather are abandoned by the people in whose wagon they had been traveling, and Mattie herself begins feeling sick. The next thing she knows, she is recovering in a public hospital with other fever victims. She has been one of the lucky ones to survive. When she makes her way back to Philadelphia, she finds that her mother has gone to the country to meet up with her. She has no way of getting there and no way to inform her mother she is alive. Now may be her chance to take care of things at home and prove that she is an adult.
I liked the historical aspect of this book, and especially the appendix, which told about the history behind the things mentioned in the book. The story was a bit predictable, though, and I didn't like the romance between Mattie and Nathaniel. There was no real explanation for it and it didn't really develop.
Fever 1793.......2007-05-19
Fever 1793 is one of the best books I've read. I love all of the books that Laurie Halse Anderson writes. I love how they relate to teen life and what teens are going through.
It would be tough living during such a big epidemic, like having your family members die one by one or right in front of your face. Imagine how hard it would be if you had do try to survive during yellow fever.
What I don't get is how yellow fever spread so fast. And if you got the fever from mosquitoes then how could you get it from other people?
If you liked this book I would recommend reading the books Speak or Prom also by Anderson.
Book Description
The book that will change the way we think about health and illness, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Healing Back Pain
The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John E. Sarno's long and successful career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer. While his earlier books dealt almost exclusively with the common, virtually universal musculoskeletal pain disorders affecting the back, neck, and shoulders as well as various locations in the arms and legs, in The Divided Mind, Dr. Sarno goes beyond pain and addresses the entire spectrum of psychosomatic (mindbody) disorders. These include common stomach and bowel conditions (e.g., gastric reflux, irritable bowel syndrome), allergies, skin disorders, genitourinary conditions, headaches, and many more.
In Dr. Sarno's view, the crucial interaction between the generally reasonable, rational, ethical, and moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind appears to be the basis for mindbody disorders. The Divided Mind traces the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud's crucial role as well as his failures. Most important, it describes the psychology of the human condition that is responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. Dr. Sarno believes that the failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mindbody disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions in the United States.
One of the most interesting and important aspects of psychosomatic phenomena is the fact that knowledge and awareness of the process clearly have healing powers. Thousands of people have become pain-free simply by reading Healing Back Pain or The Mindbody Prescription, Dr. Sarno's previous books. How and why this happens is a fascinating story, and one that is sure to be repeated as readers experience The Divided Mind.
Customer Reviews:
Review of The Divided Mind.......2007-09-04
This excellent book, which in the first portion summarizes the findings of John Sarno, unfortunately assumes having read one of his earlier books, The Mind-Body Prescription, which better tells the theory. Still, I think anyone reading it would benefit, though not nearly as much as someone who had read the earlier work. My comments refer to Sarno's own writing only. The work of the other authors in the text are worth reading and make a valuable contribution to the study of repressed emotions as a cause of illness, if not the only cause. Someone should write an account that attempts to balance Sarno's views with the structuralist position, which applies to pain other than that induced by repressed emotions. Still, Sarno's views seem to account better for pain overall than mainstream medical works, yet his views will probably be dismissed by most structuralists unwisely. Sarno's views relate to the psychological causes of pain while the structural position pertain only to anatomical ones--the mainstream view. Anyone with some psychological training might be greatly impressed by Sarno's theory and should work hard to balance it. Reading the books helped reduce some of my own pain of long standing.
The Divided Mind: The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders.......2007-07-05
This will be a very short review but hopefully helpful. This book was actually a gift for my 87 year old mother-in-law. She is an avid reader and felt any age reader would enjoy this book. It addresses the mind and and the huge part it plays in the healing process. I will certainly read it when I get a chance.
Thank you
David Clardy
Dr. Sarno's work finally expanded upon to help those who are suffering far too long.......2007-04-12
Although this book is written with Doctors in mind, it is wonderful to see how Dr. Sarno's work is being adapted and used in the medical community not just to treat pain, but other syndromes via both drug and non-drug therapies.
However, for serious patients who are looking for something more directed towards them I would recommend an earlier book by Dr. Sarno, "The Mindbody Prescription: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain".
URGENT.......2007-01-25
Urgent, this book will really change your life, if you can give an open mind to Dr Sarno's thesis about the origin of so much pain. Enough said!
Grateful Dr. Sarno and his book cured my back pain.......2007-01-25
I was having excruciating pain in my right buttock area and an MRI showed a herniated disc. Well of course after phys therapy, steroids, etc., surgery was the option left. Just the word surgery made my pain worse and I was really scared.
I first read Mind Over Back Pain, then in chron order, Dr. Sarno's other books, this one being the latest. I enjoyed how he shared the new things he learned in each book. I then said to myself this could be TMS (tension myositis syndrome--pain caused by oxygen deprivation to muscle or nerve or tendon or ligament due to brain). I decided to see Dr. Sarno and was diagnosed thankfully with TMS. He did look at my MRI and said the herniation was large, but likely not the cause of my pain. I have followed his study program which is outlined well in this book and 2 weeks later the pain is basically gone. I am able to walk or sit with no burning or pain, even drive, which I had not done for weeks.
Dr. Sarno's conviction in what he is doing and saying was thrilling to witness. And unlike other doctors, there is no "it could be . . . " and so "try this . . ." It is "you have TMS", this is why, and here is what to do. I loved hearing that from him.
I highly recommend all his books. I am grateful to Dr. Sarno for writing these books and helping me be pain-free and I've told him so!
I was NOT a skeptic from the beginning, however, as I believe strongly that our mind (emotion) affects our body. If you are open to learning how you can realize and accept things about yourself, your life, and your childhood, read Dr. Sarno's books.
I am thrilled I am pain-free with no surgery!
So many people have similar problems and pains, but I have seen that some are not willing to accept that their mind plays a major role and there is personal work involved.
I highly recommend this book. There is explanation of TMS, whom it affects and what to do about it, other doctors' experiences, history of other professionals (living and deceased) realizing the brain plays a part in our physical health, letters from patients, etc. It is a great book. Read it and see for yourself.
Book Description
At the height of WWI, historyÂ's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in twenty-four months than AIDS killed in twenty-four years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision of science and epidemic disease. Magisterial in its breadth of perspective and depth of research and now revised to reflect the growing danger of the avian flu, The Great Influenza is ultimately a tale of triumph amid tragedy, which provides us with a precise and sobering model as we confront the epidemics looming on our own horizon.

The real version of "The Stand" by Stephen King.......2007-09-11
I really enjoyed this book as it showed in real life how fast a flu epidemic can spread. One has to realize that this epidemic took place in basically horse and buggy days, people did not travel as much. If you look into your family history, as I did, you may find a relative who died during this time period. After I read this book I discovered a graveyard for a turn of the century orphanage. There were so many children that died, all they could do is put numbers on the gravestones. It made me think how fast a flu epidemic could travel today. The references and facts were an eye opener.
Wow! Very Important Read.......2007-08-31
This book will definitely really make you reconsider the vulnerability of society to an epidemic. What really surprised me was how this single epidemic really kick-started the modern health care system. I had no idea that 100 years ago, it was easier to get certified to be a doctor than it was to go to college - quite literally one could go through a correspondence course. It also traces the development and speaks to the foundation of institutions who, our time, are revered for their stature in modern medicine, such as John Hopkins. It covers a great many aspects of medicine and epidemiology. What this book does best, and is truly refreshing for a history book, is provide insight into the thinking of the time - what role politics and political decisions made in the outbreaks in certain cities. What is truly horrifying is how really vulnerable populations are to influenza. Although we understand it better, actual treatment is still quite limited (prevention seems to be the best hope). A small mutation in the virus could again hammer populations around the world. I took on this book because my grandfather's family was so badly devastated by it. I never really asked enough about it before he passed away and now I wish I had. I recommend this book to anyone interested in epidemiology, medicine, particularly how medicine has advanced in the last 100 years, particularly in the US, or if, like me, your family history may have been effected by this. The most frightening aspect is the astounding speed with which this virus spread and the corresponding mortality rate that it brought with it. Tie that in with its extreme, and I mean extreme contagiousness and one finds a really frightening scenario. I can't imagine a world where people are dying so fast they can't even bury the bodies, doctors and nurses are afflicted so badly that they die almost as fast as the patients, that almost nobody really understands how the contagion is spread and people shun one another - neighbors, even family members. What is even more frightening is that this happened less than one hundred years ago. It really makes you think. It really makes you consider how truly vulnerable we all are.
a true horror story.......2007-08-17
First, with all the fearmongering about pandemics in the last couple of years, it is nice to read about the most deadly epidemic the world has ever known. It's not real comforting, but it is better than the fear Fox News was pandering at Rita/Katrina and the bird flu. It's a great book, one that should have been written, though it could have used a better editor. The book does jump around and there is a lot that probably could have been cut, but it is a great book dealing with a complex subject.
Frightening and informative.......2007-08-13
A facinating window into a horrifying period that we've almost intentionally downplayed in our histories. It's especially worthwhile given the recent concerns about an inevitable pandemic. We are better equipped in some ways to deal with a worldwide pandemic, but in many others we are even more fragile. Viruses, like trade, move much more quickly now.
Excellent Book.......2007-08-01
I learned a vast amount about disease, the medical system, and medecine in general. One of the best and most informative books I have ever read. Well-researched and easy to read.

In Inflammation Nation, internationally renowned scientist Dr. Floyd H. Chilton exposes the root cause of a host of seemingly disparate diseases, such as arthritis, heart disease, obesity, eczema, lupus, Alzheimer's, and emphysema: unbridled inflammation. The average American diet (even when we're making what we think are healthy choices) is inflaming our immune systems. But with Dr. Chilton's revolutionary, all-natural dietary program, you can learn how to choose foods that will help prevent, treat, and reverse the effects of this secret epidemic in as few as seven days.

He's right about inflammation, you know........2007-10-06
I just finished this book. It was a light and interesting read. I gave it five stars because I believe that despite how the material was delivered -- it is an extremely important subject that is, overall, quite esoteric. Thus, for his field one can't criticize too harshly.
The book itself I felt like it could, as other reviewers have said, had a little more emphasis on an actual plan. Instead of giving a plan he demonstrated it with *ideas* for meals. I really wanted some more specific nutritional content instead of an overall "index." But hey, maybe I'm just a little bit of a science geek at heart. (Give me real numbers, not made up units!) Though, clearly, this book was intended for the common man -- for the nation -- not for a scientist at heart.
One thing that surprised me is how little supplementation of omega 3 EPA he recommended. Perhaps this was because he expected us to be getting it from the better meals we would be eating? Some studies on depression/bipolar, among other things recommend supplementing as much as 2 GRAMS of EPA per day, many of which have impressive outcomes! (Can this amount be achieved simply by eating "right?" Perhaps this high ammount is therapeautic)
But the important things that were introduced to me in this book that despite all of my reading of scientific studies, and prowling around on the net for information on inflammatory disease, I had never run across comes from the insightful review of the effects of arachidonic acid -- an insidious omega 6 fatty acid in our diet responsible for much of our immune problems as a nation, and the effects of an important supplement I'd entirely neglected to ever look into: borage oil.
Over all, this book had great information in it that even an otherwise well-informed guy like me could use! For all of it's shortcomings it offers something that's great, and I think, could stop a LOT of misery in this world! If I have any criticism, it is that it felt geared a little too much towards the average joe! But this isn't a bad thing... it just serves a bigger purpose and that is helping the common man, instead of being simply of academic appeal.
Highly recommended.
extreme deficiency.......2007-03-27
What the authors say about inflammation and arachidonic acid is true and significant, but the lask of mention of other causes of inflammation is hard to forgive. Not a word is said about toxins, homocysteine, infections, oxidants, or inflammatory vegetable oils. among many causes of inflammation. YOu might try THE INFLAMMATION SYNDROME, or HONEST NUTRITION.
interesting reading, not perfect.......2007-03-10
Very interesting take on diet and metabolism that I have not seen anywhere else. I recommend the book for that reason. Even so, it has a couple of shortcomings. Firstly, Chilton is a researcher and he mentions conducting six research studies on AA. But he gives no details (although one paper is attached as an appendix) - no high-level overview of how the pieces came together, how the studies proceeded, how many participants, nature of the results in each study. Secondly as other people have noted, his plan of action is rather vague. He is absolutely clear about two foods to avoid - farmed salmon and eggs. He then gives a table of every food that has been measured by the USDA for its AA content and lists them in order, but it's less useful than you might think, with weird listings like chitterlings and pork skins. And the main text is also vague - at one point (p.95) he mentions beef and lamb as being low in AA. But his food pyramid shows beef and pork, no lamb. No mention of whether industrially farmed meat/eggs are worse than naturally raised. Worth it for the info about AA though, speculative as it is at the moment.
Need to be a NY Nutrionist.......2006-10-09
I bought this book in an effort to help myself w/fibromyalgia pain. I actually bought "WInning the War" which is the newest book, which Prevention Mag. sent a free copy to review before buying. After coming on line here, one reveiw indicated it was nearly the same as Inflammation Nation. I went to local bookstore, found inflammation Nation there for far less than the $40 Prevention/Rodale books wanted for his Winning the War book. These are just about as identical as 2 books can get. I find the book contains much information and is well written. However, like many who wrote, it's almost not a book to be readl but rather studied. I find I have had to take notes of this and that, and these AA's and so much more that the general public most likely wouldn't understand. I was disappointed that there is not a list of substitute type foods, esp. in my case, where I don't eat fish at all. Overall, a good book for reference on which foods carry more inflammation, but I think I need to focus on seeing a nutrionist more, who can work with me one on one per se, and make any adjustments I may need. I just found it very involved, and somewhat complicated for one who's not dieted per se before for inflammation sake.
disappointed.......2006-09-01
I was very disappointed when I opened this book. I thought I was reading his other book, WINNING THE WAR WITHIN, with a new cover. Essentially I was. There is not enough new information in this book to justify buying both. It should have been published as a newer version of the old book, not a totally new book. Sorry, it is well written, an awful lot of good and well presented information, but feel like I was charged twice for the same book. If you don't own the War Within, then by all means, buy this book. If you do, then I'd pass. Thank you.
Book Description
We are a diabetic nation: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three Americans born in this century will become diabetic. James Hirsch's myth-shattering blend of history, reportage, advocacy, and memoir will speak for, and to, the 20 million Americans who live with this disease. Cheating Destiny offers revealing views of the diabetic subculture, the urge toward secrecy that many diabetics feel, the glycemic rollercoaster they ride constantly, and the remarkable perseverance-even heroism-required for survival. Hirsch is uniquely qualified to write this book. An award-winning journalist and best-selling author, he has lived with type 1 diabetes for twenty-five years. His brother Irl, also a diabetic, is one of the country's leading diabetologists. Most poignantly, he knows firsthand the toll diabetes can take on parents: his three-year-old son was diagnosed with the disease while Hirsch was writing this book. Hirsch draws on all this expertise to craft an incisive, surprising portrayal of the fascinating science behind the disease and the skyrocketing impact of diabetes on our economy and society. Most striking is his candid, authoritative writing about the psychological and emotional hurdles that diabetics confront every day. Anyone who lives with diabetes-or loves a diabetic-will find here an empowering voice of empathy.

50+ Years with Type I...Hirsch is right.......2007-05-20
I've had Type I diabetes since age 3 and I'm now 54.
The fact that I'm still alive is a testament to the improvements in treatment of the specific type of diabetes I have. Having said that, the incredibly bad training and lack of understanding of most medical professionals is downright frightening. With my years of experience, I know when a medical professional is clueless and can find one who does have knowledge and experience. What scares me are those parents and patients who don't understand and end up being treated by the uninformed or misinformed. Mr. Hirsch gets it right on that count and that is what I consider the key point of an effective treatment plan...start with the very best professionals you can find. Do NOT settle for wannabes with degrees that mean less than nothing! Find physicians who have the disease themselves and are active in research and have well trained, experienced staffs. If your physician gets excited and starts praising you for your 5.0 A1c...and does NOT warn you about the neurological damage to the brain from excessive lows, it's time to find a new endocrinologist.
My last two endos are both type I's who teach at major medical schools. My primary care physicians communicate with the endos and coordinate my treatment...effectively.
Be proactive and research your medical caregivers.
Kudos to Mr. Hirsch for a book that states the truths of diabetes care in our time!
Cheating Destiny.......2007-05-12
As a mother of a Type 1 Diabetic, I was pleased to find a very readable and even encouraging personal story to be your own advocate and responsible for your own destiny.
Disappointing and misleading on several levels .......2007-04-12
I read this book on the basis of its reviews, but I don't understand why it's been so well received. It is eccentric, episodic, and disjointed, as if the author took a number of shorter articles and threw them together willy-nilly. As such, it is neither coherent nor particularly informative. It is certainly not a book for anyone trying to obtain objective, helpful information about management of these two diseases.
I use the term "two diseases" advisedly. I am a Type 2 diabetic (non-insulin dependent) from a family with a multi-generational history of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. My father (Type 2) and his half-brother (Type 1) both died of diabetic complications. Although Hirsch provides a sop to Type 2 diabetics (90% of all diabetics), it is clear that his primary focus is Type 1. Why not just say so? I am not belittling that focus. But Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are different in terms of cause, mechanism of failure at the cellular level, and treatment options.
Hirsch (in common with many "crusaders" for specific diseases) is also outrageously careless with regard to his usage of the word "cure". The fact is that the more researchers discover about the intricacies of the human body, the farther away they find themselves from a "cure" for many, many diseases, from the merely inconvenient to the life-threatening. Modern research and medicine struggle with a myriad of complex, chronic disease processes - it isn't all about money and politics. Therefore, although "cures" are devoutly to be wished for, "mere" successful management of a disease by a patient and his or her doctor should be applauded, not condemned.
In this regard, I take serious issue with his opinions concerning "tight control" methodologies. His comments on Bernstein's diet are specious (and I don't think he was playing devil's advocate). I don't follow the diet myself, but I do successfully practice a 40-20-40-20-40-20 regime. Further, the reversal of symptoms in early Type 2 diabetics is not a "cure" - it is merely a reversal of symptoms. The person remains a diabetic. This is something of which my "ignorant, income motivated" doctor reminds me every time I see him (and believe me, he has amassed far more than "2 hours" of diabetes education over his years of practice!).
I wish I had something more positive to say about this book - the author can be an excellent writer when he chooses to be. But this type of over-the-top selective information does more harm than good.
Type 1 Diabetic.......2007-03-26
I LOVED this book! I have had type 1 diabetes for 24 years and I am very well managed and complication free. This book was interesting and informative in so many ways... the history of diabetes treatment; the hurdles and challenges of treatment & research given today's healthcare system, pharmaceutical industry, rewards systems and cultural landscape; and a first person perspective of a knowledgeable long time diabetic. You may not agree with everything Hirsch has to say, but this is a GREAT read nonetheless.
A must-read for health care providers & those affected by diabetes.......2007-03-21
wow. phenomenal book. The text contains both history surrounding this disease and disuccion about the shortcomings of today's medical care thereof. Hirsch succinctly highligts the critical components of the challenges of the disease & its care. I recommend this to all patients, colleagues, & friends.

This book is middle of the road at best!.......2007-09-06
While this is not a totally bad book on the whole, it's not a really good book either. The authors did some useful work in documenting and exsposing the plot to unleash a Biological Apocalypse, and made it seem like a real possibility. IMO the title is misleading. I was expecting far more informnation about the Healing Codes and how specifically to apply them. For a book titled as such, with 537 pages there was very little information concerning the Healing Codes. A better title would have been: The Biological Apocalypse Exposed. In that case I would have given it 4 stars instead of three.
You can't be serious..........2007-05-04
After hearing from a friend of my mother's who is a healer that this was the best healing book she has ever read, and seeing so many positive reviews here, I was excited about what I would learn from this book, especially being a musician who is now studying natural therapies and am particularly interested in using music to heal.
After I got to the end, I thought "What the?". Did I miss something?
Don't get me wrong - I completed a couple of science degrees before deciding to return to studies in natural medicine, so I consider myself to be quite intelligent. But I found by the end of the book that I had no idea how to apply these so called "healing frequencies", as although they listed frequencies that are supposedly the 6 healing sounds, there was no mention as to what you are actually meant to do with them, let alone how you can actually generate them (as they don't correspond with any of the frequencies generated by musical instruments).
I also find it a little disturbing that the only healing method discussed - herbal medicine - stated that if you could select a herb to use to treat a complaint via pythagorian skein numbers, then "virtually anyone who practices herbal healing using this technique can become a master herbalist". This is done by assigning a number to each letter (A=1, B=2 etc), then adding them up until you are left with a single digit number (eg acne = 1 + 3 + 14 + 5 = 23 = 5) and then choosing a herb that also adds up to that number as the treatment..! Err... it takes several years of training to become even a basic herbalist as there is a little more to herbal medicine than that, such as some herbs / potencies being poisonous! I've been aware of the pythagorean skeins since I was a little child, as there are all sorts of fun things you can do by assigning numbers to letters and adding them up. In primary school, it was common to determine your "compatability" with a member of the opposite sex via that method. It was fun, but unlikely to give a truly reliable result! Would you trust someone to treat your illness by simply applying that method to their healing modality of choice?
Nor did I manage to follow how they managed to "crack the code" of the bible (well, it was by divine revelation - you have to take what they say on faith). I don't doubt that the bible has been heavily tampered with, but the amount of things the authors have "read into" most of the bible seem a bit far fetched. Perhaps I'm just not one of the 144,000 Horowitz so arrogantly states that this book is "clearly for".
After they revealed these "codes" midway through the book, the remainder of the book was the most outlandish bunch of conspiracy theories I've ever read. I consider myself to be quite open minded despite my scientific training, especially having grown up with "new age" parents who have had friends and acquaintances with some quite eccentric beliefs, but this was too much. The conspiracy theories were interesting to consider, but the scope seems quite over the top, especially if it is true that the only way the human race can be saved from inevitable death by biological warfare is if 144,000 people learn to sing these 6 healing frequencies. Hmmm.
Don't waste your money. I intend to try to sell my copy on ebay to try to recoup some of the money I wasted on it - reading it once was more than enough!
wake up call.......2006-11-13
This is one of the most interesting books i have ever read. The contents of which are very important for people all over the world to understand. There can be no question that the powers that be are manipulating the worlds populations by dumbing us down and withholding very important information which we are not only entitled to have but have an obligation to understand.
Leonard Horowitz and Joseph Puleo are truly gods messengers!
This book will give you some very sound vibrations.
Awesome & Shocking.......2006-03-25
When I first started reading Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse I was somewhat suspecious or careful of what I was reading. But, after my continue read of this book, it became apparent that what is happening in my country behind the scenes was shocking. Everyone should read this book. It is an absolute crime that the main stream press is not alerting Americans of the health threats that are all around us. I could write forever about this book. My recommendation is to just read this book so that you are informed. Too many citizens in the US are so uninformed or misinformed that our future and our future generations are at threat by a national and global movement for profit at any expense, not only the health of our children but the poisons we are bombarded with everyday of our lives. Read this book and tell others.
Solfeggio Salvation!.......2004-07-11
In the vast cornucopia of conspiracy books now available, I have not found information as sincerely intriguing and useful as that within the pages of Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse. Wary at first , expecting to be inevitably corralled by the gloom and doom dogma found in most works of this kind, I managed to abandon defenses as I encountered descriptions of Pythagorean Skeins lost for 2500 years which mysteriously appeared on the pseudonymous Dr. Joseph Barber's car windshield during an evening drive. Compelled by Jeshua or who we now know as Jesus, the Doctor was then led to inquire into recognizable numerical patterns found in the Bible's 'Book of Numbers' and the potential healing vibrations/matrices hidden within the verses based on variations of the numbers 3-6-9, numbers Pythagoras himself held in high spiritual regard. Equally compelling descriptions of the Solfeggio scale deliberately suppressed by the Catholic church in medieval times followed, complete with the many leveled meanings of the Latin notes as described in Webster's dictionary. The Solfeggio scale, the authors claim, contain vibrational patterns that can be used for healing and it is this that the church and other related institutions want to keep from us. The authors include the definitions of the tones found in Webster's dictionary, of the Latin Solfeggio (Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La) including the 'hidden entries' and cross references within, of esoterically beneficial qualities of the notes as well as their political, spiritual and scientific dimensions. There are many allusions to frequencies, magnetic fields, resonance and systems in the full Latin names of the Solfeggio notes. When these encrypted entries are scrutizined with an open mind , it becomes evident why the authorities took it upon themselves to squelch the Solfeggio. The vibrations generated by singing or playing the scale, when properly applied, are of a powerfully healing and liberatory nature. I tried this myself by tuning the six strings of a guitar to the original Solfeggio and singing the notes. I could feel various areas of my body warm up like the thymus, thyroids and neo-cortex.
The most alluring facet of the Healing Codes... lay in the exposé of Webster's 'logic' in terms of the way he structured and ordered the definitions of the word cryptic and words related to it. The authors make apparent a series of conspiratorial etymologies pointing to the Illuminati, the secret society many regard as behind the occult shenanigans now occurring on this planet. Ol' Noah with alleged ties to the Freemasons, somehow managed to hide from the unwashed masses, via his innocuously 'rational' ordering and classification of words and 'hidden' cross references, evidence that such a sinisterly manipulative society actually exists. There are even foreshadowings of bio-warfare of apocalyptic proportions in crypt. Could the cryptosporidium making the news be a part of this ominous lexicon?
It became increasingly difficult to scoff at Healing Codes... and its seeming radical leaps from Solfeggio to the Book of Numbers, the numerology of herbs, King James delilberate perversion of the bible then on to Mad Cow Disease, AIDS and Ebola and their basis in 'prion' proteins. The convincing tack Dr. Leonard G. Horowitz along with Dr. Barber chose to navigate the writing of this book with is evident in the balance they strike between biblical prophecy and a sobering, yet nearly conclusive proof of a lurking Biowarfare industry hidden within the Pharmaceutical, Military and intelligence agencies currently at large. They describe with a combination of spiritual eloquence and empirical soundness, the vibrational and electromagenetical basis of diseases that are currently on humanity's pathological horizon. Dr. Horowitz reveals that prion proteins that can transmit disease by bypassing our natural immunological systems which fail to recognize them are within such seeming mysteries as Gulf War Syndrome. The prions are probably crystalline in structure he goes on to observe. Viruses and bacterium once used to infect us are now outdated and ineffective. Proteins that have adopted 'abnormal forms' have become disease couriers instead. They are much harder to detect since they don't require DNA and RNA as a part of their composition. They can 'evade host immune survelliance'. Prions, according to the authors, are receivers and transmitters of electromagnetic energies. So be on the lookout for crypto-crystalline epidemics manipulated by HAARP and EISCAT, military projects heavily funded by the New World Orderers which use electromagnetism to manipulate everything from weather systems to the common cold.
Even more intriguing is the use of these protein based diseases as a means to achieve corporate and political sabotage. The authors cite the notorious Tyson food giant who bought out the Hudson Meat company after scares of contaminated product caused their stocks to plummet. Could Tyson have deliberately infected the meat of this unsuspecting company? Could such tactics be a foreshadowing of powerful Nations buying out the third world via plague to create a New World Order?
While much of the information in this 500 plus page work, of an imminent biological apocalypse sponsored by the New World Order crew is compelling, the topics covered are barely scratched as relevant as they are. How can we counter such manipulations that appear to be coming from sources so much bigger than ourselves? How can we use the Solfeggio scale, awareness of the Bibles hidden numerical harmonies and other creative responses to the death and disease mongers licking their Pharmaceutical chops in anticipation of malignant windfalls to come, all at humanities expense? Can we bring down the walls of the Bayer corporation (who had/have ties to Nazi Germany) like the trumpeters did the wall of Jericho? I sense that we can but I'd like to know more on how exactly.

Decent........2007-07-19
I like this cookbook. It is not quite as restrictive as some other candida diets, so that should be kept in mind for those searching for a way to conquer candida. Also, it is a cookbook, not a health book, so it does not go into great depth about candida, though it does offer some useful information. I would not make this my primary reference book on candida. I like the book for its simple, healthy whole foods recipes, though.
Not So Accurate.......2007-01-05
This book really didn't help me much. The foods that are on the "allow" list are in actuality NOT allowed and can really set a candida patient back on their quest for health. I would not recommend to someone that is truly fighting this disease.
Candidiasis ad infinitum.......2006-08-12
Of the large numbers of books on this subject, this one offered little new information. I did see a few recipes that appealed, but could have easily skipped this one.

This book has helped answer many of my questions regarding Candida and has explained what I can expect as I go through the healing process. It is very informative in relation to diet and has good recipes to make the plain food we have to eat a little more exciting.
Easy Candida Recipes.......2001-03-07
I thought this book was very helpful. What I liked most was the "rainbow meal plan" which listed the vegetables and meat combinations you could have on this diet at every meal. Because there are so many vegetables/meat combinations to choose from you shouldn't get bored. The plan also recommends steaming for all your food so it's easy to prepare - all you need is water, a pot and a steamer. The downside is you do have to chop a lot of veggies - however, it's worth it! I also had a hard time with another recipe which called for "Homemade Potassium Baking Powder" pg.83. In the recipe the book says to use potassium bicarbonate which can be ordered from a pharmacy. However, when I went to pick up my bicarbonate it had a skull and cross bone on the bottle and was rated somewhat toxic. When I talked to the pharmacist he said I needed to know what percentage of the potassium bicarbonate was called for because potassium bicarbonate is a strong base. Anyway I had no way to get that information so I skipped that recipe. So obviously the book should be more detailed about things like that. Yet even with this snaffoo I thought the book was helpful and still use most recipes.
